Three-legged Dog Saves Couple from Fire

Browse News

INDEPENDENCE COUNTY, Ark. -– Saved from going to an Arkansas pound last year, a crippled, three-legged rat terrier had the chance to return the favor to her new owners last week.

Five-year old Tripod was sleeping in the bed with John and Mary Smith when a fire broke out in their home.

She is being credited as the reason why the disabled couple found the strength to make it out of the home.

“I can’t just say, she’s my angel,” said Mary Smith, overwhelmed with emotion of the tiny dog’s heroics.

With their blankets already on fire, Tripod urged the couple to hurry. But Mary was overwhelmed with the task of getting herself mobile, plus her husband into his wheelchair. She was ready to give up hope up – accepting their fate; however, Tripod had other plans.

“Tripod kept pulling on my gown getting me out and I said, ‘honey, please go on, go on,’ and she wouldn’t do it,” said the elderly woman. “She stayed right with me the entire time.”

Thanks to Tripod, her owners found the encouragement they needed to make it out unscathed -- a miraculous feat since the fire started in the couple’s bedroom.

The Smiths were the ones doing the saving last year when Tripod’s original owner was on the way to the pound with her.

“I said, ‘yes, bring her to me,’ ” said Mrs. Smith, who took her to a vet three days later.

The couple was concerned about Tripod’s front right leg, since she would not walk on it. While the vet said the leg could be re-broken to correct an old injury, “but as old as she is, to let it alone. She gets along just fine without it, so just let her live a happy life.”

It’s evident a happy life is what Tripod has. Her bum leg cannot keep her from jumping with delight to steal kisses and affection from the Smiths.

Now because of one another, Tripod, Mary and John will have the chance to keep enjoying each other’s love for a long time to come.

But for as beautiful as they all are together, puppy love won’t be enough for the Smiths to rebuild. They moved into their home only six months ago and didn’t have a homeowner’s insurance policy.

A relief fund has been set up with Citizen’s Bank and donations can be made at any local branch.

As for Tripod, she was treated to a day at the spa, complete with a pedicure and an oil rub down, by a Batesville dog groomer for her bravery.

What a great story in every way. I've always believed that the animals "pay you back" in such incredible ways - and this is proof of just that. Mine sure have, by just knowing the friends I treasure, and never would have even met, had I not been trying to help the animals. I am so glad they are allsafe, and sorry about the loss of their himes. But - homes are replaceable!

The story about Tripod saving her elderly owners brings tears of joy to my eyes. What an amazing turn of events that the people saved her and then she saved them. This is truly a devoted little dog, and once again points out how animals have an uncanny sense about danger and protecting their owners. This little three-legged dog is an angel on earth.

You brought up a point that I missed when you said that here was a couple who probably were poor and couldn't afford the homeowners insurance, yet were kind enough to take Tripod into their home when she was on her way to the shelter. And the fact that they were both disabled and accepting the responsibility of taking care of a disabled dog is incredible too. They obviously were taking good care of Tripod since the story says they took her to the vet 3 days after they got her to have her leg checked out. These are good people and deserve much support from their community.

I love this story. I have a three legged dog and I'll bet she could do the same for me.Unlike some people animals don't see themslves as different even with a "hanycap"If nothing else it makes them stronger and more willing to love and trust.

I think no matter what the disabilty that your pet has doesnt mean you love them any less it makes your bond and friendship with your pets even stronger specialy when you are going through a tough time or even losing someone you truly care about.I know when i lost my Dad 14 years ago i had my beloved dalemation named Oreo she was my constant companion but a few year ago i had to say good bye to her.She is never forgotten she will live on in my memories of her.

This is a great story. These people and the dog were meant to be together, and it's wonderful that they found each other. They didn't give up on Tripod having a great life despite her "bum leg", and Tripod wouldn't let them give up on getting out of the fire. Hope to read an update that they are all happily living in a new home.

That couple is very lucky to have rescued such a special dog like Tripod. It's amazing how adaptable animals are. It doesn't surprise me a bit that she is just as active as another dog with four legs. I hope this threesome will have many happy years together.

When you said that you thought shelter animals knew they had been given a second chance, I totally believe that also. I adopted one of my schnauzers (who was only two years old) after her owner died and the family was going to have her put to sleep because no one wanted her. It seemed that Kelly somehow always knew that I had saved her and we had a lifetime special bond until we said goodbye 12 years later.
