Top Three Makeover Finalists Announced

ORLANDO -- What better place than Disney World to set up a fairytale ending.

After months of anticipation and thousands of increased animal adoptions resulting from the publicity, Zootoo’s Shelter Makeover contest reached its final stages Thursday, with three finalists learning they are still in the running for the $1 million grand prize.

“Some of you didn’t know what to do with it, but a thousand of you did and today we have 20 shelters here,” said Zootoo founder Richard Thompson, the contest’s creator. Thompson was referring to a makeover contest kit that enabled some 1,000 shelters to enter the competition last October.

That field had been whittled to 20 shelters, with representatives of each on-hand here, as more than 200 people eagerly gathered to hear Thompson announce the three finalists.

“Jefferson County, come over here!” Thompson shouted, as the Jefferson County SPCA of Watertown, N.Y. was the first named to the final group.

Asked why her Jefferson County facility wants the makeover so badly, “Need, for one, stability,” said Linda Miles. “We’re 120 years old and the fastest growing county in the U.S.”

Then Thompson was at it again, ala Bob Barker, formerly of The Price Is Right fame, telling another shelter finalist representative to come on down.

“Human Society of Ohio Valley!” he bellowed.

“No, I can’t believe it!” said Cheryl Byres of the Ohio Valley shelter. “We’re so fortunate, I mean, the entire animal community is fortunate.”

Then Thompson pulled one last card from his magical deck of finalists.

“Stray Rescue of St. Louis!” he yelled.

“This would really be a dream come true, and I’m gonna start crying again because so many animals are depending on that million dollars in St. Louis, and all over the country too,” said Randy Grim of Stray Rescue.

The finalists and other prize winners were announced at the Animal Care Expo 2008 Convention. Thompson says the contest celebrates the shelters and the people behind them.

“The idea isn’t so much for me, one person winning up to a million-dollar makeover, but the fact that all communities are getting recognition and getting support they’ve never seen before,” he said.

“If you have a beautiful humane society, it says the community cares about kindness and animals as well, so that’s very important,” said Wayne Pacelle of the Humane Society of the United States, which is partnered with Zootoo.com. “Zootoo is a great partner and we’re glad to have them here at Animal Expo.”

Regardless of the contest’s eventual grand prize winner, the competition has already had a major impact on its participants.

“Once Zootoo came to town and left, in 48 hours we adopted over 60-some dogs in two days,” Grim said. “Our adoption rates have gone sky high, everything has been elevated.”

The contest winner will be announced next Wednesday, May 21 in USA Today and on FOX TV’s The Morning Show with Mike and Juliette.

“The attention we’ve received, first and foremost, we’ve already won,” Byres said.

I just wanted to congratulate all winners in this contest. ZooToo did a wonderful thing in helping make awareness to our shelters.

I was at the conferances and learned so much! I have brought back to my staff insperation, and we are doing more to make a positive change!

we didnt get to see the top 3 revieled, because we were still on the plane, but I have to admit, I was so let down when we got the text message. It took me a couple hours to feel better about it. My feelings changed when we got to the conferance and felt the spririt in the air, met the other rescuers, and actually got some great vegan food in my belly. It was a great expierance,a dn I cant wait to hear what Richards money has done to save lives!

Congratulations to everyone that entered the contest. I was in the audience when the finalists were announced, and although there was only one top prize, all of you are winners in my book for all the hard work you do in rescuing and helping the animals.

Although I was hopefull that our small shelter could pull together enough participation to get us even close to the running, I am happy for the winners. I am rooting on the St. Louis shelter! Good luck!

Congrats to the winners. I only wish the contest could have been judged on the most needed shelters instead of who did more on the zootoo website. Larger facilities seem to have a better chance than smaller places, even though their needs could have been greater. But I'm so pleased that zootoo helped to make all of us more aware of taking care of our animals.

I want to add my congratulations to all of the top twenty finalists, the top three and the winner. All of these institutions, their staffs, boards and volunteers are to be commended. I want to thank ZooToo for raising the public's awareness of the needs of shelters and the animals who reside in them. This has been a win for all for the animals that seek permanent homes.

Congratulations to all the winners. Thank You Zootoo for all you have done. We are all winners no matter what just rescuing the helpless homeless pets of our communities. This has been so much fun and I just hope we can continue to band together and stay strong for the animals. WOOF WOOF MEOW MEOW from all the pets that are being helped by YOU and Your community. Let's all do our part and make all of our shelter no-kill. I have a ranch and work with special needs children and animals. The dogs are a great part..animal therapy has been scientifically proven and I can tell u first hand that it really does work. We need to get more shelter dogs trained and working in schools, nursing homes etc. it would make such a big difference in today's world.

I'm so pleased to see that HSOV placed 1st runner up! Just to see this whole idea in publication and the love & caring from so many pet lovers is the most amazing part. These institutions deserve recognition for all of the hard (and tearful) work they do for our communities. If not for my shelter (HSOV) I wouldn't have my wonderful dog Sophia. Congratulations to ALL the shelters!

