Good Samaritan Aids Woman and Dog

Browse News

SACRAMENTO – A California man is being called a hero after he came to the aid of a woman and her dog who were being attacked by another canine.

According to witness reports, Joann Golden and her Jack-Russell Terrier-Chihuahua-mix, Cody, were attacked by a neighbor's dog. The pit bull, named Boss, allegedly grabbed Cody's throat. The small dog's owner tried to intervene, but Boss then went after her.

That's when 39-year-old Jeff Madeira stepped in. He had been driving by and saw the attack. He ran from his car and was able to scare the pit bull off, which ran back to its owner's house.

Madeira then drove Golden and her dog home. In the rush to get the dog to the vet, Golden neglected to get the full name of the hero.

A media frenzy about the Good Samaritan followed the incident, and the two parties reunited a few days later. Unfortunately, it was a sad reunion, because Cody died from his injuries.

Mrs. Golden suffered injuries to her hands, but is expected to fully recover.

Sacramento County Animal Control later quarantined Boss. A senior shelter employee said the dog qualifies for a vicious dog case. The dog's owners could opt for him to be euthanized depending on the outcome of such a case.

This story has undoubtedly only added to the stereotype associated with pit bulls. Pet Pulse has learned that in November of 2006, Boss was involved in a similar case that was reported to authorities. Apparently he attacked a dog and bit a person – a situation nearly identical to this one.

According to animal control officials, Boss's family has opted to have him euthanized since this is his second incident. He is slated for euthanasia this Thursday, Jan. 16th.

California law allows dog owners to forego a vicious dog hearing in cases such as this – and that's what Boss's owners have decided to do. If they so chose, they could opt to put him through obedience training. They have apparently decided no to go in that direction.

Poor dog. It's sad to hear he died of his injuries, and that the pitt-bull was euthanized. His owners should have trained him better...

If people want to continue to have pit bulls, they need to take more responsibility for them and make sure they are secure in their yard or fence. Even mild mannered pit bulls can all of a sudden decide to attack a small dog or child. We have had loose pit bulls in our neighborhood and they are worse if there is more than one. These dogs are scary and although i don't support banning them. i wish people would realize that these dogs have stronger jaws than other dogs and when they clamp down, they do not want to let go. They are really not safe to have around unless you can keep them confined and train them correctly.

I guess it's for the best to have him euthanized seeing this is a 2nd attack.

With such quick action I had hoped that Cody would have been spared. It takes a brave person to jump in the middle of a dog attack. This, again, just adds fuel to the fire of stories about pit bull attacks - what do we need to do? I'm sorry that Boss is going to be put down but I don't want any other dog or person going through this. The greater the number of stories, the more worried I get.

My heart breaks for Cody - I was so hoping for a happy ending while reading this. What a terrific man to help Cody and his owner - most people would have kept on driving. I feel sorry for Boss as well - I think the owners need to be investigated since there was a previous incident. I really believe that there are no bad dogs - only bad people. Boss may have been trained to be aggressive by his owners and they should be held responsible for that.

I'm glad this guy was there to help, but the poor little dog. I hope the owners of this dog go to jail for this. The dog could have killed the woman.

Thank goodness this man was there. What are people thinking when they don't properly contain animals who have a tendency for this type of thing?

This did not need to happen. The pit should never have been running free! I wonder how many people and animals it would have attacked if no one had stepped in to make the owners do something! They should not be allowed to have another dog if they are that irresponsible!

This is so sad. But thankfully there are people out there willing to help others at a time like that. And it's so sad that people think they can raise pitbulls. I truly think people underestimate the responsibility.

Yet again, another story of owners who didn't properly take care of their dog.

I'm thankful the woman and her dog are both okay. They were lucky that Jeff wasn't afraid to get involved. It's sad that the owners of the pit didn't learn their lesson the first time. I can't imagine why they didn't keep the dog in a secure area. They are lucky someone wasn't seriously injured or killed. Sad.

I'm surprised he was not put down after the first attack. Thankfully the man was driving by @ the right time & was able to scare the dog off. I don't think the owners of the pit bull should wait around for a 3rd attack either. I hate to say it, but I think they are doing the right thing.

Very sorry to hear about Cody. Thank goodness Jeff Madiera stopped to help out. To bad about Boss too. Strong dogs need strong leadership and I think that is part of the bad rap pit bulls get. You have to be able to control your dog so they are not a menace to the neighborhood.

So Sad for both dogs and the lady who lost her dog and shouldn't have. I love pitbulls they are not bad dogs, they require an owner that will be responsiable for them and take time to train them properly and socialize them. I have a lot of disrespect for the owners of the pitbull in this case, this didn't have to happen, I say don't ban the breed ban the wrong owners for the breed. Not everyone should own a pit or rott or any other mastif breed.

Same old story, same old question. Why was Boss running free? Irresponsible ownership pure and simple. Bos was not in a secure fenced-in location, nor was he on a leash accompanied by his human companion--and he was already guilty of attacking another person and their dog. Thankfully Mr. Madeira came along when he did. It is sad and terrible that little Cody died of his injuries, but this story would have been even moe tragic. Sad also that Boss had to be euthanized, but for reasons we will never know, he was obviously a bad dog.

How was this dog able to get out? Why wasn't he restrained or fenced in? Why wasn't something done after the first incident? I hope those owners never get another dog. That poor lady, and that poor little dog. He never had a chance. What a selfless thing for that corageous man to do. He is to be commended.
