The dog lunged at the guy at some point in the past? Wanna bet the dog was on a chain? Chesapeake is a relatively rural area and this lifeform (he's not human) certainly don't sound the type to have a fenced yard for his dog... read about the problems associated with chaining dogs on the Dogs Deserve Better site.
Ugh. And he tried to use an intoxication defense. In VA, intoxication can take a 1st degree murder charge and make it into 2nd degree murder (when the victim is human) but it doesn't make you innocent.
I wish the judge had tacked on some community service and probation and therapy to this guys sentence. He clearly has no empathy for anything living.. I have to wonder how safe his kids are and of course, any 'pets/victims' he will get in the future. There isn't anything in this that prevents him from getting a new puppy on his way home from the Pen as far as I can tell.
