Tn. Shelter Teaches Public about Pit Bulls

Browse News

KNOXVILE, Tn. - Tennessee's WVLT news reported this weekend about an educational program that gives new life to public perception about pit bulls.

Sponsored by the Young-Williams Animal Shelter, the class aims at teaching people how to raise their pits responsibly. Attendees said the course focused on socialization and fostering kindness toward the dogs.

A main lesson is that pits, like other dogs, bite because they're scared, not because they're angry or mean.

One student who recently adopted a family of pit bulls said he was not a fan of pit bulls before the class, but his opinion has since been changed.

The class, which was open to anyone curious about the breed as well as owners, also highlighted the importance of spay/ neuter and socializing.

Tennessee has recently seen a few pit bull attacks, one of which lead to a death. Legislation to ban the breed has been proposed, too, and it's hoped that this small move could help prevent that from passing.

Thirty people attended the first class, and a second has already filled. Shelter reps say the free course was meant to be educational, not to promote the breed.

To find out more about this seminar, go to Young-Williams Animal Shelter Web site atknoxpets.org And don't forget to share your pit bull stories, or any other stories you've by emailing us at news@zootoo.com or calling us at 877-777-4204.

We recently had a pit bull at the shelter. She was the most loving thing! Not all pit bulls are bad, and any breed could become violent if put in certain situations. The media really likes to focus on the pit bulls. I think an educational class is a great idea.

I've heard a lot of bad things about pit bulls and they scare me. Some people say they are all bad while some say they are sweet, loving dogs. I think it might be all in how they are raised. An educational class just might help.

Education is great! I hope that the entire scope of pit bulls/dogs/pets is addressed. It kinda of sounds like a little lopsided article or class, but then the article isn't very long - so it is hard to tell.

What a great idea! This breed allegedly ends up in shelters more than any other so, hopefulyy, this education will facilitate more adoptions. We should all send this article to our local shelters. Maybe in the staff's spare time ... .

We need more programs like this to combat the negative press that "aggressive" dog breeds are getting. I hope that this educational trend continues.

We need more programs like this. There are so many pit bulls in our community, but they are hard to find homes for. Either someone wants them for the wrong reasons (like fighting) or they are afraid of them and think they are bad dogs. I have know many wonderful, sweet pit bulls.

You hear it all the time. I don't think it is the poor animal's fault, it is the poor animal's uneducated owner. People make the problem worse.

This seems like a good thing to attend.

Great idea - the more information owners have, possibly the better care and handling of dogs would occur.

I think it would be an even greater idea to see if they can get trainers to volunteer some time to provide free or cut rate training classes specifically for pit bull owners. Along with educating owners this might increase the nmber of owners that actually get the proper training for their dogs.

This is a fantastic idea! I hope other shelters and cities around the nation will put together similar classes. Pit Bulls are a misunderstood breed. It's all in how you raise them. Good Job!

This is great to educate about pit bulls. Pit bulls are not naturally mean...its the owners who train them to be mean.

Good for them. Not all pit bulls are dangerous or mean. They deserve a chance to find the right home with responsible owners.

This is a great idea-perhaps more places should try this approach. Humans certainly need to be educated on this breed of dog before owning one.

I know they didn't mean to focus just on pitbulls but it seems now that they are an important part of the program. I always said I would never get a pitbull, not because of their reputation but I like really big dogs like shepards, rotts, or Danes. Well, I have a full blooded pit now because he was abandoned at 7 weeks and he is the best dog ever. he loves everyone and wants to play with any dog and acts like a pup all the time. He is an eye opener to everyone we know and has changed alot of opinions around because no one likes or trust pit bulls around here. Somoe people even ask if he is really a pitbull. He was so socialized as a puppy that I think he is the best dog we own. So alot of what is said about raising them is true, although not 100% but enough to have a really good dog.

We have a pit mix that didn't look as much like one when we first brought her home. She is the sweetest dog, but we may have missed the chance to have her in our lives if she had looked more like one as a young puppy, since my husband was wary of pit bulls. Now he realizes what wonderful dogs they are, all because of her!!

I have always felt that the behavior of a domesticated animal is directly related to how they are reared and trained. This breed specific ban is a classis example of blaming the victim, because that is what these animals are--victims of their owners neglect and refusal to train them properly--so you have multiple victims: The animal, who many times is euthanized, and the person who is harmed.

This is a great program. I hope other shelters follow this shelter's lead. This is one way of making people aware that it is not the dog, but the owner, that creates the problem.

Wow, what a great program! I am all about education and working to prevent the problems that people have experienced in the past. I would be in full favor of other shelters and organizations also giving these kinds of classes. The one downside is that the people who could likely most benefit would not attend willingly.

It's a shame that the name pit bull leads people to think it is automatically a vicious dog. It's not the breed it's the owner.
