Two Breeds Top Obama Family Puppy Search

Browse News

While their father handles a deepening recession, cabinet appointments and a crisis in the Middle East, the Obama girls clearly have another thing on their mind: a new puppy, which the President-elect yesterday said the family is close to selecting.

WASHINGTON -- The Obama family has come to town, and will finally soon be joined by a much anticipated addition to the clan: a puppy, which President-elect Obama promised his two young daughters last year.

Like their father, Malia, 10, and Sasha, seven, seem to know what they want -- and how to get it.

"They seem to have narrowed it down to a labradoodle or a Portuguese Water hound [Sic]," Obama told ABC's George Stephanopoulos on ABC News' "This Week" yesterday.

"We're now going to start looking at shelters to see when one of those dogs might come up."

The hunt for a perfect White House pooch is hopefully almost over, Obama said, after a long and highly publicized journey.

"We're closing in on it. This has been tougher than finding a commerce secretary," he joked, referring to his selection of Bill Richardson for the position. The New Mexico Governor later withdrew his nomination, after speculation of his engagement in "play-to-pay" politics rose to the surface.

Both of the Obama girls' potential breed selections, Labradoodles -- a hybrid of a poodle and a Labrador retriever -- and the Portuguese Water Dog are considered hypoallergenic, a requirement for Malia, who suffers from allergies.

The designer labradoodle, which is not an accepted breed by the American Kennel Club, began to be bred in the mid 1980s. The Portuguese Water Dog, on the other hand, dates back to the 1200s, when it worked on boats with Portuguese fishermen.

Perhaps the Obama girls took a tip from Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy, whose Portuguese Water Dogs, Splash and Sunny, frequently accompany him on the Senate floor.

The Obama family have spoken of their intent to adopt from a shelter or rescue group, but at the same time, as Obama noted in his first press conference following the election, "a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me."

Many animal advocates and Obama supporters alike have closely followed the Obama's search for a dog, a point of discussion that has repeatedly come up in press conferences and interviews.

Obama formally announced his promise on election night to his daughters, telling them, "I love you both so much, and you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House."

Yet, the family has been discussing the plan for more than a year, with interviews dating back to before Obama was even formally selected as the Democratic presidential nominee.

Regardless of the First Dog's breed, or point of origin, one thing is for sure: it will have some company in Washington, D.C., joined by Vice President-elect Joe Biden's new puppy, German Shepherd his grandchildren named "Champ."

Biden had also said that he will adopt another dog from a shelter, providing Champ a playmate. The move may have also acted as a conciliatory bone to the animal activist community, which criticized his decision to not adopt a rescue dog to begin with.

There are many purebred dogs and cats that make it to the shelters. With this announcement, I am sure that the shelters and the breeders are emailing like mad to get their dog/dogs adopted. I believe that there is a perfect dog in a shelter just waiting to have a home at the Obama's.

Very true. When I was looking for a particular dog I got on shelters' waiting lists within 75 miles & petfinder's who emailed me when any turned up, & there's other rescues I can't recall at the moment that do the same. But I'm just a common person, the shelters will probably be contacting the Obama's, don't you imagine.

I'm hoping they don't pick a doodle.Have not met one doodle that wasn't a bit off center.

I think whichever breed they come up with that is allergy free comes from a SHELTER.
Save a dog....bring an underdog to the White House! That is what America wants!

Since they have never had pets before this seems just political. Hope their daughters don't get "tired" of their new toys.

I consider it QUITE patriotic to improve the quality of my community. Part of that is to help people understand the issues surrounding RESPONSIBLE pet ownership. If you think this story doesn't impact that, you are missing the forest for the trees. If there is an issue that is under-recognized for it's impact on a local community it is pet overpopulation. No other social issue is the 'responsibility' of the taxpayer alone. If someone neglects their children or even their yard, they can get lots of attention from various law enforcement agencies. If someone let's their pets routinely reproduce, they can just dump the offspring on the local shelter and let the taxpayer shoulder the expense of caring for, killing and disposing of those animals without even paying a fine in many areas. I think a valid argument could be made that such an attitude (let someone else deal with the mess) is a big part of what is wrong.

It's also a bit of a stretch to presume that since people take some interest in this story that they are 'un-patriotic'. There is alot more to a person's life and their day than the time they spend on zootoo reading pet related articles and commenting.

I am sure I would have jumped into that fray of helping anyone who I felt was trying to help educate.. perhaps you might have asked how long I'd been a member of zootoo prior to noting that I didn't defend this unnamed person. My profile was created within the last 72 hours.

