Two-Nosed Bunny Needs a Name

Browse News

MILFORD, Conn. -- With double sniffing abilities, a special rabbit at a Connecticut pet store has been deemed too good to sell.

Purr-Fect Pets Inc., located in Milford, is committed to finding its two-nosed baby dwarf rabbit a home as special as his unique appearance.

"We want to make sure he has a really good home with people who will appreciate him," said Iris Bergeron, Purr-Fect Pets employee and proclaimed "bunny master."

The unnamed bunny was delivered to Purr-Fect Pets last week.

"The breeder came in with these two bags of rabbits and I like I always do, I took them in the back and checked them all out, to make sure they aren't sick or anything," Bergeron told Zootoo Pet News.

"He was the last one I pulled out of the bag and I just looked at him and was like, 'Am I seeing things?' "

Yet Bergeron was not seeing -- or smelling -- double.

The bunny indeed has two noses, but as his veterinarian said, does not have two nasal passages to match. So while he may not experience heightened smelling senses, the bunny does twitch both of his noses simultaneously.

The vet suspects a birth defect is to blame for the bunny's unique appearance -- yet she also said that it could be the result of the rabbit's parents' potential exposure to pesticides.

To Bergeron and the rest of the staff at Purr-Fect Pets, however, he is just "a regular ole' bunny rabbit."

"I think he's cute," Bergeron said. "His nose just seems kinda extra sensitive. He is very pretty, a very nice looking rabbit with nice blue eyes

"He hops like a normal rabbit, drinks, eats, plays, and is perfectly normal. He likes being held, now, because he is used to it. It's pretty cool."

Purr-Fect Pets is now turning to the public to name the bunny in a nationwide contest. The winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to the pet store. Some submissions include "Deuce," "Cyrano de Bergerac," "Twitch," and "Sniffers."

To nominate a name for the double-nosed bunny, call Purr-Fect Pets at 203-874-9250, or send a letter to 286 Boston Post Rd., Milford, Ct., 06460.

Sigh. This story is really sad. I really wonder why the breeders did not notice that the bunny had two noses....probably because they have been cooped up in the bunny mill. And why are the buns being transported in bags??? That is alarming.
I wish pet stores wouldn't sell buns, and breeders should have to adhere to stricter laws and much stricter code of ethics.

Also the store manager says "BAGS" of bunnies. Does he mind elaborating on that and tell us why they come in bags?
I also want to know why this guy is proclaimed the Bunny Master.
Also another example quote: " he was the last one I pulled out of the bag......."
Why was the bunny in a BAG in the first place?
This article makes me so angry to see how people do not get how bad things are that we have two nosed bunnies. That isn't right people!!!

This story is not a oh how neat story, this is a wake up call. That bunny would be normal if it wasn't for careless breeders and and pet stores who buy anything they can sell. That poor bunny is not a cool animal to be admired that animal should have people feel bad for him and think about pets shops and back yard breeders. Unfortunately this is only the beginning of the mutations and this bunny had to be an example. Hopefully a nice caring person will get this rabbit and love it not have it just to be a collector of weird mutations or some lame want to be cool person's new show and tell object.

I am really disappointed that Zootoo ran this story without any commentary as to the inhumaneness of selling live animals at pet stores--haven't we read enough puppy mill stories! The owner of the store notes that the "breeder came in with these two BAGS of rabbits and like I ALWAYS do, I took them in the back and checked them out...."Bags of rabbits, bunnies sold in far too many cases to ignorant or irresponsible people, all for a buck! This two-nosed bunny isn't something to be marveled at, it is something to cry about!

It seems to me the pet store owner would know this must be from inbreeding and would not purchase from his supplier. Another pet that needs to be stopped from being sold in pet stores~

The bags is pretty evil, and defects dont just happen from overbreeding or pesticides it could be from the female rabbit. People would never know.

This story disgusts me. They are making a big deal out of a bunny with a birth defect that likely happened from breeding bad lines and in-breeding way too much. I can't stand pet stores that sell live animals. It's not improving the breed, lengthening life span, or anything good - it's just supporting the mass over population of animals. I'm saddened that they made a contest out of this. Breeding mills need stopped. However, it's much more fun to get bunnies with two noses than to stop cruelty..................(sarcasm). And WHY are the buns transported in bags??? omg?? How EVIL. I would never support that pet store.

I agree the bags part is sickening. But years ago, animals with defects I am sure were put down. At least now they arent.

I agree. This is a very disturbing story. Most people don't realize how quickly bunnies can reproduce and how big of a back yard breeding ring it really is. I worked at a pet store and our bunnies came from a handful of breeder and we got new bunnies in ALL the time. Most go to ok home, but a lot of these bunnies are released into the wild because people think they'll be ok once the responsibility gets to be too much. Birth defects like shown here happen all the time to more important parts and leads to death. Real cute huh?

I have to agree with you. Unfortunately its the time of year. Easter time always brings about the sale of more rabbits because parents want to get their children these cute cuddly little "toys." Then once Easter had come and gone the rabbit grows up, the kids loose interest, and there's not always a happy ending. The pet stores definitely just add to the problem. On a less sour note I'm happy the little bunny is doing well, he sure is a cute little thing. I hope he gets well taken care of and has a long happy life.

Wonderful for this Bunny, but as Easter approaches, other bunnies will be going to homes where they might not be so well taken care of. I do not believe in giving children bunnies or chicks for Easter. It is a bad idea all around. How ironic that this story comes out right before Easter...

How's about we have a nationwide contest to see who can come up with the best idea to stop pet mills and cruelty to animals? What a story!

Why are bunnies delivered in bags? What's wrong with a crate like they use for dogs? I would think putting several bunnies in a bag would be a terrifying ordeal for them. And why not get a special home for all of the rabbits, not just this one? Every bunny needs a special home. I can understand having a contest to name this unique little one.

I was thinking the same thing as I read this article. This bothered me, they are still taking in bunnies from breeders too. Every animal deserves to go to people who will care for them and love them. And if the bunny was born this way because of it's parents being exposed to pesticides that would be from the breeder.

That bunny is cute...though why were they delivered in BAGS?

Anyway, I hope that they screen for proper homes for all their animals! (though I doubt it) Not just this bunny!

And bunnies are for life, not just for Easter!

Why is this animal getting so much publicity? I saw it on Fox news yesterday. What a way to stir up the community. But, at least they plan on finding a good home that will use the bunny for pet therapy.

Seems like a result of inbreeding. You have to be pretty careful w/ small animals because they're so hard to sex, unfortunately inbreeding happens alot.

Thats what got me..I had to go back and read that again..What kind of a bag would you transport an animal in? As far as the bunny goes, well thats the way things go..there are all kinds of different deformaties with as many causes. Narrowing it down with this bunny could be quite the task. As long as he is healthy and happy and finds a good home, I guess thats all that matters...:)

I suppose this is an example of poor breeding, but rabbits being what they are, it's gotta be tough. I think he's cute, though, and as long as he's healthy, I am sure somebody who loves bunnies will love him.
