UNITED KINGDOM – The Assembly Government in Wales plans to review legislation that would ban the sale and use of shock collars there.
The devices are typically used to aid in dog training, but some fear they may contradict animal welfare legislation.
An investigation has been launched into the subject, and relay its findings when it ends in February.
The inquiry will look into all varieties of collar training, including remote and bark controlled devices. The remote device allows a trainer to shock the animal at his discretion. The bark version jolts the dog if it barks too loudly.
If banned, the legislation would be introduced under the Animal Welfare Act – but testimony will be heard from both sides of the issue before a decision is made.
A final debate and vote will be held by the National Assembly.

I was disgusted and angry and I don't even want to think about how many mean people turn the voltage all the way up to mean.
These things are horrible!

There was a time when after hours & hours, and months of conventional training my shelter dog was still uncontrollable. A local vet suggested the use of one of those choker collars that have the points that dig into the dogs neck when pressure is applied. I couldn't bring myself to do that so I took someone elses suggestion and looked into a shock trainer. Before I ever tried it on my dog I TRIED IT ON MYSELF, just as I did with the invisible fence. That is how I know that I am not hurting my dog with its use.
This issue goes back to the same old same old. If you love your dog, you will use the product in the manner it was intended. I have very rarely ever had to use the shcok option when training my dogs, even the one who was resistant to every other "acceptable" form of training. I usually use the tone, but it is occassionally necessary to use the shock feature. I cry when I hit a squirrel while driving so no one could say that I am unfeeling towards animals and hurting them.
