Sword-Wielding Dog Killer Gets 1 Year in Jail

Browse News

CHESAPEAKE, Va. -- A man who slashed his dog to death with a sword was sentenced to one year in prison yesterday.

Robert Allen Young Jr. pleaded guilty to killing his 50-pound male Pit Bull in his Chesapeake, Va., home on Sept. 7. At his Tuesday sentencing, Young, the 46-year-old husband and father of two, offered no defense of the abuse.

Authorities were alerted to the crime when neighbors reported seeing Young "instigating his dog with some type of sword" outside his home at Chesapeake Mobile Home Park, as Pet Pulse previously reported.

Neighbors then watched as Young took the dog into the home and re-emerged 15 minutes later with the Pit's slashed body, which he deposited into a trash bin.

Young was arrested that evening and charged with animal cruelty, as well as failure to vaccinate his dog for rabies and register it with the city of Chesapeake.

He was reported to have been very intoxicated at the time of the crime, which Young attributed to self defense. Deputy Public Defender A. Robinson Winn said his client was "highly intoxicated" at the time of the incident.

While the dog had no documented history of aggression, Winn said that the Pit Bull had lunged at Young before, as well as at other animals.

"He said the dog had been aggressive in the past and on this date in question and he killed the dog," Winn said.

Young received a five-year sentence with four years suspended, contingent on indeterminate supervised probation. In Virginia, animal cruelty is considered a felony, generally warranting no more than a one year prison sentence.

The unusual weapon of choice in this gruesome animal cruelty case was reminiscent of a case in mid-July, when a Pennsylvania man killed his wife's American bulldog mix with a 30-inch Samurai-style sword, as Pet Pulse previously reported.

In that case, the police of Ridlely Township confiscated 20 daggers and 10 swords from the accused's home.

Killed his own dog with a sword, what a sick man. One year in jail is not enough.

I guess privacy is a reason no mention of this man's life...treatment of family, ie, children...wife? It is is well-known now, that they go together. The norm. Animal abuse and child abuse. Domestic violence.

There is a difference in aggression and defense. If someone comes at you with a sword or stick, it is natural to defend. It's a poor excuse anyway. I am sickened by the treatment and reports of abuse this last year concerning this magnificent breed (who gets a bad rap, BTW). In most cities, they will not even allow a chance at rehabilitation for these poor animals. They are just automatically euthanized. I could cry. If someone can do this to an animal, they have the capacity to do it to a human. One year is not enough for this...person...to be rehabilitated.

Only a year, how pathetic. He should spend the rest of his life in jail and he should spend time after that in a very hot place.

He deserves longer then a year. they need to put something out on him so he can get no more animals. thats so wrong. pit bulls are not all aggressive and a killing machine. its all on how you raise them.

Need more news coverage of prison terms for animal cruelty. This one was horrendous. I can just imagine what this poor dog went through on a daily basis with this devil of an owner.

I'm glad to see that he received some kind of jail time, but one year seems pretty darn light for the brutal slaying of a living creature.

There are much more humane ways to help an aggressive dog. The last resort should be euthenasia not torture.

Alcohol is not an excuse for cruelty. I don't know if the man has children, but I would also fear for their safety.

Alcohol or no alcohol there is no excuse! What if he had done this to a child. He needs longer to sit in jail and think about it and lots of rehab if his alcohol problem is that bad. Also, banned from owning another pet!!!!!

1 year seems like a slap on wrist. He was drunk and killed the dog, what if a kid had been involved and he got mad at the child? Then to hack it up with a sword that is not self defense, that is drunken stupidness.

Much as I like to see this guy put away on a longer sentence, I'm glad he has to do one year hard time with four suspended. This is pretty severe for an animal abuse conviction in our country. I think the worm is turning in the animals' favor.

This person should be locked up for a much longer time. Being intoxicated is no excuse. He has a family that he might also abuse and maybe the dog attacked him because the dog was protecting someone else in the family. He really should be put away for longer.

One year that will never be enough time. It should be an eye for and eye or rather it should be a life for a life when it comes to innocent animals.

I would hope that part of the sentence is that he can not own or live with another animal for the rest of his life and that he can not bare any weapons of any kind for the rest of his life.

I think he got off too easy. And if the dog did attack him, sounds like he started the whole thing by instigating it.

I have read this several times now. The cruelty of these actions is just something I have a hard time understanding. There needs to be stronger more reaching laws to punish or deter these sicko's.

I think the man should have had to serve all 5yrs. in prison. It sounds like to me that the pit bull would not have beed aggressive at all if he hadn't made it mean.

I say he should of sentenced with murder! killing an animal like that for no reason at all! I say he's heart-less, he should of got more time, it's like abuseing a helpless child or even killing, I see animal abuse so many times it makes me so fustraited n what can you do about it? nothing! u can't just walk up 2 a stranger n ask whats your name? oh yeah I'm ginna turn you in! no you can't! n alot of cops ignor it! I say laws need 2 be more harsh on animal abusers! killers need more punishment! they're helpless n all they want is a warm place, food, and love! they don't care who you are as long as your nice! grr I hear about this stuff n it makes me so mad! I hope this kinda stuff opens people's eyes 1 day n things start 2 change 4 the small helpless creatures!

One year in jail? Ya right. When will he get out on parole...for "good behavior?" Sociopaths like this do manipulate. Then what. Back home to kick the kids? This man is serious bad news.
