War-torn Troops Soothed by Horses’ Spirit

Browse News

MIAMI -- The science of the human-animal bond is proving very effective in a new arena: on the home front of a new war. Returning veterans are finding help, as well as healing in therapy that involves a saddle and a set of reins.

"It feels pretty good. I feel tall," said U.S. Marine Gene Calonge, who recently returned from his deployment.

Learning to ride again is strengthening the bodies and minds of young vets here at the South Florida Veterans Multi-Purpose Center in Davie, Fla.

The last time Calonge mounted a horse, was his service with the Marine Corps. This time around it's Sam, a 4-year-old Arabian, giving him a much-needed boost.

"It's different bonding with an animal, you feel like you're not going to be judged so much about anything so ... you and him just have a good time,” said Calonge.

A crowd of people recently gathered to celebrate the grand opening of a new facility. It's got all the features needed to accommodate a growing Equine Therapy Program that started one year ago. Professional horse trainers and mental health experts work with the Veterans, using a very powerful tool: the love and respect of a horse.

"A horse is a prey animal,' said Bob Bambury, the executive director of the South Florida Veterans Multi-Purpose Center. “So it's used to being attacked by predators. So it has a ‘stand-offish’ effect. You're going to have to bond with that horse before you're going to develop any kind of relationship.”

The year-old program has been successful in helping treat dozens of soldiers with afflictions ranging from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome to combat-related mental illnesses and physical disabilities.

“As we know, our returning men and women have been exposed to an awful lot of trauma. And so when we begin to go back into that, often times there's a flood of emotion and just a great deal of discomfort emotionally that begins to happen,” said Lorisa Lewis, a certified equine therapist and licensed mental health counselor.

“By working with the horses, we are working in an alternative way,” Lewis said. “It's a way that's a bit gentler, it's kind of like going in a back door if you will, rather than barging in through the front door.”

Organizers say Veterans really benefit from environment. They welcome therapy sessions in the arena, versus the sterile environment of a doctor's office.

“I don't think you can get the same experience in a doctor's office, talking to a doctor, because you still have the feelings of anxiety,” said Calonge. “There are certain things you don't really talk to another person about. But the horses don't seem to mind.”

“It really works quicker, we accomplish an awful lot in the arena,” said Lewis. “We set up structured exercises and cognitively we do what's called gestalt therapy, where we can learn a concept without having to go directly to a trauma and go through that channel. Our research is showing that it's a very effective way of working with returning vets.”

Some veterans, who have been through this before, see equine therapy as a new way to help Soldiers make a smooth transition.

“With the new war, we're dealing with a whole new set of Veterans coming home,” said Bambury. “We're Vietnam veterans here and we've been through this before. We would just like to catch these young guys when they're coming home and to get them adjusted back into society the right way.”

By getting them back in the saddle, on American soil.

I agree with Abbie, what a great use of our tax dollars. It would be even better if more rescue horses could be trained to help with therapy.

Back in the saddle again!!! What a great way to help our returning soldiers. Any kind of therapy involving animals is beneficial, because the quiet results multiply the feelings they need to work through and deal with, and ultimately put in their past

What a terrific program. We all know the power of animals, all kinds of animals. All of us on this site have been helped in one way or another by our pets or other animals. These soldiers can have the same experience and hopefully deal with their negative war memories. Good job!

Not many know the healing power, unique to horses. It is almost uncanny how the horses "just know."

It is nice to know there are those that are willing to help, animals can sense when there is trauma, Horses especially. A horse reacts to the body language of a human and riding helps put both at ease. Great therapy for the right individual.

I love horses! They help so many people including myself. I am 15 and work at a horse camp for girls as a camp counselor/supervisor. So many girls find themselves with horses. It boosts their self image so much. I enjoy it a lot.

Another beautiful story of horses helping people heal. Unknown by many, horses are natural healers. They have a way of "knowing."

A very good book on this is, "The Tao of Equus," by Linda Kohanov. A beautiful read...and her sequel too! The true depth and spirit of horses and their relationship to and with humans.

I am a therapeutic riding instructor and have seen first hand how much horses can do for people both mentally and physically. I have seen autistic kids begin to open up to the horses; kids who wouldnt talk to anyone begin to open up to the horse they rode and kids who had trouble walking begin to improve with their motor skills. Horses are wonderful for all types of therapy for all ages!!!

Animals are definitely very therapeutic. They somehow lift stress immediately. This program is a wonderful idea. I hope they use rescue horses, that would be even nicer, therapy for both the people and the horses. I think the program also helps develop an even higher respect for animals because the soldiers get a one on one chance of really bonding with the horses, learning about them and respecting them.

Equine therapy is awesome! It's heartwarming to see such a program set up and run by apparently dedicated individuals who love their horses and respect the veterns.

Best of luck to them all!

I rescue horses and can completely understand the connection. I think Will Rogers once said, "there is something about the outside of horse thats good for the inside of a man." Horses are extremely therpeutic and wonderful and we would be honored to give this group one of our rescue horses, we currently have 11 horses in therpeutic riding programs around the country!

First off, Sam the horse is an Arabian. My favorite and he looks alot like my boy Billy. ( I will get pictures up soon) I just love programs like this. I have heard of many heartwarming stories that included a horse and someone who needed a big neck to cry on. It is unbelievable what a horse can do for you mentally and physically. I can not tell you how many times I have turned to my equine buddies for comfort. When my dad passed away a few years ago, all I wanted to do was go for a ride. They are wonderful animals that I am lucky enough to have in my life.

Horses are great therapy animals. I used to be an OT & lots of my patients have benefited from equine therapy. They're amazing animals. I had horses my entire life. They seem to have a sixth sense about things & they're so patient. I'm glad they're able to help the troops.
