Two Breeds Top Obama Family Puppy Search

Browse News

While their father handles a deepening recession, cabinet appointments and a crisis in the Middle East, the Obama girls clearly have another thing on their mind: a new puppy, which the President-elect yesterday said the family is close to selecting.

WASHINGTON -- The Obama family has come to town, and will finally soon be joined by a much anticipated addition to the clan: a puppy, which President-elect Obama promised his two young daughters last year.

Like their father, Malia, 10, and Sasha, seven, seem to know what they want -- and how to get it.

"They seem to have narrowed it down to a labradoodle or a Portuguese Water hound [Sic]," Obama told ABC's George Stephanopoulos on ABC News' "This Week" yesterday.

"We're now going to start looking at shelters to see when one of those dogs might come up."

The hunt for a perfect White House pooch is hopefully almost over, Obama said, after a long and highly publicized journey.

"We're closing in on it. This has been tougher than finding a commerce secretary," he joked, referring to his selection of Bill Richardson for the position. The New Mexico Governor later withdrew his nomination, after speculation of his engagement in "play-to-pay" politics rose to the surface.

Both of the Obama girls' potential breed selections, Labradoodles -- a hybrid of a poodle and a Labrador retriever -- and the Portuguese Water Dog are considered hypoallergenic, a requirement for Malia, who suffers from allergies.

The designer labradoodle, which is not an accepted breed by the American Kennel Club, began to be bred in the mid 1980s. The Portuguese Water Dog, on the other hand, dates back to the 1200s, when it worked on boats with Portuguese fishermen.

Perhaps the Obama girls took a tip from Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy, whose Portuguese Water Dogs, Splash and Sunny, frequently accompany him on the Senate floor.

The Obama family have spoken of their intent to adopt from a shelter or rescue group, but at the same time, as Obama noted in his first press conference following the election, "a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me."

Many animal advocates and Obama supporters alike have closely followed the Obama's search for a dog, a point of discussion that has repeatedly come up in press conferences and interviews.

Obama formally announced his promise on election night to his daughters, telling them, "I love you both so much, and you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House."

Yet, the family has been discussing the plan for more than a year, with interviews dating back to before Obama was even formally selected as the Democratic presidential nominee.

Regardless of the First Dog's breed, or point of origin, one thing is for sure: it will have some company in Washington, D.C., joined by Vice President-elect Joe Biden's new puppy, German Shepherd his grandchildren named "Champ."

Biden had also said that he will adopt another dog from a shelter, providing Champ a playmate. The move may have also acted as a conciliatory bone to the animal activist community, which criticized his decision to not adopt a rescue dog to begin with.

I hope they stick to their word and get a dog from a shelter. Possibly they will find two or more that they can adopt when they go to the shelter. Money shouldn't be an option with them

That's exciting for the Obama family! With all the stresses our president-elect faces in his new job, it will be so nice to have a dog in the family -- dogs are great stress relief and provide so much love and entertainment!

Surely there is more than two breeds they can choose from? I know they want to get settled in the White House first, which is correct, as I am sure things will be rather hectic at first and maybe they would not be able to devote the time to a new dog. I do hope they can get it from a shelter.

A labradoodle IS a mutt, so they should be able to find one in a shelter! Or at least PLEASE go to a rescue group. There are rescue groups for all breeds.

Get on with it, my gosh, how many dogs are at the Humane Society in Washington D.C. Adopt a ton of them, the house is big enough and the money should not be an issue. Please! Teach these girls something!

For heaven's sake, get a special needs dog, you're the President already and have the resources to take care of the needy. In fact, get two!

If the Obamas adopt a "mutt like me" the canine country will be in good shape, too. I'm sure all the publicity about adopting a shelter dog has taken hold and that's where the first family will find one.

why pay top dollar for a glorified mutt (labradoodle) or even a true pure bred when you can rescue a needy dog? I'm sure they could find something that was hypoallergenic in the local shelter.

