Two Breeds Top Obama Family Puppy Search

Browse News

While their father handles a deepening recession, cabinet appointments and a crisis in the Middle East, the Obama girls clearly have another thing on their mind: a new puppy, which the President-elect yesterday said the family is close to selecting.

WASHINGTON -- The Obama family has come to town, and will finally soon be joined by a much anticipated addition to the clan: a puppy, which President-elect Obama promised his two young daughters last year.

Like their father, Malia, 10, and Sasha, seven, seem to know what they want -- and how to get it.

"They seem to have narrowed it down to a labradoodle or a Portuguese Water hound [Sic]," Obama told ABC's George Stephanopoulos on ABC News' "This Week" yesterday.

"We're now going to start looking at shelters to see when one of those dogs might come up."

The hunt for a perfect White House pooch is hopefully almost over, Obama said, after a long and highly publicized journey.

"We're closing in on it. This has been tougher than finding a commerce secretary," he joked, referring to his selection of Bill Richardson for the position. The New Mexico Governor later withdrew his nomination, after speculation of his engagement in "play-to-pay" politics rose to the surface.

Both of the Obama girls' potential breed selections, Labradoodles -- a hybrid of a poodle and a Labrador retriever -- and the Portuguese Water Dog are considered hypoallergenic, a requirement for Malia, who suffers from allergies.

The designer labradoodle, which is not an accepted breed by the American Kennel Club, began to be bred in the mid 1980s. The Portuguese Water Dog, on the other hand, dates back to the 1200s, when it worked on boats with Portuguese fishermen.

Perhaps the Obama girls took a tip from Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy, whose Portuguese Water Dogs, Splash and Sunny, frequently accompany him on the Senate floor.

The Obama family have spoken of their intent to adopt from a shelter or rescue group, but at the same time, as Obama noted in his first press conference following the election, "a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me."

Many animal advocates and Obama supporters alike have closely followed the Obama's search for a dog, a point of discussion that has repeatedly come up in press conferences and interviews.

Obama formally announced his promise on election night to his daughters, telling them, "I love you both so much, and you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House."

Yet, the family has been discussing the plan for more than a year, with interviews dating back to before Obama was even formally selected as the Democratic presidential nominee.

Regardless of the First Dog's breed, or point of origin, one thing is for sure: it will have some company in Washington, D.C., joined by Vice President-elect Joe Biden's new puppy, German Shepherd his grandchildren named "Champ."

Biden had also said that he will adopt another dog from a shelter, providing Champ a playmate. The move may have also acted as a conciliatory bone to the animal activist community, which criticized his decision to not adopt a rescue dog to begin with.

BORING NEWS. They are not pet people or they would have already had one... two... three... or more.

I think they're being very responsible by not jumping at the first dog they see and doing their homework. Many people get pets because they're cute and then they don't fit with the family or have terrible temperments and they give them back or abandon them.

I truly hope the first family sets an example for the rest of the nation and adopts from a shelter. Like it or not, they are now in the limelight, and what they do or don't do becomes news.

I hope they can get a nice dog from a shelter in the area. The two breeds they have picked will be fine for the girl with the allergies.

I don't care what kind of dog it is, but it would be WONDERFUL if it's from a shelter or rescue group. And really, this isn't politics to me--it's about 2 little girls getting their first puppy, so even if they choose a breeder, I'm not going to knock that. It's about finding the right dog for the right situation.

i love that he is getting a dog for his girls.i don't care what they get as long as their happy. on a personal note i do wish they would look at resuce or shelters for their dog or puppy. they can get great pets from there that are just as good as from a breeder.

I wish they hadn't thrown out the idea of Bichon Frise. Not that they are more likely to find one in a shelter than the 2 main options, but they are just such wonderful dogs! I love that they are including the country on the discussion period. It makes them seem so much more real and down-to-earth. Good luck on the search, Obama family!

Saw this on the news, someone offered them a 12 week old port. water hound. They probably won't take it for political reasons, but I think people should just let them choose in peace. Since they specifically need a hypo-allergenic puppy I guess I'm not going to criticize them if they end up having to go to a reputable breeder. The simple fact that they are searching shelters should be benefical to the shelters. It'll be unfortunate if they can't find one in a shelter but his daughter's allergies come first. Not to mention it's his daughter's puppy and it's obviously primarily their choice which one they want to get.

I agree about searching the shelters. If Obama or his wife do it themselves they will see the need for shelter support and spay/neuter programs.

To me the Obama`s are not looking for a shelter dog, they are looking for a pure-bred which in my experience you don`t find in a shelter very rarely. Why not just go to a shelter and spend time with the animals there and let the dog choose them. AND THEY WILL.

Our shelter has had more Purebred dogs in house more often than not, We have gotten cocker spaniels, jack russells, St. Bernards, Bernise Mountain Dog, Doberman, Poodle, bichon, the list is endless. All I care about is that the Obamas get a dog that is suitable for thier lifestyle.

Another misconception, although it may be true in your area. I know of a lot of shelters that have massive amounts of purebreeds and papered dogs coming through their doors. It's sad all around. When someone doesn't even want a purebreed that's hard on the mixed breeds as well.

what do you suppose the chances of a laberdoodle being in a shelter are? I've not yet searched rescue groups but they have not been being bred for long... I'm not thinking they are going to support either kind of organization...

Biden could have gotten a shelter dog in the first place..this is his way to deflect some of the heat he received when he went to a breeder for Champ...

they should get an Australian Shepherd: the breed is originated in America, and it is a mixture of many breeds coming from different countries. Just like Obama himself and so many other people in the USA. :)

I would guess that any shelter that has one of these 2 kinds of dogs will probably get a hold of the Obama's. I had always heard that Labradoodles tend to be a hyper dog. I myself like the mellow type. Good Luck to them!

Finding a puppy of these breeds in a shelter will be hard. Usually it is adult dogs in shelters. So hoping all the shelters and rescues are keeping a look out to help, otherwise, they might go to a breeder.

labradoodles like so many dogs end up in shelters. the breeders think they're great for profit, then if they don't get purchased some breeders just ditch them somewhere. i haven't heard of any portuguese water dogs coming through our area pounds, but labs of all mixes do.

I really don't think it will be hard for them to find a labradoodle at a shelter. while I am not a big fan of these "designer" breeds I have heard the labradoodle is a good mix. There are dogs of every variety in shelters and plenty of purebreds are turned in regularly. Now with the mortgage crisis more and more of them are showing up.
