Woman's Hobby Forges Path to Games

SECAUCUS, N.J. -- Achieving big goals starts with a dream -- but for Andrea Leatherman -- going for the gold means horse-y-ing around!

Riding horses isn't just a hobby for some people. The 23-year-old Leatherman -- who has been riding for 15 years -- is setting her eyes on the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and saving her four-legged partners in the meantime.

On Tuesday, Leatherman traveled from South Carolina to the Horse Park of New Jersey for a three-day equestrian event, called Jersey Fresh, where she competed with her horse “Revere Road.”

Leatherman also intends on competing in the World Games in 2010.

“It’s in two years (which is) a good time-frame. And then if that goes well, I’ll probably want to stay in horseback riding and go for the Olympics, cause it’s a goal that most athletes attain for,” Leatherman said.

Riding horses isn’t Leatherman’s only passion -- she also rescues them, (and) then trains those horses in hopes of finding them a new owner.

“I’ve been going up to the race tracks and pick(ing) out horses that are sound; seem like they have a good mind and have all the basics to become an event horse or a hunter, and then I’ll buy it and re-train it,” Leatherman said. “In a sense it is giving them another home and something else to do. They are so young and they still have so much potential.”

Leatherman feels it is important to have a strong relationship with her horses.

“They really trust you -- you can form this incredible relationship where they look to you for trust,” Leatherman said. “It is really a team effort where you help each other out. I think that’s when people underestimate the power of another being to influence something else.”

Leathermans placed sixth in her division at the Jersey Fresh competition, which was held last weekend in Allentown New Jersey.

I often wonder what happens to the horses who aren't fast enough or just aren't good enough. Good job!

Hello, my name is Jeannine Gingras. I am Andrea's mom. Let me say this simply. I am so proud of her achievements and am inspired about her passion, her dedication, her role modeling for younger equestrians aspiring to this high level of competition. Andrea has such a GREAT heart and a true love and respect of her horses, of all horses. She is an outstanding athlete and a true role model.

Way to go Andrea. There are so many beautiful race horses that do not have the future that you provide. We need more folks in the horse community to follow Andrea. Good luck in your journey to the Olympics. You would do our country proud.

I love the fact that this young lady already is helping animals and understands that the horses can be re-trained for other things.

Wishing her luck in the future games.

I think it is wonderful when young people have such a goal! I wish her much luck in the Olympics! Bring home the gold!

How great to hear something other than horse racing. I hope she does well in the Olympics. She obviously cares so much for horses, and I think it's wonderful that she's retraining other horses for another life.

Horses are such social creatures, it's good these will have something to stimulate their minds and bodies as they grow older. Folks are abandoning horses in this economy. As fuel costs go higher, they may be sorry they did that. Perhaps each new road that is built should be required to have bike and horse trails built along with it.

Very cool. Glad to hear that she is working with the racers. Good luck!

I think it is great that this lady is helping place these race horses in good homes. Horses are such giving creatures and deserve more respect than just simply racing them and disgarding them.

I hope this young woman is able to continue her journey, and continues to rescue the Thoroughbreds. Many of my 4-H kids received Thoroughbreds that I rescued from the track. They made wonderful hunter/jumpers, and dressage mounts! Way to go young lady! Kudos for your efforts!

I am glad this young gal has the option to do this kind of thing. It takes alot of money to raise horses & train them. I hope she does get the chance to compete at the level she wants to. She seems to really appreciate the relationship between animals & humans. It is true what she said about trusting & team effort. Keep up the good work w/ horses.

I really appreciate this young lady and her efforts, but the reporting by ZooToo continues to mystify. What, exactly, does this mean? "...it’s a goal that most athletes attain for ... " Athletes may strive or aim for goals, but no one "attains" for something! To attain is to reach. I have a hard time believing that Andrea would have said this in the way/wording with which it was reported.

It is in quotation marks, indicating it is a direct quote from Andrea. Perhaps it is merely a slip of the tongue [in which case the word "attain" should have been followed by "(sic)"], or possibly a typing or reporter hearing error. Even if it is somewhat flawed, the rest of the article is written well enough to overlook this. (Gee whiz, is "horse-y-ing" even a word??? What a bold writer!)

It can be so easy to forget that the horses that run in races don't often have much of a future when their track days are over. Stories like this remind us that can be offered a a future.

If Andrea's achievements to date are an accurate reflection of her lifetime potential, her horsing around is going to turn around many horses and guide them toward a wholesome life. Andrea has already earned a medal without going to the Olympics.