Yay! My Labradoodle will be pleased to know they are considering one of her ilk! However, she is by no means nonshedding, if that is a criterion.

Hope they are also looking at Portuguese Water Dog breed-specific rescue groups.

I'm glad that even though they need to get a certain kind of dog, with the allergies and everything, that they're still looking to adopt a shelter dog instead of buying a puppy from pet store, breeder, puppy mill, etc.

I agree with the previous comment- why only those two breeds? I found my Lola (who is part pitbull) and thankfully I was open-minded enough to just love her. I wasn't looking for her breed by any means, but I guess she was looking for me.
They should just go in and check out all the dogs. It seems like when adopting, everything just falls into place.

Im glad that they are thinking about getting a shleter dog. But why is it only down to those 2 breeds? There are lots of "mutts" that are perfect dogs. They need to look past the breed and look at the dogs themselves.

I know that it does not take this long to make a decision about adopting a pet, and surely with kids, you let them look and they pick...enough said, get on with something else. please.

Because of public scrutiny I am sure Obama has a full staff looking into the ramification of any selection. Hopefully they will get one from a shelter but it may be hard to find these two particular breeds in a shelter. I just wish that the girls get a good dog that they will love and care for.

I feel that anyone who is following this story is in fact acting patriotic and although this story may be small for some, this nation needs to heal and any zootooer should agree animals can help many heal.. yes, this probably isnt the president elects' major concern at the moment, but his decision will say something to those that this matters to. I dont feel anyone should be scolded for their interest in this topic, for animal rights has never been given as much needed attention as it has been given in recent news. this will help create a nurturing society-whether it is considered to be great or small.. it was Ghandi who said "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated".

i agree that it is our duty as americans to keep abreast of the news affecting our nation (small or great). But i do want to clarify something...animal rights and animal welfare are two completely different things. Animal welfare refers to the viewpoint that it is morally acceptable for humans to use nonhuman animals for food, humane research, clothing, entertainments, pets, etc, so long as unnecessary suffering is avoided (some of which you may not agree with). This is in direct contrast with animal rights, which holds that other animals should not be used by, or regarded as the property of humans. I don't know about you, but I enjoy having pets, and wouldn't want someone to tell me that I couldn't own them and care for them as I see fit. If animal rights were enforced, for example, I wouldn't be allowed to euthanize my horse that was dying from a severe colic; I would not have the right to even ride my horses because that would be considered a form of slavery to some animal rights activists. It is time that we start to take it upon ourselves to know what we are saying and to become familiar with terms that we hear on a daily basis so that we are not tricked or confused into agreeing with something that we actually disagree with. That is also our duty as americans!

It's great that a lot of research/thought has gone into picking the right kind of dog. With so many dogs needing homes, there has got to be one that fits the criteria for them to rescue.

The Obamas have researched and thought about which breeds will fit their lifestyle and children's needs rather than just jumping on the first cute puppy someone offered them. I hope they can find the right dog for their family soon since a 10 year old and 7 year old won't be patient forever.

which is exactly why they SHOULD wait...the girls need to understand that they 1. can't always get their way 2. that good things come to those who wait 3. that there is a lot of responsibility in owning a dog. Also, the Obamas need to make sure that the girls won't become bored with having a dog once they get it.

I hope that the children enjoy whatever dog they get. It would be wise to get two dogs, that way the dogs will have playmates when left alone. Several shelters and rescue groups do have these types of dogs available, so maybe they won't get one purchased from a breeder.

I think the Obama's would be happy with a Labradoodle. I have a friend that has one and absolutely loves it. I think bringing a new type of dog to the White House would be right in stride with the "changes" we'll be seeing in the next few years.

Finding one of these two breeds at a shelter in a timely fashion could be tough enough, but we've always been more interested in how the dog or pup interacts with our family. Hopefully they'll take the time to be sure and get the "right one" of whichever breed that fits their family best.
