Two Breeds Top Obama Family Puppy Search

Browse News

While their father handles a deepening recession, cabinet appointments and a crisis in the Middle East, the Obama girls clearly have another thing on their mind: a new puppy, which the President-elect yesterday said the family is close to selecting.

WASHINGTON -- The Obama family has come to town, and will finally soon be joined by a much anticipated addition to the clan: a puppy, which President-elect Obama promised his two young daughters last year.

Like their father, Malia, 10, and Sasha, seven, seem to know what they want -- and how to get it.

"They seem to have narrowed it down to a labradoodle or a Portuguese Water hound [Sic]," Obama told ABC's George Stephanopoulos on ABC News' "This Week" yesterday.

"We're now going to start looking at shelters to see when one of those dogs might come up."

The hunt for a perfect White House pooch is hopefully almost over, Obama said, after a long and highly publicized journey.

"We're closing in on it. This has been tougher than finding a commerce secretary," he joked, referring to his selection of Bill Richardson for the position. The New Mexico Governor later withdrew his nomination, after speculation of his engagement in "play-to-pay" politics rose to the surface.

Both of the Obama girls' potential breed selections, Labradoodles -- a hybrid of a poodle and a Labrador retriever -- and the Portuguese Water Dog are considered hypoallergenic, a requirement for Malia, who suffers from allergies.

The designer labradoodle, which is not an accepted breed by the American Kennel Club, began to be bred in the mid 1980s. The Portuguese Water Dog, on the other hand, dates back to the 1200s, when it worked on boats with Portuguese fishermen.

Perhaps the Obama girls took a tip from Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy, whose Portuguese Water Dogs, Splash and Sunny, frequently accompany him on the Senate floor.

The Obama family have spoken of their intent to adopt from a shelter or rescue group, but at the same time, as Obama noted in his first press conference following the election, "a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me."

Many animal advocates and Obama supporters alike have closely followed the Obama's search for a dog, a point of discussion that has repeatedly come up in press conferences and interviews.

Obama formally announced his promise on election night to his daughters, telling them, "I love you both so much, and you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House."

Yet, the family has been discussing the plan for more than a year, with interviews dating back to before Obama was even formally selected as the Democratic presidential nominee.

Regardless of the First Dog's breed, or point of origin, one thing is for sure: it will have some company in Washington, D.C., joined by Vice President-elect Joe Biden's new puppy, German Shepherd his grandchildren named "Champ."

Biden had also said that he will adopt another dog from a shelter, providing Champ a playmate. The move may have also acted as a conciliatory bone to the animal activist community, which criticized his decision to not adopt a rescue dog to begin with.

I think it would go a long way with the public if they choose a shelter dog. I see this as a positive step and a great way to lead by example.

I'm so glad they are adopting from a shelter. This will benefit shelters everywhere if our President chooses his dog from there.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if they choose a shelter dog? I hope that the idea of such isn't "beneath" them. I'm sure that the dog they finally bring home will be loved and held close to their hearts.

I highly doubt that they will get a shelter dog, much less a puppy. They are being too specific in their choice (due to the allergy) and that means the chance is slim to none.. Of course, I'm sure the government is good at "inventing" a rescue dog that meets their requirements.. pretty sad.. good intent but will never happen that way.

I think that the President should be PATIENT and wait until they can find the dog they are looking for at a shelter. Using the internet allows you to search at shelters outside your local area. I always visit the local shelters and request they notify me when they take in a dog meeting my specs. Patience is a virtue and i these cases usually returns a positve result.

He should really choose a shelter dog. When he was a senator he was very pro animal and this would be a great way to show that he still is.

I really hope they choose a shelter dog and set a wonderful example for the rest of our country! This could be huge step towards spreading awareness about adopting a pet rather than buying one!

I hope the Obama's go with the idea of a shelter dog. It does not matter what kind of dog it is, if they form a bond with it. Just because they are the first family does not mean they have to get a dog based on what kind past presidents have had. I hope the "change" is included in their decision for what breed the White House dog will be and where it will be from!

It would be great if the Obama girls could have a chance to visit an area shelter, or puppy mill. That might make such an impact that the decision would be made. It certainly could be helpful if the girls started to lobby their dad for $ or laws benefitting animals.

I wonder how close they are to deciding. Im sure Dad is very busy at the moment, getting the economy under control for example.

Hopefully the girls will be able to get one soon. Finding the right dog with the right personality and the correct breed will be hard. I hope people are understanding if they aren't able to find one in a shelter. They should have the right to choose a breeder if they cant find a shelter pup.

Maybe this will set an example, that if a shelter dog is good enough for the president's daugther's and family then they are good enough for the rest of America, and we can put an end on so many dogs ending up in shelters and backyard breeders and puppy mills. I am hopeful for a new tomorrow. God bless Obama and his wonderful family.

It's so nice to hear that they are looking to adopt their dog. It's possible to find the kind of dog that you want, even a breed specific dog. You just need to know where to look. If there are allergies involved, it's good that they are taking their time with this. Better to wait and be sure, than to get one too quickly and then discover that the dog isn't a good match for them!

The hunt is tougher due to the allergy factor, but why choose a Labradoodle and support a mixed breed industry when a standard poodle would be just as good a choice? Labradoodles cannot be guaranteed to be hypoallergenic, they are a mixed breed and as such can run the gamut! Promote rescue but promoting an already glutted "designer dog" fascination could be disastrous!

I think they should get a shih tzu. I must admit that I have two shih tzu which might explain why I think they should get one. The reason I think that they should get a shih tzu is that they are hypoallergenic for his daughters allergies, and they are smaller dogs so they could easily take a shih tzu with them. Plus shih tzus were breed in China and Tibet to be palace dogs (or white house dogs)
