Sword-Wielding Dog Killer Gets 1 Year in Jail

Browse News

CHESAPEAKE, Va. -- A man who slashed his dog to death with a sword was sentenced to one year in prison yesterday.

Robert Allen Young Jr. pleaded guilty to killing his 50-pound male Pit Bull in his Chesapeake, Va., home on Sept. 7. At his Tuesday sentencing, Young, the 46-year-old husband and father of two, offered no defense of the abuse.

Authorities were alerted to the crime when neighbors reported seeing Young "instigating his dog with some type of sword" outside his home at Chesapeake Mobile Home Park, as Pet Pulse previously reported.

Neighbors then watched as Young took the dog into the home and re-emerged 15 minutes later with the Pit's slashed body, which he deposited into a trash bin.

Young was arrested that evening and charged with animal cruelty, as well as failure to vaccinate his dog for rabies and register it with the city of Chesapeake.

He was reported to have been very intoxicated at the time of the crime, which Young attributed to self defense. Deputy Public Defender A. Robinson Winn said his client was "highly intoxicated" at the time of the incident.

While the dog had no documented history of aggression, Winn said that the Pit Bull had lunged at Young before, as well as at other animals.

"He said the dog had been aggressive in the past and on this date in question and he killed the dog," Winn said.

Young received a five-year sentence with four years suspended, contingent on indeterminate supervised probation. In Virginia, animal cruelty is considered a felony, generally warranting no more than a one year prison sentence.

The unusual weapon of choice in this gruesome animal cruelty case was reminiscent of a case in mid-July, when a Pennsylvania man killed his wife's American bulldog mix with a 30-inch Samurai-style sword, as Pet Pulse previously reported.

In that case, the police of Ridlely Township confiscated 20 daggers and 10 swords from the accused's home.

Animals and Kids - they seem to get the shaft in our society. "Bad" kids get beaten and/or drugged up - so called "bad" dogs get killed. It makes me sad that there isn't more we can do to stop the violence in our society. And, it makes me made that those that harm kids and animals don't get more time or punishment... Maybe this man will have to suffer a sobering one year in jail - maybe someone there will show him what it's like to be... Sadly, this guy will get out of jail and not have learned anything - he will probably hurt someone or something again...Very sad!

There are several key words used in this article. "Husband and father of two" was the first thing that caught my attention. Then "he was intoxicated". Anyone that works cruelty cases knows that animal abuse and domestic violence go hand in hand. Makes you wonder what else goes on in that house towards the rest of the family. And being he was intoxicated, and it probably not being the first time, it's probably a disfunctional household. If the dog did show signs of aggression, could you really blame the dog? For all we know the dog may have just been defending itself. How sad this is.We need stiffer punishment, next time it may be the wife or kids!!!

What a lousy excuse. I bet the dog was super sweet. The fact that he never got vaccinated or registered with the city shows how responsible of an owner he is. He was clearly just trying to use alcohol and the bad reputation that pit bulls have as an excuse.

This is stupid, and them trying to blame it on the fact that he was drunk and that the dog was aggressive is RIDICULOUS!!! The guy should be treated the exact way his poor defenseless dog was!!!!!!

How sick. If he felt in danger he should have took the dog to a shelter or vet and had them put it down, not do it himself in a cruel and disgusting way.

Anyone observing aggressiveness in a dog (especially if considered an aggressive breed), should report such incidents before its too late. If the dog had killed its owner (who apparently was intoxicated and used excessive aggression against the dog), the dog's sentence would have been more than a year of imprisonment. The actual confinement time for this felony will probably much less than 12 months.

I am completely disguested by this jerk. If the dog was indeed aggressive perhaps the owner should have looked into what he was doing wrong, before taking it out on the dog.

He felt so big with his sword that he decided to slash an innocent dog? Bow before the kendo master! He won't feel like such a hotshot in jail, guarenteed.

How sick! he deserves more than one year. If the dog was aggressive and dangerous, have it humanely euthanized, don't butcher it. If he had done this to a human, it would be life imprisonment. Maybe next time he will take his anger out on a person. Why can't our judicial system see that violence is violence? Enough, I'm too upset to write.

A year gives his wife time to get divorced and move to anohter state where he would have very limited access to his children if she can not get his rights terminated. Many, many times, it's animals first....then children.

I wonder how someone lets themselves get that detached from right and wrong. He clearly has issues. I agree with the jail time, but don't think it will help him. I feel sorry for his family.

He needs to see the kind of devastation he has just been a participant in - how much suffering there is, how much sadness, how these animals have souls and some how, some time, he will pay with more than time behind bars.

If this guy would have taken his dog to a shelter, same result would have happened just not with a sword. If a dog shows aggession like this they would have put it down. It is not considered "animal cruelty" then?

Are you really comparing provoking a dog and then slashing it to death with a sword with humanely putting an animal to sleep??!!

I am thrilled that he will be doing one year, I just hope he does the whole year and doesn't get paroled. The guy sounds like a drunken sicko to purposely do this. I don't believe for one minute that he killed the dog in self defense.

1 year, what's that, a slap on the wrist? He shouldn't have gotten off so easily. Even if the dog was aggressive, there are other ways to deal with it; more humane ways. Some people shouldn't be allowed to own animals.

Certainly this isnt enough time for the crime committed. But supervised probation isnt no piece of cake either, at least he will be monitered closely for the last 4 years of his sentence. If he messes up just once, he will have to go back to prison for the remainder of his sentence and be charged all over again, and this time the punishment will be harsher for a second offense.

I don't think that one year of jail time is enough for the severity of his crime. People like him shouldn't be allowed to own animals. I wonder if part of his sentence included no consumption of alcohol, as he clearly loses his mind when he's intoxicated.

I do not understand why he should get four years of his sentence suspended. Why on earth bother to give him a five year sentence when four are going to be suspended? If he had to serve the entire five years, he might actually think about butchering an animal (intoxicated or not) next time. grrrrrrr.........

Hopefully the sentence associated with Animal Cruelty laws will result in more jail time, and/or higher fines as time continues.
I'd like to see the sentence expand to longer jail time, especially for a crime as severe as this.
