i'm sorry, but THAT poem won? i understand she's only 8 or 9, but she made an observational report that rhymes. the dumbing down of america is a major gripe w/me, and this is evidence enough that our school systems and parental guidance are failing us.
over the summer, our paper dedicates a page to children. it has kid-friendly articles and puzzles and sometimes even poetry and essay contests. participants are between the ages of 6 and 12, and nothing this vapid or unintelligent has ever won.

oh man...there should have been a high school version of this when i was in school. in 9th grade, for a class, i wrote this hilarious poem about Pepper, who, in her younger days, liked to run "figure 8's" around the living room and really was an unstoppable little holy terror when she did. it also played on what had become a running joke...after having seen this one very strange picture of Pepper, a number of people (including 1 of my teachers!) independently came to the conclusion that my dog was possessed. i should try to find that sometime and post it.

Great contest! Encourages the love of writing AND animals. Win-win in my book! It's nice to see that guinea pigs were mentioned in one of the winning poems.
