Wisc. 'Puppy Mill' Raid Rescues 84 Dogs

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wisc. – Following a tip, Wisconsin authorities raided a residence to find 84 dogs being kenneled in Dexter last Thursday.

While South Wood County Humane Society was left scurrying to find temporary homes for the mostly toy-breed dogs, this week the society is sorting through adoption applications.

It’s a hopeful turn around to what had been an overwhelming scenario, which started with an anonymous caller who reported there were dead animals, and a lack of wood and water at a puppy mill at 4:35 p.m. last Wednesday.

SWCHS responded the next day to find a residence kenneling 84 dogs, 75 of which were small toy breeds. All the dogs were kept two or three to a kennel in a room that was 20 feet by 20 feet, reported Phil Hartley, executive director of the shelter.

Dozens of the recovered dogs were injured or diseased, but only a few were suffering from life-threatening conditions, said Kim Krause, a veterinarian from the local Animal Medical and Surgical Clinic.

“They’re unkempt; they haven’t had the basic necessities of haircuts, bathing and nail trimming,” Krause said. “As far as we can tell, most are in fairly good body shape. The main thing we are seeing is dental disease and problems with eyes and ears.”

Since the rescue, as a result of a serious mange condition, one dog has been euthanized. But despite some of the dogs suffering from infections, injured limbs and other skin diseases, Hartley believes the remaining animals will pull through.

“We think we’re in clear sailing on that,” he said. But as for adoptions, Hartley contends that due to the trauma that some of the dogs have experienced, the first couple of weeks at their new homes could be difficult.

Over the weekend the shelter was flooded with visitors and donations of food, money and supplies.

In addition, adoption applications are coming in with multiple suitors for the 25 dogs SWCHS is housing. Now, the shelter has begun to sort through the possible forever homes with the hope some of the dogs will have new families by the end of the week.

“We’re going to be making calls the next couple of days to set up appointments and talk to them about the responsibility of owning these puppy mill dogs,” said Hartley.

The original rescued 84 dogs are comprised of Boston terrier, Chihuahua, Italian greyhound, Maltese, papillon, Dalmation, poodle and Norwegian elkhound dogs, as well as mixed breeds.

The rest of the dogs were sent to various shelters throughout the state.

Oprah started the momentum on this one - let's keep it going. We need to keep working to shut ALL the puppy mills down for good.

I agree with Cindy, we should put them in a cage, with little food and water, and treat them the exact same way they treated the dogs and see how they like it.. this is so unfair that these dogs had to go through this because of these ignorant people.

Wow, 84 animals! Why are some people cruel like that? I'm glad there was a tip-off about that place. Here's to remaining animals finding loving homes!

What a sad story. Although these pups were lucky that they were rescued and can now receive the medical treatment they need and hopefully find loving homes.

Two words: Spay and Neuter
Get rid of those puppy mills.

All breeders (puppy mills) should be checked on a regular basis just like the Department of Human Services checks on agencies regarding children, etc. There should be no puppy mills existing if this were done.

Puppy Mills could be put to rest. Why would anyone do that to any animal. I am glad they are safe.

We need to find a way to put an end to puppymills altogether. These poor little dogs. Thank God someone tipped them off about the conditions. I hope all the animals will find good homes.

Puppy mills are among the most disturbing ideas ever to take place anywhere. To think dogs live in those conditions so that someone else can profit makes me sick.

Maybe mandatory inspections for breeders would work. All breeders should have to be registered and facilities inspected periodically.

I think people should have to have some kinda paper stating the are allowed to breed dogs, only if they agree to give them the proper care they need. That way they can be checked out at any time to make sure they are doing the right thins for these poor animals!

Will there never be an end to these puppy mills? It seems as if there are so many of them and they never stop. I just hope and pray that in my lifetime that an end can be reached to this kind of abuse. Poor little dogs!!

What are earth are people thinking when they do stupid stuff like this?! Why do they start these things in the first place if they're not going to take care of the dogs? I don't get it.

Another nasty "Puppy Mill" what a shame. These dogs were in an unheallthy situation and were being abused. I don't think the law is tough enough on these people.

I'm glad to hear they have stoped another puppy mill. I rescued a pup from a mill and even after 3 years she still has some fear issues we are working on. But she's a great loving dog. Good luck to everyone who takes in one of these bundles of joy, with love, time and understanding you can have a great new best friend.

I'm glad that the dogs were rescued and are being rehabilitated to go into homes but why aren't we addressing the puppy mill issue more. Are there any regulations, licensure or inspection process that these places go through? I would like to see the prevention of situations like this.

I, too, wonder how many people were thinking of adopting before reading this article, just as I wondered about the hundreds of adoptions last week in Tucson, when about 800 dogs were rescued from a puppy mill.

Every time I see or hear the words puppy mill I cringe. This is a primary example of mans inhumanity to any living creature. We need to have strict laws which are vigorously enforced in order to get this problem under control.

I just wonder how many of these adoptions are going to be succesful.. People get wound up in wanting to help and do not realize what a commentment adopting a dog is.

It is good to hear that they weren't seriously abused; even though any abuse is bad.

How awful! The poor little babies. I would never do anything like that. I have 8 kitties that have their own 14X16 feet that is part of the house. It was built just for them. It has fans when it is hot and heating when it is cold. They get fed whatever kind of kitty food they need and want. I do this for them. I wouldn't have hords of animals to sell just for profit. I wouldn't think of starving them. After all they are my friends.

Puppy mills are by their nature places of cruelty and neglect. I have never read of any puppy mill that put the dogs welfare first....all they care about is making money at the expense of the poor, trapped dogs. They need to be put out of business ~ never buy any dog or cat at a pet store, that would help end puppy mills.

This type of puppy mill exists because there is a market for it. People need to only buy their dogs from reputable breeders who will show you the parents and the kennel! If there was no demand for these puppy mill dogs, the puppy mills would go out of business!

You support these mills when you buy from the pet shops in the mall. I won't even buy supplies from the stores. So instead, go to your shelter or if you must, buy from a responsible, legitimate breeder who will show you the parents of the puppy.

I wish people would realize how many " pure breed" animals come from situations like this. It is so sad that the animals have to live like this and that this is not uncommon.

I'm sorry but these puppy mill people cannot be dog lovers in any way. If anything that must hate them to put them through this sort of life and not care what happens to them. They are criminals.
