Victim: Attacking Cheetahs Not to Blame

Browse News

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- A woman who was attacked by two cheetahs over the weekend is back to work this week. She said the incident wasn’t as severe as it initially appeared.

On Saturday, March 29, Judy Berens was giving a demonstration from the inside of the cheetah cage at the Panther Ridge Conservation Center near West Palm Beach.

Visitors to her big cat refuge were learning about the world’s fastest animal when a small boy kicked a ball toward the fenced enclosure.

The cats lunged for the toy, but Berens was between them and the ball.

“Any big cat, when they lose their focus, they will generally jump in on what is the next available thing, and in this case it was me,” she told Meredith Veira on the Today Show.

In a flash, the cats were on top of the 58-year old –- a reaction she says was not surprising.

Refuge volunteers jumped in to her aid, spraying the animals down with water. The felines, which originally came to the refuge from South Africa, backed down almost immediately.

In the few moments of the attack, the cheetahs named Matt and Charley inflicted a number of wounds, about 40 minor punctures on her neck and torso from their sharp nails. Berens suffered deep cuts to her arms as well. Still, she was back to work Monday.

“I’m feeling absolutely OK,” she said.

Berens said regardless of the attack, she won’t stop caring for the cheetahs and 21 other big cats she provides sanctuary for.

“ … if you make a commitment to bring these animals into your life and to work with them, there’s an assumed risk of going in with them and you’re going to every so often have a little altercation or have a moment where things don’t go 100 percent,” she said.

The wildlife conservationist said her rescue is meant to inform people about the power of animals like Matt and Charley -- a fact that was proven over the weekend. She plans to keep a watchful eye on the cheetahs.

“Well, what I’m going to do is keep all my normal protocols in place and just go on a day by day basis re-bonding with these animals,” said Berens. “Yes initially I’m going to be much more vigilant about security but the bonding between me and these animals is what makes this place very special.

I'm really glad she doesn't blame the animal for this accident. It is sad to here about a "wild" animal to be blamed and punished/killed for doing something they didn't know was wrong.

I am happy to here that she doesn't blame the animals. No matter how long they have been handled or how they were raised. They are still wild animals.

Well, I think the take home lesson is that children need to be closely supervised around all animals and educated. I have been at zoos where children knock on the glass, run to and fro in front of enclosures, screaming and jumping around and the paretns do nothing. I hope the woman will now use her close call to continue her education of the public.

I am glad that she is okay. Obviously the most important part of the story. But I must say a big thank you to her too. For taking care of such beautiful animals and truly understanding them. Realizing that this is the nature. God bless her!

These big kitties are very fortunate to have this kind, understanding person looking after them. I am pleased about how it was handled also. The cheetahs were sprayed with water first to get them to stop the attack, instead of just killing them. I'm tired of hearing about these beautiful wild cats being killed because some stupid idiot person provoked them in the first place. People need to keep their hands out of cages away from the wild animals, and not throw things at that them to provoke them to anger. People need to stop teasing animals and treat them with the dignity and respect they deserve!

I have always thought we are doing a bad thing trying to make pets out of wild animals. They are not pets!

I agree it's never the animals vault. Wild animals are WILD. No matter how they are raised or the kindness they are shown they will always remain wild. It took millions of year to domesticate dogs and cats. Look how often they revert to their primal self. The instinctive part of them is always there. I think people expect too much from them. I hand raised many wild creatures and let me tell you they would rip me apart if I did anything they didn't agree with. That's who they are.

I am a little annoyed that parents would allow the boy to be playing with a ball during this show anyway. This woman could have been severely injured to killed and this beautiful animal would have been put down to to human stupidity. I am happy she understands why it happened and she will continue what she is doing but I hope enforce severe restrictions as to what you can bring into that area.

I am glad she sees it for what it was, the cats reacted to what happened not necessarily against her. I am shocked that they would allow anything except the people in the area around the event. Especially if you allow children near the exhibits.

maybe places like this should make a check at the door for things like ball so this kind of accident might not happen again

Great attitude. I would anticipate that some protocols would change at the facility after an incident like this. I still don't understand how it seems everyone gets the treat wild animals with respect thing here, but not with the sea lion story... What makes sea lions different?
Anyhow, I'm glad she's ok. I still think about the tiger attack earlier this year, that was horrific. I still feel like the tiger lost on all fronts.

the one in CA? I know some guy lost his life but everything I read I still believe they instigated and caused it to happen. I haven't heard anything beyond a couple weeks. I hope they fined the other two.

Great story! I agree with Judy Berens there is a level of assumed risk when you work with any animal. A horse could injure you as quickly as the cheetahs could. It is a passion of hers to work with the cats and educate the public and I applaud her for her work. She has made a commitment and she accepts the risk involved. She is an awesome person with a great understanding of these gorgeous creatures.

Judy Berens understands her animals. Of course, the cheetahs were not to blame for the "attack" and technically it was not an attack. I do have one difficulty with this story--why are the cheetahs in Florida when the article points out they came to the Panther Ridge Conservation Center from South Africa?

I would have been frightened by the incident. I don't think I would call it an attack, as the animals were chasing a moving object, and the victim was in the way. I work with wild canines and you have to be extremely virulent as to where the animals are at all times and aware the mood of the animals. Kudos to the victim who keeps working with the animals though she will be wary for a while

This is a wonderful lady to take these animals and still remember that they are not pets and not infalible. I think the right response was made. She does not hold the animals at fault. She admits to needing to recheck security measures. Thank goodness she was not seriously injured!

From reading the stories, sure doesn't seem like they attacked her at all. They went for that kids ball that hit the fence and she was between them and got caught up in their excitement. The injuries were from their claws, no bites mentioned.
I do commend her for getting right back into the swing of things. She truly loves these animals and knows that it wasn't their fault. She is a brave, honorable woman.

This is a committed woman!!! Its not about watching your children because who would realize that something so trivial would cause such an upset. Things just sometimes happen. No one is to blame. The cheetahs were just following their instinct. I commend Judy Berens!!
