Two Breeds Top Obama Family Puppy Search

Browse News

While their father handles a deepening recession, cabinet appointments and a crisis in the Middle East, the Obama girls clearly have another thing on their mind: a new puppy, which the President-elect yesterday said the family is close to selecting.

WASHINGTON -- The Obama family has come to town, and will finally soon be joined by a much anticipated addition to the clan: a puppy, which President-elect Obama promised his two young daughters last year.

Like their father, Malia, 10, and Sasha, seven, seem to know what they want -- and how to get it.

"They seem to have narrowed it down to a labradoodle or a Portuguese Water hound [Sic]," Obama told ABC's George Stephanopoulos on ABC News' "This Week" yesterday.

"We're now going to start looking at shelters to see when one of those dogs might come up."

The hunt for a perfect White House pooch is hopefully almost over, Obama said, after a long and highly publicized journey.

"We're closing in on it. This has been tougher than finding a commerce secretary," he joked, referring to his selection of Bill Richardson for the position. The New Mexico Governor later withdrew his nomination, after speculation of his engagement in "play-to-pay" politics rose to the surface.

Both of the Obama girls' potential breed selections, Labradoodles -- a hybrid of a poodle and a Labrador retriever -- and the Portuguese Water Dog are considered hypoallergenic, a requirement for Malia, who suffers from allergies.

The designer labradoodle, which is not an accepted breed by the American Kennel Club, began to be bred in the mid 1980s. The Portuguese Water Dog, on the other hand, dates back to the 1200s, when it worked on boats with Portuguese fishermen.

Perhaps the Obama girls took a tip from Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy, whose Portuguese Water Dogs, Splash and Sunny, frequently accompany him on the Senate floor.

The Obama family have spoken of their intent to adopt from a shelter or rescue group, but at the same time, as Obama noted in his first press conference following the election, "a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me."

Many animal advocates and Obama supporters alike have closely followed the Obama's search for a dog, a point of discussion that has repeatedly come up in press conferences and interviews.

Obama formally announced his promise on election night to his daughters, telling them, "I love you both so much, and you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House."

Yet, the family has been discussing the plan for more than a year, with interviews dating back to before Obama was even formally selected as the Democratic presidential nominee.

Regardless of the First Dog's breed, or point of origin, one thing is for sure: it will have some company in Washington, D.C., joined by Vice President-elect Joe Biden's new puppy, German Shepherd his grandchildren named "Champ."

Biden had also said that he will adopt another dog from a shelter, providing Champ a playmate. The move may have also acted as a conciliatory bone to the animal activist community, which criticized his decision to not adopt a rescue dog to begin with.

What happened to get one that didn't bother their allergies? Someone just needs to tell him to go on PetFinder and put in the info and find where it's located.

I haven't been following this story. I just read it today, and I got a little worried. My respect almost was lost until I read he wanted to adopt. Respect saved!!!! I swear if he got a puppymill baby or breeder baby I would've been so pissed.

As there is no scientific data to prove any dog or cat is hypoallergenic, the recommended list of dogs/cats for those with allergies that want to adopt a pet is based upon details about the animal that would suggest a lower level of potential allergens such as fur, dander and saliva. This does not mean that all allergy sufferers would do well with all or any of the “hypoallergenic breeds”. If a patient has mild allergies, any pet would do as long as the pet is brushed and bathed regularly and all carpeting, upholstery and pet’s bedding is vacuumed or washed frequently. And there are allergy medications the person can take to help alleviate any symptoms.. It is just common sense!

I agree with Nancy C. (catsfancynancy). The choice of breeds the Obama family has selected (Labradoodle and Portuguese Water Dog) make it almost impossible to guarantee finding such a dog in a shelter or through a rescue. I found thirty-six (36) dog breeds that are considered hypoallergenic and recognized immediately several breeds as types that are usually in need of rescue. Top on the list is the Greyhound! There are thousands of greyhounds in rescue groups all over the country in desperate need of a good home!

Some more common breeds that made the “hypoallergenic pet list” that can be found in shelters are terriers such as the Cairn, Fox (Wire haired), Scottish, Silky, Yorkshire, West Highland and Wheaton. Others are the Irish Water Spaniel, Bichon Frisé and Poodle. Mixed breeds of this nature can also be safe for individuals with allergies, as long as the dog possesses the characteristics of the allergy safe breed (ie., non-shedding, no dander).

Granted I understand temperment, activity level, personality and sometimes age and looks play a role in adopting a pet, but still there are well over thirty different breed options the Obamas have in making that decision. The only way to tell if the dog will be a good match is to meet and get to know him/her. Why not have the kids visit some local shelters, tell the volunteers that they have allergies and need a dog that won’t aggravate their problem and just get in there and meet the dogs! The one (or two) the kids fall in love with and doesn’t send them into a frenzy of sneezes should be the one (or two) to move into the White House! Simple as that!

Also if they adopt from a local shelter, it would give that shelter a huge publicity boost and help raise the level of awareness for shelter adoptions. And don’t forget to spay/neuter!!!

I do not like politicians. I just see this situation as more bureaucratic puppy-poo! Just do it Obama or get off the wee-wee pad already!

Hopefully the girls' will be the one's caring for their pet of choice. As my children found out it takes a lot of responsibily and committment from all family members. It only becomes "your" pet if you are the one to care for your pet.

I just have two wishes that I hope come true regarding this adoption, the first being that the dog is selected from a shelter and second that the adopters realize that taking an animal into their family is a earnest commitment for the life of pet.

I agree with those of you who posit, "What is taking so long to get a pup already?" Personally it doesn't make any difference to me what kind of dog the first family gets. Why should it?

I can't believe its taking so long. Geez! Imagine how long it'll take for him to decide on other topics! Just adopt already! There are so many adoptable non shedding dogs in shelters. I'm sure they are being petitioned regularly.

I understand wanting a puppy from a breeder to ensure Malia's allergies won't be irritated. While both of my dogs have been rescues, getting a dog from a breeder is not completely evil. Although some people certainly make it seem that way. You just have to have the right reasons.

Those breeds make sense since allergies are an issue. Obama doesn't seem to know that there are purebreds available through rescues. In my mind a rescue and a shelter dog are pretty much the same. The bottom line is that a rescue is getting a second chance.

It's good to know that they're going to try to get a dog from a shelter. Great example for everyone. Now the wait to see what they choose. I'm fairly familiar with both types of dogs but have never had either one. I have a mutt, a Walker Hound that isn't listed in the listing you choose from when you choose your breed of dog, a mini weiner dog and a very vocal Basset Hound.

I hope they don't get discouraged and purchase from a breeder! Surely they can find a match from a shelter! Could you imagine what it would be like to be able to say-yea-the president adopted from my shelter! Hopefully he could give a hunk of change to help support the shelter that they get their dog from.

I don't mind that the Obamas would like a particular breed, but I do hope that they acquire one from a rescue group rather than going to a breeder. That would set a great example for the country.

I have mixed emotions on this one. On the down side I think the country is in enough trouble that other news should take precedence over this. HOWEVER, I am all for any opportunity to promote shelter adoptions. I do hope they find their new friend at a shelter. At least they say they are looking - that in itself is great publicity for our cause.
