Two Breeds Top Obama Family Puppy Search

Browse News

While their father handles a deepening recession, cabinet appointments and a crisis in the Middle East, the Obama girls clearly have another thing on their mind: a new puppy, which the President-elect yesterday said the family is close to selecting.

WASHINGTON -- The Obama family has come to town, and will finally soon be joined by a much anticipated addition to the clan: a puppy, which President-elect Obama promised his two young daughters last year.

Like their father, Malia, 10, and Sasha, seven, seem to know what they want -- and how to get it.

"They seem to have narrowed it down to a labradoodle or a Portuguese Water hound [Sic]," Obama told ABC's George Stephanopoulos on ABC News' "This Week" yesterday.

"We're now going to start looking at shelters to see when one of those dogs might come up."

The hunt for a perfect White House pooch is hopefully almost over, Obama said, after a long and highly publicized journey.

"We're closing in on it. This has been tougher than finding a commerce secretary," he joked, referring to his selection of Bill Richardson for the position. The New Mexico Governor later withdrew his nomination, after speculation of his engagement in "play-to-pay" politics rose to the surface.

Both of the Obama girls' potential breed selections, Labradoodles -- a hybrid of a poodle and a Labrador retriever -- and the Portuguese Water Dog are considered hypoallergenic, a requirement for Malia, who suffers from allergies.

The designer labradoodle, which is not an accepted breed by the American Kennel Club, began to be bred in the mid 1980s. The Portuguese Water Dog, on the other hand, dates back to the 1200s, when it worked on boats with Portuguese fishermen.

Perhaps the Obama girls took a tip from Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy, whose Portuguese Water Dogs, Splash and Sunny, frequently accompany him on the Senate floor.

The Obama family have spoken of their intent to adopt from a shelter or rescue group, but at the same time, as Obama noted in his first press conference following the election, "a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me."

Many animal advocates and Obama supporters alike have closely followed the Obama's search for a dog, a point of discussion that has repeatedly come up in press conferences and interviews.

Obama formally announced his promise on election night to his daughters, telling them, "I love you both so much, and you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House."

Yet, the family has been discussing the plan for more than a year, with interviews dating back to before Obama was even formally selected as the Democratic presidential nominee.

Regardless of the First Dog's breed, or point of origin, one thing is for sure: it will have some company in Washington, D.C., joined by Vice President-elect Joe Biden's new puppy, German Shepherd his grandchildren named "Champ."

Biden had also said that he will adopt another dog from a shelter, providing Champ a playmate. The move may have also acted as a conciliatory bone to the animal activist community, which criticized his decision to not adopt a rescue dog to begin with.

I wish the public would have had more input on the people he is appointing into his office rather than the type of dog they are getting. If it takes this long to figure out which kind of pet the family wants, I hate to see what he does when he needs to make a quick national decision.

Thank you Nicole! Bingo! We're talking about what kind of dog this family should get. I couldn't care less. Let them get what they want and drop the topic and move on to more important things.

I would hope they keep their options open when looking for dogs at shelters. It's tough when you go in focus on a particular breed.

I am impressed with President Obama's desire to find a very hard to find dog at a shelter. I'm sure people would understand if they adopted from a reputable breeder, because, of their daughters health concerns.

I've transported several labradoodles to rescue groups. They are nice dogs and ultimately every family has to pick a dog that fits the lifestyle of that family. Best wishes to the new first dogs!

Honestly, I do not really understand why this is the big "new story" topping headlines and receiving segments on news programs. Ok, he's gonna get his children a dog, the same thing many of us do all the time and other presidents have done as well. Sure it's cute and all but honestly isn't this just a bit much? Geez... just leave them to their choice, whatever it is and lets all go "awww, how sweet" and move on.

I feel sorry for the Obama's having to pick a 'politically correct' puppy. I think everyone should just let them pick the dog they want and from where they want. Sure it's nice to rescue a dog, but if they want to pick a purebred from a good breeder I think they should have the right to choose without being criticized. They will not be able to please everyone on this issue.

I hope they choose the PWD over the Labradoodle. Too many people are considering the Labradoodle as a breed, when in fact they are mixes. This prevents true mixes from being adopted because people want a "purebred" Labaradoodle! But, then again, the PWD is a purebred, too. Well, maybe they WILL find a poodle or PWD mix in a shelter??? Who knows? It will be one lucky dog, regardless!!!

I was secretly hoping for a Kerry Blue Terrier, but I'm voting for the PWD! I hope they keep in mind that with breeds like the PWD's, breeders take in rescues as well! (Any reputable breeder will take back its dog at any age for whatever reason if you decide you can no longer care for it)

labrapoodles are adorable and i am so happy that they are thinking about adopting even though their daughter is allergic. most would say that all dogs would cause the allergy but no the obamas researched it and disscovered that their are hypo allergetic dogs. I just hope it isnt simply a publicity stunt.

his daughter is extremely allergic to dogs. while a shelter animals would always be preferable, it is sometimes better to get a dog you know won't make you sick so there's no worry of that animal ending up in a shelter later on! i do hope he finds one of the hypoallergenic dogs in a shelter though. i bet a lot of shelters will be keeping their eyes out for one!

Good choice on the portugese water dog! How exciting. I am excited for Biden's new German Shepherd pup as well, even if he is not from a shelter. Many dogs are bred from good lines out there. He has every right to choose a dog from a responsible breeder, and should not be judged by others for this.

Any breed is a good choice. There's no such thing as a 'poor choice' when it comes to dogs. They all give tons of love, regardless of how 'smart' or how many health problems they may be prone to. I hope for Malia's sake, they find one that she can heap love onto, without it affecting her health. But most of all, I hope they do adopt from a shelter. So many people follow the lead of those who are in the spotlight, copying Hollywood celebrities who pay thousands for 'designer' dogs to match their designer purses. If our President adopts from a shelter, maybe more people will follow his lead and reverse that trend. Maybe people will see that pet ownership is about love, and not about status.

Look a poodle mix rescue! If I can find it, surely they can too! I hate to over dramatize things, but a little part of my heart will die if the President buys a dog from a breeder. I mean - I have nothing against responsible breeders, but with dogs dying in shelters, and the leader of the free world needing a dog, he should save one, and set a good example for the country. And shouldn't somebody tell them that there are no actual hypoallergenic dogs?

I really hope they choose to adopt a dog, instead of going to a breeder. They seem to have a very narrowed down breed picked out, and I hope that doesn't hinder them picking out a great dog regardless. Good luck to the Obamas.

I think the Obama forces should set up an e-mail site that shelters having the type animals they are searching for could identify them. That way it would be easy to find a shelter animal for them.
