Tx. Mayor Faces Felony Counts in Dog Case

Browse News

ALICE, Tx. - We first reported on the Texas mayor who stole her neighbor's dog in the beginning of January. Since then, Mayor Grace Saenz-Lopez of Alice, Tx., has been indicted on two felony counts for tampering with physical evidence related to the case.

She faces 10 years in prison for each count; 1 concealment and one falsifying of evidence.

This story originally came to our attention because the mayor claims she rescued the dog from its owners. As the story goes, Saenz-Lopez's neighbors asked her to care for the dog while they went on vacation over the summer.

The dog was reportedly deathly ill – and Saenz-Lopez alleged that the owners were neglecting it. She called them the day after they left for vacation and said the dog, named Puddles, had died. In fact, the dog was alive, but Saenz-Lopez was convinced it would die if back in the original owners' control. So she kept it and cared for it, even renaming it Panchito.

A few months later, an extended family member of the original owners spotted the dog at a local groomer. The original owners accused Saenz-Lopez of stealing, while she claimed they were negligent. A lawsuit was filed by the owners, but Saenz-Lopez pledged to fight for ownership of the dog.

Following that, the mayor hid the dog at her twin sister's home and later filed a report that it had gone missing.

But last week after authorities learned of her plot when a local reporter covering the missing-dog story discovered it at the sister's home.

According to the mayor's sister, a mystery woman found Puddles and dropped if off. The sister has also received a felony charge for concealing the animal.

A civil case will be hear on Feb. 4th, to determine who should be the rightful owner. It convicted of tampering with evidence, Mayor Saenz-Lopez will lose her mayorship and faces 20 years in prison. Her sister faces 10 years inprisonment.

The Mayor should have known better. She is a public official. Stealing a dog and telling the owners it died. How heartless can this woman be? And then to continually lie about it.

Well, was the dog neglected or not? If it was, then she needs to prove it! There are too many animals out there to take someone elses.

I don't know if she thought she was doing something right or if she just wanted the dog. To lie to the owners and say it had died is just cruel. Is there any proof it was in that bad of shape when she got it? She should not be a mayor in any town.

I'd like to think the mayor was doing what she thought was the right thing--however weird her way of going about. I hope the original owner treats this dog well from now on.

It sounds like the Mayor was thinking she was doing what would be best for the dog, but she was certainly going about it in the wrong way. She should have been aware of the laws, but perhaps she let her emotions get the best of her. I hope this turns out allright for everyone and that the little dog is well take care of.

I can understand if she really thought the dog would come to some harm, but there are laws and rules to follow and being the mayor she should know them.

I hope that it stays with the person who cares for it the most and not the original owner that treated it badly.

There are LEGAL ways to handle this. Especially as a mayor, she should have reported the alleged abuse, not stolen the dog!

If the animal was actually abused and neglected, she should have called the police so she had proof! A mayor knows the proper proceedures so I feel she did steal the dog!

The mayor handled this all wrong and should pay the price for what she did. Two wrongs don't make it right! I'm not sure I believe her story.

If this mayor really thought this pet was being abused or neglected she should have called a humane investigator in to handle the problem, She should know the right procedure in cases like this, she just wanted the pooch for herself, how dumb to take it out in a public place.

I'd like to know if the mayor took the dog to the vet and has documentation of the neglect. If not, I'd say she is a dognapper and deserves punishment fitting the crime.

Why does it neglect to let us know if the dog was actually sick or not? That would help make an informed opinion on the situation.

Wow..this is such an odd story. The mayor was just looking out for the pup, can you blame her? There were probably other ways to go about it if that were really the case though, use common sense

I don't know what to think of this story to tell you the truth. Was the dog really not being taken care of by the owners? We won't know by just reading this article. Being a mayor though she sure could have been smarter than that. There are proper ways of doing things when a dog needs to be taken away from its owners for neglect etc. I would take a guess that the mayor herself is not real bright to begin with. You can't just steal someones pet wether its a dog, cat, bird, snake, or gerbil. Stealing is stealing & punishable by law.

This is also an interesting story. This woman was obviously worried about the care the dog was receiving with it's original owners. She probably became very attached to it and hated see it be returned to them. I know she thought she was doing the right thing, but she could have handled it a little better. I hope the dog will be okay.

It is a very sad story. I hate to see any animal abused or neglected. At the same time, she would have been better off contacting someone else to take care of the situation. Just because she is mayor does not give her the suthority to take the law into her own hands.

She should have contacted the proper authorities if she thought the animal would have died if it was returned to its owners. In her position she should have known better than do what she did, even though her motives might have been good.

The sad part is this mayor probably knew she had little legal recourse to protect the dog and made a poor judgement faced with the fact the animals have no legal rights

I'm sure she had good intentions, she just used the wrong approach. As mayor, she had a lot of services at her availability. She did not have to resort to the methods she used.

She's not fit to be Mayor! Just because she says the dog was abused, doesn't make it so. Sounds to me like she just wanted that dog so she "stole" it. Very dishonest person.

I hope they convict both of these women. How ridiculous is this. A mayor should be educated enough that if she truely suspected the owners were neglecting the dog she should have turned them over to the police for them to investigate. It sounds like she wanted a dog but didn't want to pay for one or go through the adoption process.

How bizarre a story - why would a mayor jeopardize their career with dog napping. If there was really was an abuse issue than it should have been handled properly and maybe she could have legally adopted the dog later. Sounds like she was not fit to be mayor anyway.