I am far from unpatriotic. Instead I see that this issue will go a LONG way in shaping the way people perceive shelters and the animal overpopulation problem as a whole. In fact, look at the replies here... all the people saying the Obamas SHOULD pick the Labradoodle because it is a designer breed, others saying they should get it because it will be easier to find in a shelter because it is a mix... both attitudes show a profound misunderstanding of the implication of the Labradoodle and a possible choice of it by the Obamas.

I can't do too much to influence healthcare and foreign policy - I am politically active and doing what I can there - but I can use this topic to help capture people's interest long enough to educate them. I'd think that is what you'd want to do rather than disparaging them for their interest.

Let us all pray that the Obamas do not opt for the Labradoodle.. it's already a mix that is bred exclusively by backyard breeders and puppy mills/farms. For the Obama's to opt for one, even if from a rescue will only cause the puppy mills to generate more to take on the increased demand from average Americans. I fear the same would be true with PWD; but in general that breed has been exceptional in managing and controlling their breeding stock and keeping it in the hands of highly responsible folks.

It's a dilemma. Of course, the Obamas are in a great position to help everyone in this country get better educated about responsible pet ownership and giving the topic a far higher profile. On the downside, just the fact that they are opting for a 'fad' cross-breed which is essentially a mix but marketed as something unique or a purebred means that they are missing the point. Just as the 'labradoodle' is a hypoallergenic dog (in theory) proves that there are PLENTY of mixed breed dogs that are as well. I would much rather that was the direction they were looking in rather than perpetuating that marketing myth of irresponsible breeders.

I would have hoped that their search was narrowed to simply "a lovable dog from a reputable shelter". I just hate the idea of breeders.

this is awsome! I have been following the story on the news but, to finally have it narrowed down is great! Now to hopefully find one in a shelter would be an added plus. I hope Binden does adopt from the shelter a friend for his Champ. I know of many people who don't do the shelter thing but, now do as there is so many more dogs being put out of the family due to money issue's so there is more to choose from which is sad but, also nice to see people adopting more!! Now who is going to be in charge of potty training all these pups??

I wish everyone would take their time and do their homework like this when selecting a pet that may be in your family a decade or more. Many folks don't know that the shelters house many purebreds. That's where I got my pomeranian last year. She's the best!

I hope that the general public follows our new president and look to shelters and rescue groups first for a dog. Although he is right that there are mostly "mutts" at shelters I know from working there that many full blooded animals do end up there and with so many breed specific resuce groups now i'm sure that they will find their perfect pet this way!

I was just looking on pet finder and there are lots of poodle mixes that come through shelters apparantly. At least the Obama's are researching dog breeds, choosing the right dog, and making it a family decision. People who impuslively buy puppies at a puppy store set bad examples. They are setting a good exampe for dog ownership!!

I think so too. No one should bring a dog home just because it has a cute face. People should do their research before bringing an animal home. That way it doesn't end up at a shelter when they decide it doesn't fit with their lifestyle.

clearly mixes can be hypoallergenic... as you said 'labradoodle mix thing' - it is hypoallergenic so mixes are indeed capable of it. Being hypoallergenic has alot to do with coat and how the dander is trapped against the skin and/or regularly grooming (you can be allergic to the hair too but the dander is the more common culprit). In fact, many terriers are hypoallergenic too (not just the curly coated breeds). Wiry coats have the same general effect as curly. So when seeking a hypoallergenic dog it typically comes down to coat type (not breed specifically) and the specific allergen that the person is sensitive to.

Labradoodles are a mixed breed and they should be showing up in shelters soon. As to PWD, they are an uncommon breed to begin with so no wonder they are not usually in shelters.

Labradoodles have been showing up in shelters for over 20 years. As you said, they are a mixed breed. Also purebreds make up about 30% of the dogs that show up in shelters (where do you think rescues typically 'find' the dogs they help?).

As to PWD in rescue/shelters... I am sure it happens. Irish Water Spaniels are FAR less common and even they show up in shelters occasionally. The real challenge is that often the dogs of 'popular' breeds that show up in rescue are older and/or have health or serious behavior problems. Many of these types of issues could be addressed prior to placing them with the White House family.

I know lots of people are tired of this topic - but there hasn't been a story in my lifetime that has potentially helped or hindered animal welfare as much as this one if only because of the national (or international) attention it is receiving. PLEASE everyone use this as an opportunity to help encourage education toward responsible pet ownership.