Yeah for the animals of St. Louis who may be sleeping on the streets, lonely and afraid, but will soon have a safe haven and a second chance thanks to ZOOTOO and especially Randi and all the folks who made this happen for Stray Rescue of St. Louis. Paws up to you all from the Humane Society of Parkersburg.

I have read the negative comments from "sore losers". But the contest was to find a shelter that was in dire need. Sounds like some of the shelters are a little better off than others and not quite as needy. I know HSOP could use the money, but the Marietta shelter that placed in the top 3 is in far worst shape than ours. Be thankful for the community support your shelter may have gathered and be ready to go in the next contest.

With every contest there are rules, we all have to follow them, and with every contest there is a winner, but sometimes the contests have losers, this is not the case here.

I don't care who you are if you qualified, entered and followed the rules then you won.
Even if you weren't in the top 20, most shelters I've heard about got so much more community support than they had previously. That alone increases your volunteer base and donation income, so you won. Our Pets Without Parents made #7 and we are so proud of them that they brought home $6,000. I know with some more work there will be a newer, bigger, better shelter someday.
Thanks Richard Thompson and Zootoo for all you did to help so many animals nationwide, everyone should appreciate the time, energy and money put into this contest and be so thankful for the media exposure alone that has brought shelter issues to the attention of people everywhere.
Every single shelter who entered and the ones who didn't or couldn't should be so proud of what you accomplish everyday in making unwanted pets lives a little better because you are involved, Thank You All.

there are rules that the rescues had to follow, my guess is that your rescue didnt have a non-profit status? not saying its not a good rescue, there is fine print you need to read tho, no need to be bashing on someone who is trying to help-this brought an amazing awarness to animal shelters and the need for help-no matter who wins, this site did a great thing for animal community

Lest than 40 hours and the waiting will be over. The anticipation is about to make me nuts. All of you that supported the Humane Society of Ohio Valley (Marietta) we will be meeting at the Harmar at 8:30ish to hold hands together. Whatever the outcome, we have won so much. So come join us and let's all keep Ms Cheryl in our prayers. I thought she was going to faint last week when they called our shelters name. Hug your own critters tonight and think positive thoughts.
Thank you Richard and Zootoo for this wonderful opportunity. The publicity alone has made such a difference. To the other two finalists, good luck too. The three of our shelters all need this and whatever happens, we will be happy for the 4 legged pals we are all helping.

THANK YOU DEBBIE KELLEY FOR ALL THE HARD WORK YOU DID IN BRINGING ZOOTOO TO THE ATTENTION OF THE OHIO VALLEY SHELTER. EVERYONE IN MARIETTA AND YOUR SHELTER SHOULD BE VERY PROUD OF WHAT THEY HAVE ACCOMPLISHED.

I KNOW YOU WILL WIN ON WEDNESDAY MORNING.

ZooToo rocks! This contest has shed some light on the issues that every shelter has - not enough money and too many animals to save. It's amazing to see how the communities have rallied around their shelters. And St. Louis is especially lucky to have Randy Grim in it's corner. Good luck Stray Rescue!!!

Congrats HSOV!!! I am soo pround of you Cheryl and everyone who has worked so hard to make this dream a reality. It is so close we can almost touch it but yet it still is so unreal. This community needs this so badly and I am sure there are so many other shelters all over the U.S. that need it just as badly. Thank you ZOOTOO for bringing some of that help. Congrats to the other 2 finalists as well. I will be waiting and watching!!! Winston has his paws crossed as well for all his furry little buddies that would benefit from this!! GOOD LUCK!!!

I was in the "audience" as Richard congratulated the Humane Society of Parkersburg for being in the Top 20 shelters in the million dollar make-over contest, and I agreed with him completely when he said that all shelters, and all homeless animals everywhere were winners because of this contest. It DID draw community attention to the plight of homeless animals, and to the needs of shelters which care for them. Of course, I was pulling for the Humane Society of Parkersburg to be the BIG winner, but I was thrilled for the Mid-Ohio Valley Humane Society ~ they've had a really rough time for many years, and this (being in the top three) will be a boost for them. Best wishes to the top three ~ I wish you could all be the BIG winner!

I am die hard supporter of the Bowling Green - Warren County Humane Soceity in KY. I am so proud that they were in the Top 20. I attended the conference in Orlando and was at the Zootoo presentation. My heart was pounding as Richard Thompson announced the Top 3 and other awards. Although I was disappointed that our shelter did not make the Top 3, our Director Lorri Hare and her staff are and always will be WINNERS in my book. They do an awesome job on a daily basis and the community of Bowling Green stands behind their work. I met many great people at the conference that are doing an awesome job for our animals. I can honestly say I was inspired by every story I heard. You all touched my heart and made me want to change career fields to be "one of you" everyday for the rest of my life. My hat goes off to each and every one of you. I want to specifically say to the ladies I met from DAWS in CT and Parkersburg in WV....YOU ROCK and keep in touch.

One last comment....to HSUS, you put on one heck of a conference. I learned so much and feel I can be a better Board Member to my organization since the conference. Thank you so much!
