Woman And Guide Dog Refused Ride

CANADA – Not only was Diane Bergeron’s flight delayed last Sunday but so was her ride home – because a line of taxis refused to give her and her seeing eye dog a lift.

Bergeron, a coordinator with the Premier’s Council on the Status of Persons with Disabilities, is blind and is normally escorted by her guide dog, Max. When she tried to get a cab ride into Fort McMurray, she was refused service because of Max.

According to the Blind Persons’ Rights Act, no one can be denied access because of a guide dog. Fines for doing so range from $100 to around $1,000.

Ron MacNeill, owner of Sun Taxi said that some employees cite allergies or religious convictions as reasons for denying service to a customer. He said he can’t force a driver to provide service.

MacNeill said that Sun Taxi will accommodate guide dogs if notice is given in advance. That way, the driver is aware of the situation and should not refuse service.

In a similar case in London, a couple with a guide dog made prior arrangements with a taxi company and were still refused service when the taxi arrived. The driver gave no explanation as to why he would not allow the dog in the car. He repeatedly told the couple, “I’m not taking the dog.”

The driver later said that he had an allergy to dog hair. Drivers with allergies are required to have a medical exemption certificate displayed in the cab. A failure to do so or refusing service can carry a hefty fine, points to a license or the suspension of a license. Ali failed to provide this certificate.

Fortunately for Bergeron, an eyewitness to the incident gave her and Max a ride home. To add some irony to the story, she recently gave a speech on how to better accommodate people with disabilities.

I've heard of a lot of excuses for not doing your job but allergy or religion? maybe cab drivers with allergies or religious factors need to find new jobs.

They should definitely pay a fine for refusing to give this woman and her dog a ride home.

they should have just let her ride!

I hope they had to pay the fine. It didn't say if the driver had an exempt sign in the car. They should also have to provide her with free cab service for a year!

I dont think so! What is wrong with people thinking that guide dogs do not have rights to be where people are allowed. There should be so kind of punishment for this kind of treatment.

We've come a long way in this country, to accomodate people with disabilities, but when working with individuals there will always be some degree of difficulty because not everyone "gets it" yet.

We have read too many stories here of people with service dogs being denied the most mundane of things. It's a real disgrace. Fines should be much higher.

It sounds like more than religious convictions going on here. Maybe the highest fine will persuade them.

Discrimination at it's worst. There doesn't seem to be any logical explanation for this kind of behavior. Shame, shame, shame.

This is terrible. Shame on this driver. I can't imagine denying a person with a disability a ride. This doesn't make sense to me.

I wonder if he had a medical exemption cerifitcate in his cab? If it was for religious reasons then I say send them back to their own country.

Poor woman, not only was her flight delayed, then she had to have problems with the taxi. I'm glad a bystander helped her. I hope she reports this as a violation of the law.

I think this is just terrible. I can't imagine what religious convictions would keep a driver from letting a service dog ride in his cab.

This is a generalized statement I know but a lot of cab drivers these days are from other countries with different cultures and beliefs. If that was the drivers excuse, however, it is not OK in my mind. He knew he would run across differnces when he took the job and should never be able to use that as an excuse unless he felt his life was in danger.

Too bad Sun Taxi was not able to hear Diane's speech maybe they would have learned something. If every driver in the line of taxis had allergies then Sun Taxi needs to hire drivers that can do the job. I hope they get fined for not honoring the Blind Persons' Rights Act. I am thankful there are still people in the world who do the right thing and the eyewitness gave them a ride home.

THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE THAT SOMEONE WOULDN'T GIVE HER A RIDE. IF THERE WAS ANYONE THAT NEEDED A RIDE AND NEEDED THOUGHTFULNESS AND CONSIDERATION DURING TRAVEL IT WOULD BE THIS WOMAN. HOW STUPID.

narrow minded people shourl not hold a public job. or be up to date on there law's. something like that happend at my old job where a woman came in the restaurant with her SERVICE dog and even had on the jacket for the dog with the papers displayed. the manager jumpt up and told her the dog could not be in the restaurant hand hand a "cow" to the point were he wanted to call the cop's. i pointed out the law's about this and he did not want to hear it. so when the cops came they gave him a ticket... was to funny to see his face. and we made sure he got fired right after that.

This kind of discrimination is against the law. The drivers should be fined heavily and made to take an awareness course. I am so sad and angry when I read about discrimination of any kind.

i have read a couple stories like this and each one makes me madder than people are like this, that they wont let guide dogs in place or cars. it is still a disability and wrong to not give them their right to eat anywhere or ride anywhere. these people should be ashamed of themselves for not allowing the blind person and their dog their rights.

You would have to have a very severe allergy to be effected significantly by having a dog in the car for a few minutes.

Some people are just jerks. This often coincides, in my opinion with not being an animal lover. I have always been amazed that people will let someone rent a home or apartment with a child or children over someone with a pet. I have seen the damage that children can do! Some people are just silly about animals. It is too bad that causes problems for those who rely on animals as service animals. It would be great if everyone was more open minded . . .
