Tn. Shelter Teaches Public about Pit Bulls

Browse News

KNOXVILE, Tn. - Tennessee's WVLT news reported this weekend about an educational program that gives new life to public perception about pit bulls.

Sponsored by the Young-Williams Animal Shelter, the class aims at teaching people how to raise their pits responsibly. Attendees said the course focused on socialization and fostering kindness toward the dogs.

A main lesson is that pits, like other dogs, bite because they're scared, not because they're angry or mean.

One student who recently adopted a family of pit bulls said he was not a fan of pit bulls before the class, but his opinion has since been changed.

The class, which was open to anyone curious about the breed as well as owners, also highlighted the importance of spay/ neuter and socializing.

Tennessee has recently seen a few pit bull attacks, one of which lead to a death. Legislation to ban the breed has been proposed, too, and it's hoped that this small move could help prevent that from passing.

Thirty people attended the first class, and a second has already filled. Shelter reps say the free course was meant to be educational, not to promote the breed.

To find out more about this seminar, go to Young-Williams Animal Shelter Web site at knoxpets.org/classroom.asp. And don't forget to share your pit bull stories, or any other stories you've by emailing us at news@zootoo.com or calling us at 877-777-4204.

Some of our local shelters have similar programs and even require people adopting pit bulls to sign up for the class. I hope it helps.

People are to blame for the problems with this breed and it won't change unless we change the people.

Good idea! I think that any shelter that adopt out pit bulls should educate potential owners on the care of this breed. There are too many people out there with good intentions but not enough basic knowledge on dogs, pit bulls in particular.

This is a great idea. Education is what it is all about. The problem Pits face is based on ignorance that ironically is perpetuated by the media.

That is great to educate the public. Pit Bulls get a bad rap. If raised right they are very loving dogs like all other breeds.

I'm so glad to hear that there are classes like this out there. Pit bulls have such a terrible reputation and it's so unwarranted. As long as thier reputation remains so bad, people will still train them to be attack dogs and fighting dogs and the news stories of these "vicious dogs" will continue. I just wish there were more stories like this in the news.

Good idea but who is going to the class? Probably not the people who need to go. Maybe judges can sentence people guilty of abusing animals or fighting dogs to take this class on top of some other community service and jail time.

I love the concept of a class teaching responsible dog ownership. I , however, disagree strongly with what they are stating that pits only bite becuase they are afraid. I really do not know how they can claim that. It would depend on the dog and there are dogs, especially if they are from fighting stock, that would bite because they are aggressive and "angry."
Again, I applaud the class but think they need to check their information.

Great idea. More inner city shelters with large Pit Bull populations need to have these types of programs to re-educate the public and to correct the myths and incorrect information that has been perpetuated by the media.

Education is the KEY! So many people are scared of this breed because of the media ONLY reporting the bad. If a golden retriever bit someone, it wouldn't be on the news, but if a pit bull does, it's posted all over the media. Educating the public about spay/neuter is the key to fewer deaths in shelters due to overcrowding! Pit Bulls are amazing, just like any other dog, it's all how the dog is raised. PEOPLE are the ones who make any dog bad!

We recently had a pit bull at the shelter. She was the most loving thing! Not all pit bulls are bad, and any breed could become violent if put in certain situations. The media really likes to focus on the pit bulls. I think an educational class is a great idea.

I've heard a lot of bad things about pit bulls and they scare me. Some people say they are all bad while some say they are sweet, loving dogs. I think it might be all in how they are raised. An educational class just might help.

Education is great! I hope that the entire scope of pit bulls/dogs/pets is addressed. It kinda of sounds like a little lopsided article or class, but then the article isn't very long - so it is hard to tell.

What a great idea! This breed allegedly ends up in shelters more than any other so, hopefulyy, this education will facilitate more adoptions. We should all send this article to our local shelters. Maybe in the staff's spare time ... .

We need more programs like this. There are so many pit bulls in our community, but they are hard to find homes for. Either someone wants them for the wrong reasons (like fighting) or they are afraid of them and think they are bad dogs. I have know many wonderful, sweet pit bulls.

I think it would be an even greater idea to see if they can get trainers to volunteer some time to provide free or cut rate training classes specifically for pit bull owners. Along with educating owners this might increase the nmber of owners that actually get the proper training for their dogs.
