Three-legged Dog Saves Couple from Fire

Browse News

INDEPENDENCE COUNTY, Ark. -– Saved from going to an Arkansas pound last year, a crippled, three-legged rat terrier had the chance to return the favor to her new owners last week.

Five-year old Tripod was sleeping in the bed with John and Mary Smith when a fire broke out in their home.

She is being credited as the reason why the disabled couple found the strength to make it out of the home.

“I can’t just say, she’s my angel,” said Mary Smith, overwhelmed with emotion of the tiny dog’s heroics.

With their blankets already on fire, Tripod urged the couple to hurry. But Mary was overwhelmed with the task of getting herself mobile, plus her husband into his wheelchair. She was ready to give up hope up – accepting their fate; however, Tripod had other plans.

“Tripod kept pulling on my gown getting me out and I said, ‘honey, please go on, go on,’ and she wouldn’t do it,” said the elderly woman. “She stayed right with me the entire time.”

Thanks to Tripod, her owners found the encouragement they needed to make it out unscathed -- a miraculous feat since the fire started in the couple’s bedroom.

The Smiths were the ones doing the saving last year when Tripod’s original owner was on the way to the pound with her.

“I said, ‘yes, bring her to me,’ ” said Mrs. Smith, who took her to a vet three days later.

The couple was concerned about Tripod’s front right leg, since she would not walk on it. While the vet said the leg could be re-broken to correct an old injury, “but as old as she is, to let it alone. She gets along just fine without it, so just let her live a happy life.”

It’s evident a happy life is what Tripod has. Her bum leg cannot keep her from jumping with delight to steal kisses and affection from the Smiths.

Now because of one another, Tripod, Mary and John will have the chance to keep enjoying each other’s love for a long time to come.

But for as beautiful as they all are together, puppy love won’t be enough for the Smiths to rebuild. They moved into their home only six months ago and didn’t have a homeowner’s insurance policy.

A relief fund has been set up with Citizen’s Bank and donations can be made at any local branch.

As for Tripod, she was treated to a day at the spa, complete with a pedicure and an oil rub down, by a Batesville dog groomer for her bravery.

That is so sweet. I heard that you could make donations going toward the couples' new home (their old one was destroyed.) Tripod deserves more than a spa!

These stories are always so great to here especially when its a rescue dog. SOme people are afraid to adopt them for fear of their unknown history but pups like Tripod can help change that.

...and not only that, but to have adopted a dog with a physical issue. What a good couple they are to do this. Wish more folks could look beyond what they consider to be a dog's 'defects.'

It goes to show you no kind deed is left unrepaid. Tripod returned the favor of having his life saved by this couple. There was a lot of love there. I hope the family can recover from this devastation. At least they have each other thanks to this loving pup. That is worth more than all the items in the world. Three cheers for Tripod.

I think is amazon how a three legged dog save a couple from a fire.
I also think it is amazon how the dog was strong enough to wake them because the fire would of filled his lungs with smoke and that would cause the barking to diminesh, and that would leave him to try to wake his owners by ether bitting,or winning as hard as he can.

Great story! I'm glad they all escaped the fire thanks to their dog! Good job, Tripod.

It is a pity they were uninsured, however. I hope they can get enough donations to get a new home. And it sounds like they are all three senior citizens so I hope this experience wasn't too much for them. I'm also a wee bit confused. Does Tripod have three legs, hense her name, and one of them is bad; or does she still have all four legs but since one is crippled, she's called Tripod? I'm a stickler for details.

OK, I'm replyimg to my own post. I just watched the video, and I can now see that the dog has all four legs. So why do the keep refering to her as a three-legged dog? None the less, three legs or four, she's still a hero!

I just popped in to say goodnight to Tripod.

I have a three legged cat whose leg was amputated when he was only about 24 hours old. I love him dearly. He's a hero to me just like sweet Tripod is.

Tripod was rescued from almost certain death (animals with medical problems often have trouble getting adopted) by this caring couple. She, in turn, rescued them from a certain death by fire. What an amazing story. Once again, we are shown how powerfully pets can impact our lives.

Now see, even animals know that one good turn deserves another (why can't people realize the same thing?)! Tripod had finally found a family to love that loved her as well and she wasn't about to let that slip away. God bless and good luck to them all and I hope they have many more years together as a family!

It's amazing how many times this happens, where people adopt a pet strictly out of unconditional love and the pet ends up saving their lives. I think what makes it more remarkable is that everyone in the family is disabled. I'm glad they're all safe and I hope they can recover quickly.

This was a great story ,however, a 3 legged dog is not really a "cripple". From my experience a 3 legged dog adapts to its loss of a limb without incident and is just as able to be a hero as any 4 legged dog. This ,however, doesn't diminish the fact that Tripod is a great dog who saved his owners lives.

Wow great story. It's a shame that they didn't have insurance, but at least they made it out as a family, safe and sound. Animals are truely are part of ours lives, that many couldn't live without. This family saw that literally! :)
