Top Three Makeover Finalists Announced

Browse News

ORLANDO -- What better place than Disney World to set up a fairytale ending.

After months of anticipation and thousands of increased animal adoptions resulting from the publicity, Zootoo’s Shelter Makeover contest reached its final stages Thursday, with three finalists learning they are still in the running for the $1 million grand prize.

“Some of you didn’t know what to do with it, but a thousand of you did and today we have 20 shelters here,” said Zootoo founder Richard Thompson, the contest’s creator. Thompson was referring to a makeover contest kit that enabled some 1,000 shelters to enter the competition last October.

That field had been whittled to 20 shelters, with representatives of each on-hand here, as more than 200 people eagerly gathered to hear Thompson announce the three finalists.

“Jefferson County, come over here!” Thompson shouted, as the Jefferson County SPCA of Watertown, N.Y. was the first named to the final group.

Asked why her Jefferson County facility wants the makeover so badly, “Need, for one, stability,” said Linda Miles. “We’re 120 years old and the fastest growing county in the U.S.”

Then Thompson was at it again, ala Bob Barker, formerly of The Price Is Right fame, telling another shelter finalist representative to come on down.

“Human Society of Ohio Valley!” he bellowed.

“No, I can’t believe it!” said Cheryl Byres of the Ohio Valley shelter. “We’re so fortunate, I mean, the entire animal community is fortunate.”

Then Thompson pulled one last card from his magical deck of finalists.

“Stray Rescue of St. Louis!” he yelled.

“This would really be a dream come true, and I’m gonna start crying again because so many animals are depending on that million dollars in St. Louis, and all over the country too,” said Randy Grim of Stray Rescue.

The finalists and other prize winners were announced at the Animal Care Expo 2008 Convention. Thompson says the contest celebrates the shelters and the people behind them.

“The idea isn’t so much for me, one person winning up to a million-dollar makeover, but the fact that all communities are getting recognition and getting support they’ve never seen before,” he said.

“If you have a beautiful humane society, it says the community cares about kindness and animals as well, so that’s very important,” said Wayne Pacelle of the Humane Society of the United States, which is partnered with Zootoo.com. “Zootoo is a great partner and we’re glad to have them here at Animal Expo.”

Regardless of the contest’s eventual grand prize winner, the competition has already had a major impact on its participants.

“Once Zootoo came to town and left, in 48 hours we adopted over 60-some dogs in two days,” Grim said. “Our adoption rates have gone sky high, everything has been elevated.”

The contest winner will be announced next Wednesday, May 21 in USA Today and on FOX TV’s The Morning Show with Mike and Juliette.

“The attention we’ve received, first and foremost, we’ve already won,” Byres said.

Every shelter is very deserving of support from the community and organizations such as this one. I am really hoping Butte Humane Society wins the competion. I have adopted many pets from them over the years and they are an asset to this community. Let us do all we can to support our local shelters.

When you visit Stray Rescue's actual website, they have something much different to say. See for yourself:

www.helpstrayrescue.org

Sounds like they are getting their building, and they are very grateful to zootoo. I'll keep looking into this, but I don't think that the article you found is truthful, at least not completly.

Well, every shelter can make this a win-win situation by getting their local news, radio and TV stations to air the contest and pay attention to the shelter - like get the TV station to go to the shelter and do an interview with the workers and show all the adorable kittens and pups...... I wish every shelter could win - but they can capitalize on the contest - too bad some shelters didn't use the contest as a way to do a adoption-rally-marathon? (I have to think out the details of that one?) Good Luck to Everyone! even though I wish my shelter would win?

We are a tiny little shelter that saved almost 120 dogs mostly from hi-kill shelters, also countless cats and kittens. We have the most dedicated group of people I ever met. I feel we are already winners. But any money we get will go to saving more lives, so we are trying our best.

Wow. Our shelter was not in the contest last year. I hope we can stay in the top 20 this year and share in the excitement. We are a very small group and could really help more animals if we were able to expand. No matter who wins the animals will be better off though, which is the most important.

This is all really nice. But will people take the time to vote for these HS this year. I know some of the HS have 3000 people. All it would take is for them to vote and all the others are out of it.

I'm glad they are doing it differently this year where America Votes. Because as the story says, "If you have a beautiful humane society (shelter), the community cares" and by America Voting, this will ring true. I'm anxious to see if our community really cares.

Don't feel defeated befoe it is over. It is amazing what just a few people can do if you do it every day. There are two us us that ZooToo daily and faithfully. there are about 8 others that are regulars but up until now not on daily basis. Now they too are stepping up their efforts. We area small shelter too, mostly funded by contributions and we take in every stray from the city animal control as well as those turned in by their owners. Early in the game we were # 4, dropped to 16, then to 19 - we panicked and pushed hard for others to help. Now we are back at 17. Don't give up. There is time left. Push your workers, volunteers, family, friends - get the media involved - the newspaper, TV. Every little bit helps. I know by saying all this maybe I'm hurting our chances but no matter who wins - it is all for the animals. They are what this is all for. Best wishes to you, your fellow staff member and the animals.

I just wanted to congratulate all winners in this contest. ZooToo did a wonderful thing in helping make awareness to our shelters.

I was at the conferances and learned so much! I have brought back to my staff insperation, and we are doing more to make a positive change!

we didnt get to see the top 3 revieled, because we were still on the plane, but I have to admit, I was so let down when we got the text message. It took me a couple hours to feel better about it. My feelings changed when we got to the conferance and felt the spririt in the air, met the other rescuers, and actually got some great vegan food in my belly. It was a great expierance,a dn I cant wait to hear what Richards money has done to save lives!

Congrats to the winners. I only wish the contest could have been judged on the most needed shelters instead of who did more on the zootoo website. Larger facilities seem to have a better chance than smaller places, even though their needs could have been greater. But I'm so pleased that zootoo helped to make all of us more aware of taking care of our animals.

I want to add my congratulations to all of the top twenty finalists, the top three and the winner. All of these institutions, their staffs, boards and volunteers are to be commended. I want to thank ZooToo for raising the public's awareness of the needs of shelters and the animals who reside in them. This has been a win for all for the animals that seek permanent homes.

Congratulations to all the winners. Thank You Zootoo for all you have done. We are all winners no matter what just rescuing the helpless homeless pets of our communities. This has been so much fun and I just hope we can continue to band together and stay strong for the animals. WOOF WOOF MEOW MEOW from all the pets that are being helped by YOU and Your community. Let's all do our part and make all of our shelter no-kill. I have a ranch and work with special needs children and animals. The dogs are a great part..animal therapy has been scientifically proven and I can tell u first hand that it really does work. We need to get more shelter dogs trained and working in schools, nursing homes etc. it would make such a big difference in today's world.

I'm so pleased to see that HSOV placed 1st runner up! Just to see this whole idea in publication and the love & caring from so many pet lovers is the most amazing part. These institutions deserve recognition for all of the hard (and tearful) work they do for our communities. If not for my shelter (HSOV) I wouldn't have my wonderful dog Sophia. Congratulations to ALL the shelters!

I have read the negative comments from "sore losers". But the contest was to find a shelter that was in dire need. Sounds like some of the shelters are a little better off than others and not quite as needy. I know HSOP could use the money, but the Marietta shelter that placed in the top 3 is in far worst shape than ours. Be thankful for the community support your shelter may have gathered and be ready to go in the next contest.
