TV Host Gives Tips to Keep Feline Household Peace

Browse News

NEW YORK -- Airways are dominated by reality programming, and of those concerning animals, most focus on dogs. But one Animal Planet show is proving that American households love their feline pets just as much.

Returning for a second season, "Housecat Housecall" is breaking into the canine-dominated television world by solving common cat issues that many pet owners face.

“For the series, we profile 12 families dealing with a broad range of real-life kitty concerns in an effort to relate to as many cat owners as possible," said Dr. Katrina Warren, BVSc.

Now Warren is offering a couple tips to the Zootoo community with actionable solutions for bringing harmony back to their households.

What should I do before bringing a new kitten into the family?

Take some time to kitten proof your house before you bring your kitten home. Kittens are endlessly curious creatures that love to explore and often end up getting trapped in hard to reach places. Remove all dangling cords and remove precious ornaments and glassware from coffee tables and shelves

You will need a sturdy crate for transport, scratching post, climbing tree, litter box, food and water bowls and a breakaway collar with an ID tag.

All kittens need play time several times a day.

Keep your kitten indoors. Generally an indoor cat lives to a much older age than an outdoor one.

How do I ensure I find the right kitten or cat for me and my family?

Finding the ideal companion cat can be a fun project for the whole family. Remember that cats tend to live, on average, for around 12 to 15 years, with some living considerably longer. Take your time and do your homework in order to make sure you choose the cat that is most compatible with you and your lifestyle.

Here are some things to consider:

Temperament. Cats, particularly representatives of individual breeds, can vary dramatically - from quiet, gentle little homebodies to personality-plus party animals. Some need lots of time and attention, while others are far less demanding. Some like the Siamese or Oriental are very vocal, so they would not be appropriate if you cherish your peace and quiet.

Lifestyle. There is absolutely no point falling in love with a glamour-puss like a Persian, if you are unable to do justice to her time-consuming grooming requirements. Likewise, some on-the-go breeds, such as the Burmese need a lot of exercise and attention.

Children. Most cats make wonderful playmates for children, but a few are less tolerant of boisterous antics or careless handling.

Kitten or Cat. If you don't have the time or energy to spend on a lively, boisterous kitten, then consider adopting an older, more settled cat?

Other Pets. Cats, particularly when acquired as kittens, can be taught to get along happily with a wide variety of other companion animals, including birds and dogs. Some breeds, like the Burmese, traditionally take living with other pets in stride.

Dr. Katrina Warren is the host of "Housecat Housecall" presented by Purina Cat Chow and airs on Animal Planet, Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. EST, with an encore Sundays at 8 a.m.

I so wish I had Animal Planet access. This sounds like a wonderful and - in my case - a much needed program.

Perhaps I can catch episodes online or 'On Demand'...

I am so glad House Cat House Call is on the air. So many shows aim for dog owners. Finally cat owners are being recognized. I hope the tv show expands though. The episodes are too short to gather much out of it. Maybe they'll make a prime time version in the near future...I can dream...lol

Sounds like a great show. Especially for someone just starting out with a kitten, good pointers. Be nice if they had something on helping cats get along as you introduce new ones to the group. For the most part mine get along, but then they do have their days.

I guess so, but some days they are a bit much. And then it seems to go that way for the day! And you can't put them in the corner for time out! But I have seperated them into different rooms. :0 :) :0

I'm glad they added this show! I don't know much about cat behavior so I can't wait to learn more. It's a start at making the balance a bit more even between all the dog related programming on Animal Planet. Barking Mad is another of my favorites because it deals with behavioral issues in a variety of species- It's just too bad it's on so early in the morning!

How about this: don't research breeds at all, instead, go to your local Humane Society and adopt a friendly, mild-tempered mixed breed, probably for free.

That's a good thought... I never thought about that. I'm sure the same goes for dogs, too. I can't see a guinea pig selecting someone, though, since they are prey animals are run until they know they can trust you.

