Two Breeds Top Obama Family Puppy Search

Browse News

While their father handles a deepening recession, cabinet appointments and a crisis in the Middle East, the Obama girls clearly have another thing on their mind: a new puppy, which the President-elect yesterday said the family is close to selecting.

WASHINGTON -- The Obama family has come to town, and will finally soon be joined by a much anticipated addition to the clan: a puppy, which President-elect Obama promised his two young daughters last year.

Like their father, Malia, 10, and Sasha, seven, seem to know what they want -- and how to get it.

"They seem to have narrowed it down to a labradoodle or a Portuguese Water hound [Sic]," Obama told ABC's George Stephanopoulos on ABC News' "This Week" yesterday.

"We're now going to start looking at shelters to see when one of those dogs might come up."

The hunt for a perfect White House pooch is hopefully almost over, Obama said, after a long and highly publicized journey.

"We're closing in on it. This has been tougher than finding a commerce secretary," he joked, referring to his selection of Bill Richardson for the position. The New Mexico Governor later withdrew his nomination, after speculation of his engagement in "play-to-pay" politics rose to the surface.

Both of the Obama girls' potential breed selections, Labradoodles -- a hybrid of a poodle and a Labrador retriever -- and the Portuguese Water Dog are considered hypoallergenic, a requirement for Malia, who suffers from allergies.

The designer labradoodle, which is not an accepted breed by the American Kennel Club, began to be bred in the mid 1980s. The Portuguese Water Dog, on the other hand, dates back to the 1200s, when it worked on boats with Portuguese fishermen.

Perhaps the Obama girls took a tip from Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy, whose Portuguese Water Dogs, Splash and Sunny, frequently accompany him on the Senate floor.

The Obama family have spoken of their intent to adopt from a shelter or rescue group, but at the same time, as Obama noted in his first press conference following the election, "a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me."

Many animal advocates and Obama supporters alike have closely followed the Obama's search for a dog, a point of discussion that has repeatedly come up in press conferences and interviews.

Obama formally announced his promise on election night to his daughters, telling them, "I love you both so much, and you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House."

Yet, the family has been discussing the plan for more than a year, with interviews dating back to before Obama was even formally selected as the Democratic presidential nominee.

Regardless of the First Dog's breed, or point of origin, one thing is for sure: it will have some company in Washington, D.C., joined by Vice President-elect Joe Biden's new puppy, German Shepherd his grandchildren named "Champ."

Biden had also said that he will adopt another dog from a shelter, providing Champ a playmate. The move may have also acted as a conciliatory bone to the animal activist community, which criticized his decision to not adopt a rescue dog to begin with.

I'm sure there is a shelter out there that has one of these breeds in their kennels! If they can't find one at a shelter, I hope they at least go to a rescue group. It's good that they have thought long and hard about it and done their research!

Every shelter in the country will be combing their runs looking for a labradoodle that will fit the bill. Plus the kids will want a puppy.

Hopefully they find the dog they are looking for. Those breeds might be a little hard to find though, but good luck to them.

Someone mentioned this story at work and the first thing one of my coworkers said is that they doubt they will find either of these two breeds at a shelter, unless they are adult giveaways or have a behavior problems, due to the popularity of both. We weren't sure if there are rescues for these two breeds, especially the labradoodle which is hard to find unless you get it from a breeder.

How about writing a journal about the rescue? It would be fascinating to know about where the animals come from, reason for the give ups, how a placement is made.

I'M CONFUSED. IN THE BEGINNING I READ THAT THE OBAMA FAMILY WAS GOING TO SAVE A DOG FROM THE SHELTER BUT THIS MORNING I HEAR THEY ARE GETTING A DOG FROM BREEDER. WHICH IS IT? PORTIE OR DOODLE?

That is nice that they are choosing from a shelter and hopefully that brings up adoptions there from all the publicity. But what gets me is that I hear more on Obamas family choosing a puppy then actually what is really important about him fixing the economy like he said he will.

I think these special interest stories always seem to creep up in the news. We recently canceled one of our long term newpaper subscriptions due to exactly that. Stories without any real importance.

Spose we'll have to read ten more articles on their choice, but the good news for the lucky shelter is that the publicity will most certainly garner attention, and hopefully result in a rise in adoptions for them. These articles make easy reading and are much more palpable than the abuse ones. So I don't care how many they print!!

Allergies are a huge issue for people. We had a client in the other day with his dog - a poodle. He was sitting in the office during the consult for half an hour and had a huge allergy attack where he was having trouble breathing. It was simply from the dander of other dogs that were there previously. This is serious and I hope people realize it.

Please someone find one of these in Jersey City. While it is never good to wish for a pet to find it's way to the shelter, if a labradoodle showed up & Obama adopted at LHS, well... I think that would be a great thing for LHS.

Of course I hope that the Obama's will adopt a rescued dog. But where ever it comes from, I hope that they give it the love, care and devotion that it deserves. This doesn't need to be any type of media play or public relations stunt. The dog that they choose deserves a lifetime committment from this family, just like any other family that makes a decision to adopt a pet.

Puppys can sure be lots of work and need lots of attention. Hope they are ready for one. I would think an older dog at a shelter that would fit in with their family might be a good choice too.

I hope someone told the Obamas that all those -doodle breeds are not necessarily hypoallergenic. They may or may not inherit the gene from the poodle that causes the decreased shedding.

labradoodle? really? did not know labradoodles were hypoallergenic, but thinking about it, with the poodle mix, they very well could be fine. I came across an OK site that provides some background info:

I still think they'd be better off going through a rescue than a shelter. A rescue would better know which dog would be best for the one girl's allergies.

Good for the Obamas--the number one thing is making sure their daughter is ok, but second on the list is adopting a shelter dog. I kind of feel sorry for them--no matter what they end up with, someone will criticize their choice. Let's all hope the perfect pup finds THEM.

Well it does sound like Obama intends on getting a shelter dog. And the same for Biden too after he got that German Shepherd. So I hope they can find these two "breeds" of dogs at the shelter and they don't go and buy one somewhere.

There's no doubt in my mind that they will get a shelter dog. I just don't understand why everyone is making such a big deal about them wanting a specific breed. It's for a logical reason being that they need a hypo-allergetic dog for their child. I think that is shows they are serious and have taken the time to make a decision and have really thought it out.
