Which way to Bay? Baby sea lion rescued on freeway

Browse News

SAN FRANCISCO -- A baby sea lion wandered onto a busy San Francisco Bay area freeway Monday morning but, after a ride in the back seat of a police car, was safe and resting at a marine center later in the day.

Drivers on Interstate 880 started calling authorities around 5:45 a.m. to report the animal "walking" in the center divider near the Oakland Coliseum, said Peter Van Eckhardt, an officer with the California Highway Patrol.

He said the sea lion likely reached land from a nearby San Francisco Bay estuary and crossed the roadway in the middle of the night.

The animals do wander onto Bay area roadways from time to time, Van Eckhardt said. A male sea lion was found waddling on a busy street in Richmond in May, but died from malnutrition.

"It definitely happens on occasion," Van Eckhardt said. "This is pretty off the beaten path for them to come in this far."

An Oakland police officer driving near the coliseum Monday morning loaded the small, grey-coated sea lion into the back of his patrol car and took it to an animal control center, Van Eckhardt said.

Several officers later tried to get the animal, nicknamed "Fruitvale" for the Oakland neighborhood where it was found, into a cage, but it jumped underneath the patrol car. The pup eventually was rounded up and taken to The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, a nonprofit facility that helps sick and injured marine animals. Jim Oswald, a spokesman for the center, said the animal is active and alert but slightly malnourished.

"I'm sure it was pretty traumatic to go through what (it) did today," Oswald said. "(It) seems to be doing fine."

Veterinarians wanted to give the animal a chance to rest, but they plan to undertake a more thorough medical evaluation Tuesday, Oswald said.

The center has seen a spike this year in the number of weakened and malnourished sea lions found along the Northern California coast. In a recent week, staff at the center rescued 10 more sea lions a day than usual.

Experts say the increase could be caused by a drop in the number of smaller fish that younger sea lions rely on for food while they are developing.

Just read a story about an 11 month old sea lion pup transferred to the Houston, TX, zoo. He had been rescued three times, twice in northern California. After the third time, they felt he had become to dependent on humans to try and release him again. He also had been injured at one time, they believe trash got wrapped around his neck. That's a lot happening to one little critter in just 11 months.

Stories like this make me sad, animals are having a hard time living due to shortages of food in their natural habitat - As we continue with more Urban sprawl we just do not understand the hardship this causes to the many animals who have made this land and waterways their homes...

I'm so glad they were able to rescue this baby & get him to safety before something horrible happened. Its terrible that they're seeing so many malnourished sea lions now. Wonder what's causing the dwindling supply of food fish? I'm sure we're responsible in some way, be it over-fishing, global warming, pollution...we've probably upset the ecosystem.

It does make you wonder what's going on if they are rescue 10 more per day than normal. That's a lot of increase. And, more than likely, humans are responsible. Wonder if the increase is just in this one area or if it's a widespread problem.

it's just fabulous that this sweetie was rescued and doing fine now -- the fact that so many are found to be malnourished is bothersome and has much to do with the environment and our oceans -- can you imagine there not being enough fish in the sea -- how are sea animals supposed to live? This fact is quite frightening. We must do something to reverse this trend -- and, i hope it's only a trend -- ii believe it's bigger than that.

So glad this pup was rescued. But also sad that there is an increase in the number of sea lions getting stranded on shore. Their food supply dwindling. Another sign of global warming and nature and wildlife is suffering???

So sad it has to go so far to try to find food. In Oregon we weren´t allowed to touch the baby seals waiting for their mothers to come back for them. Sometimes they would be there for days before their mothers returned with food.