We just got a new kitty, full of fire and brimestone, he's now 12 weeks old and giving our Cocker Spaniel a run for his money, old boy(9) just wants to sleep on the recliner. Any new show about cats and their ways of life is great to have for the kitty lover.

You had a great article for people wanting to
adopt our feline friends. Thank God when we
adopted Bailey she was 2-1/2 and very serene.

Couldn't believe when we brought her home, we had
no food for her or litter box and had to leave the house to
go get these things. She was left alone for about 45 minutes
in an environment she just encountered. When we got home she
was just laying in a chair like she had been here forever and
waiting for her family to return.

So I would find it difficult to take on a youngun' and leave
them unattended. Hope we have her for a good many years
but if something does happen to her as she has FelV/Fip/FIV/
Toxoplasmosis. I would still consider the older feline. Especially
at my age of 66.

Thanks again for your great article.

Don't know. Maybe I will try writing to them--I am at my wits end. My beloved Elmo was once the youngest of three cats and everybody got along. Both his "brothers" passed over the Rainbow Bridge and he was lone king for about two years. Then we acquired Ralph Man or he acquired us and there was hell to pay. He definitely was not welcomed and his turf is my husband's office and the den when Elmo is not looking. Now I have been caring for my daughter's cat for some six months. Her turf is a bedroom (and bath) and the den when the Ralph Man isn't in it and when Elmo is otherwise occupied (usually sleeping). She doesn't like Elmo or the Ralph Man and will charge them upon sight. Most of the day Elmo "guards" the upper level of his house and doesn't tolerate any visitors. I have to keep a spray bottle handy at all times (surely don't want them to get hurt) and lock everybody up in their respective places when I have to go out. It's tiring!

I think cats are pretty easy to raise and that is why we don't see cat shows fixing their promblems. But with that said, I would definatly tune into an episode on how to get cats to live together. My boy Dakota will not tolerate another cat, so I don't have any more, he loves the dogs. Sometimes I think he believes he is a dog, he even goes on walks with us.

I thought I had a few issues with Mr Fluff not really caring for the company of his siblings. The youngest of 4 at one time he didn't take to good to others coming into the household as his elders passed. They have their spats and sometimes there is some fur flying but they also have their moments where as they will groom each other and sleep together. On their terms of course! Hope they do have some episodes of dealing with "problem children".

We had to keep one of our rescues in a seperate room for over two years because he viciously attacked all the others every time he saw them. Then we rescued a kitten & he became fascinated with her & would stand on his hind legs & watch her in the condo. They became fast friends & his entire personality changed & he loves them all. It was a very interesting transformation.

I wonder what made him change his mind. I have a boy now that will not tolerate another cat and we had to keep him seperated from my older baby, Squeaker until she passed away. I would love to have another cat someday but don't see that happening with his bad attitude. He loves dogs though.

I'm not sure. Maybe it was paternal instinct, maybe he regressed back to his kittenhood & got to start his life over as a happier kitty. She was only about 4 months old & he was just mesmerized by her. They would pat each other through the bars of the condo. It became apparent that he didn't hate her so we brought her out, held her & let him see her. Within a few days they were running all over the house, a 3lb kitten & a 15lb cat, rolling each other & tackling each other & just having a great time. After weeks of that we started reintroducing him to the others & he was fine. He's actually become very docile & lost all his alpha tendencies.

They do need some bird shows. Some people don't know what they are getting into when they take on a bird. Maybe a good show would educate people before they make that commitment. Birds can be difficult.

Many animals get "neglected" with the shows out there. Write/e-mail Animal Planet to look into doing shows for the different animals.

I haven't had a cat in years. Currently, my dogs do not get along with cats, so I guess it will be a while before I adopt a kitten.

i was always lucky that my dogs and cats got along as can be seen in some of my pics. the best solution is to introduce them as puppies and kittens.

I agree however just as in humans, sometimes some personalities don't blend as well as others but they can just ignore each other and not fight!
