Sword-Wielding Dog Killer Gets 1 Year in Jail

Browse News

CHESAPEAKE, Va. -- A man who slashed his dog to death with a sword was sentenced to one year in prison yesterday.

Robert Allen Young Jr. pleaded guilty to killing his 50-pound male Pit Bull in his Chesapeake, Va., home on Sept. 7. At his Tuesday sentencing, Young, the 46-year-old husband and father of two, offered no defense of the abuse.

Authorities were alerted to the crime when neighbors reported seeing Young "instigating his dog with some type of sword" outside his home at Chesapeake Mobile Home Park, as Pet Pulse previously reported.

Neighbors then watched as Young took the dog into the home and re-emerged 15 minutes later with the Pit's slashed body, which he deposited into a trash bin.

Young was arrested that evening and charged with animal cruelty, as well as failure to vaccinate his dog for rabies and register it with the city of Chesapeake.

He was reported to have been very intoxicated at the time of the crime, which Young attributed to self defense. Deputy Public Defender A. Robinson Winn said his client was "highly intoxicated" at the time of the incident.

While the dog had no documented history of aggression, Winn said that the Pit Bull had lunged at Young before, as well as at other animals.

"He said the dog had been aggressive in the past and on this date in question and he killed the dog," Winn said.

Young received a five-year sentence with four years suspended, contingent on indeterminate supervised probation. In Virginia, animal cruelty is considered a felony, generally warranting no more than a one year prison sentence.

The unusual weapon of choice in this gruesome animal cruelty case was reminiscent of a case in mid-July, when a Pennsylvania man killed his wife's American bulldog mix with a 30-inch Samurai-style sword, as Pet Pulse previously reported.

In that case, the police of Ridlely Township confiscated 20 daggers and 10 swords from the accused's home.

1 year isn't enough but it wasn't that long ago that no one would have cared and if they did the judicial system wouldn't have given him any time.

It amazes me that people who commit such terrible crimes get off with such a light punishment!

It does not amaze me. People do not thing that animals have rights and the court just foster those beliefs with the insignificant sentences. Thank goodness for Mr. Bob Barker who is spending his money on making sure that animals have advocates who will protect them.

If it was that easy to kill his pet when he was drinking, I would be fearful if I was part of his human family.

One year is definitely not a long enough punishment for this sadistic man. He should never be allowed to own another animal.

Ridiculous. 1 year is not enough for a man who is evil enough to kill his own dog.

I think he should have got Many more years, but if they couldn't give him a longer prison sentence they should have added that he spend atleast 5yrs volunteering in animal shelters after he got out.

I think it would help if he had the right supervision. or has to work maybe in a crematorium witnessing what happens to abused animals.

we need some stricter animal abuse laws. There should be jail time and fines for abusing any animal. Too many people take their frustrations out on their animals with no consequences to the human.

um, no. obviously a dumb excuse to kill your own dog - if if the dog even was agressive, he should have let a professional handle the problem!

How horrible! I am confused about the whole being intoxicated and killing the dog in self-defense. If the dog was outside and he was inside there shouldn't have been a problem. And if he was that scared of the dog, why didn't he take the dog to a shelter or try to get help with it. It sounds pretty fishy to me.

I hope that probation includes checking in on his family to make sure his children are ok.

This is such bull! This guy was trying to get his dog angry and what does "he lunged" mean lunging can be in play! It sounds like a load of crap! All I can say for this guy is KARMA! He deserved more time in jail! Why if his dog attacked him would he not call the police or animal control? I don't believe this guy at all!

Like so many studies have shown, he is capable of killing a human. He also shows the psychological tendencies for extremely violent murders because a knife or in this case sword is in his hand making it a killing with contact, not something from a distance like a gun. This is frightening as well as sickening that one year is considered justice for a killing like this.

A year in jail isn't enough for this joker, but at least it wasn't a slap on the hand that many pet abusers get. It makes me sick to see things like this happening. Why didn't he contact a breed rescue and give the dog up? Just because he and the dog didn't get along is no reason to kill him like that. That's what breed rescue is for. There was a very good chance that the dog could have been placed with another family and been fine.

Eye for an eye. This man should be given much, much more than one measly year in jail. Any person who is capable of brutally murdering an animal is a danger to society and animals everywhere. This is why the fifty states need to start reconsidering and rewriting animal cruelty laws...

I feel positively nauseous.

The dog lunged at the guy at some point in the past? Wanna bet the dog was on a chain? Chesapeake is a relatively rural area and this lifeform (he's not human) certainly don't sound the type to have a fenced yard for his dog... read about the problems associated with chaining dogs on the Dogs Deserve Better site.

Ugh. And he tried to use an intoxication defense. In VA, intoxication can take a 1st degree murder charge and make it into 2nd degree murder (when the victim is human) but it doesn't make you innocent.

I wish the judge had tacked on some community service and probation and therapy to this guys sentence. He clearly has no empathy for anything living.. I have to wonder how safe his kids are and of course, any 'pets/victims' he will get in the future. There isn't anything in this that prevents him from getting a new puppy on his way home from the Pen as far as I can tell.

I am sorry if i offend anyone from VA, but there seems to be an intense lack of respect for animals down there. This fellow in particular should have received much more than a year. Not only for what he did to the dog, but that is a serious sign of a nutjob and a danger to society. Murder is murder. Every living creature considers its own life to be the most important life in the universe, as taken from Buddism. Its no different than taking the life of a human. Furthermore, the dog pictured in my profile picture was rescued from an overcrowded shelter in Rockbridge, VA. He was slated to be put down within the day that the NY shelter rescued him. He is a wonderful dog. Why was he there? He became deaf from being trained too young and too close to guns and therefore became of no use to the VA owner. Dogs seem to have no value other than utility in some parts of the country, and it is a shame.

1 year. That's what the system believes the life of a dog is worth? The more people I meet the more I admire my dogs. If it were up to me I would drop the 1 year in jail and just give him 1 whack with that sword. Let every man get what he deserves.
