When 'Hope' Becomes 'Art' All Things Are Possible

Browse News

Hope, the abandoned puppy born with only two legs, enjoys a new home, a new name, and even two new sets of wheels. The dog now called Art lives an active life three other dogs and a retired veterinarian. All in all, Art gets around.

ORLANDO, Fla. --- Hope, the abandoned the puppy born with only two legs, has a new home, a new name, and new mobility. The dog now called Art lives an active life with three other dogs and a retired veterinarian. And he gets around.

“I just fell in love with him,” Art’s new owner, Robert Weigle said. “He's taught me more than years of veterinary training has, and a lot about life priorities."

Added Weigle, "He’s just a happy dog and he’s very intelligent and if one thing doesn’t work, he’ll work around it and find a way that does” Weigle said.

Weigle built Art two makeshift wheelchairs, one with four wheels and one with two, which Art uses when he leaves the house.

“He’s really isn’t overly-fond of either of them, unless we’re in a strange area where he gets around and socializes with people,” Weigle said.

When he’s at home, Art prefers to be free of his wheelchairs. “He gets around very well on his own,” Weigle said.

Art and his eight siblings were newborns when they were found in a box shortly before Christmas by the side of an Orlando highway. They were brought to a local shelter, Pet Rescue by Judy. Seven of the puppies were healthy, but Art's two front legs were stumps.

Volunteer Judy Walker fostered Art for about three months until he was ready for his new home. Then he had to put on weight before he use a wheelchair. At 10 months old, he weighs 25 pounds and has adapted to his new name and home.

Recently, Art's former foster caregiver, Walker, had a chance to see Art for the first time since he left her home in March.

“He’s happy and that’s all I wanted,” Walker said. For Walker, it's come full circle: Art the puppy born with two legs is happy, healthy and active.

“It’s amazing what love can do, especially with animals,” she said.

With all the constant negative daily news locally, it is wonderful to read something positive. Go Art! Now I must wonder why the local TV channels can't take the time to broadcast this happy ending.....

There is not one person on earth, that couldn't learn a lesson from Art. What wonderful animal. If there were more human's like him, this world would be a better place. Animals have no idea they are disabled, and I believe they are this way because they aren't disabled. They go on living their lives, as if they only have a few minor disadvantages. I bet he would be wonderful as a visiting canine to pediatric wards and nursing homes. He would give people, especially children, more hope, faith and motivation. God bless all the people, who took the time and gave all thier love to Art until, he was ready to go to a permanent home. Art is a lucky dog to be found by someone who loved animals enough to take all those pups and a temporarily disadvantaged pup, get them the help they needed and eventually to permanent homes. But most of all, the retired vet got the best deal of all.........he got Art. I hope they will keep us updated on Art, atleast on a yearly basis because he is bound to do great things. Thank you ZooToo, for putting this upliftging article on this site, so I could end my day with a smile on my face and a heart full of happiness.

This special needs puppy brought a special quality to his new home and owner. The video show that he is pretty quick in hopping around on 2 back legs. This puppy may not be able to do everything a 4 legged pup can do, but it isn't holding him back. Special needs or disabled are just as capable as any other creature, just may take more time to accomplish a task than the average creature. You get hopping, Art!

that is such a great story and an inspiration. I am so glad he was given a chance at what is now a happy life. He is so cute. I love stories with a happy ending. it never ceases to amaze me just what animals are capable of. If only humans were so willing to adapt and make the best of a bad situation. the world would be a lot happier place if we all lived like 2 legged dogs. :-)

People need to be reminded that just because animals are disabled doesn't mean they should automatically be 'put down'. I also have a disabled bird who can't stand, but she has a good life and is happy.

I have heard that animals that have disabilities have an extra special quality about them, and I can tell you it's true. For what Pickles has had to endure, she is the sweetest little bird you ever saw. Her personality is so sweet and gentle. I almost gave her up one time when I was thinning out my flock because I had too many birds, but I cried so hard, I had really fallen in love with her. I had spend a whole year trying to help her get to where she could move herself around, and she takes daily medicine without a fight. She is a special bird.

Stories like these are so inspirational-animals don't let these things get them down. They adapt instead of feeling sorry about themselves (not that I'm downplaying this sort of thing with any being).
