Three-legged Dog Saves Couple from Fire

Browse News

INDEPENDENCE COUNTY, Ark. -– Saved from going to an Arkansas pound last year, a crippled, three-legged rat terrier had the chance to return the favor to her new owners last week.

Five-year old Tripod was sleeping in the bed with John and Mary Smith when a fire broke out in their home.

She is being credited as the reason why the disabled couple found the strength to make it out of the home.

“I can’t just say, she’s my angel,” said Mary Smith, overwhelmed with emotion of the tiny dog’s heroics.

With their blankets already on fire, Tripod urged the couple to hurry. But Mary was overwhelmed with the task of getting herself mobile, plus her husband into his wheelchair. She was ready to give up hope up – accepting their fate; however, Tripod had other plans.

“Tripod kept pulling on my gown getting me out and I said, ‘honey, please go on, go on,’ and she wouldn’t do it,” said the elderly woman. “She stayed right with me the entire time.”

Thanks to Tripod, her owners found the encouragement they needed to make it out unscathed -- a miraculous feat since the fire started in the couple’s bedroom.

The Smiths were the ones doing the saving last year when Tripod’s original owner was on the way to the pound with her.

“I said, ‘yes, bring her to me,’ ” said Mrs. Smith, who took her to a vet three days later.

The couple was concerned about Tripod’s front right leg, since she would not walk on it. While the vet said the leg could be re-broken to correct an old injury, “but as old as she is, to let it alone. She gets along just fine without it, so just let her live a happy life.”

It’s evident a happy life is what Tripod has. Her bum leg cannot keep her from jumping with delight to steal kisses and affection from the Smiths.

Now because of one another, Tripod, Mary and John will have the chance to keep enjoying each other’s love for a long time to come.

But for as beautiful as they all are together, puppy love won’t be enough for the Smiths to rebuild. They moved into their home only six months ago and didn’t have a homeowner’s insurance policy.

A relief fund has been set up with Citizen’s Bank and donations can be made at any local branch.

As for Tripod, she was treated to a day at the spa, complete with a pedicure and an oil rub down, by a Batesville dog groomer for her bravery.

WOW!!! amazing. I just don't understand how an angel such as this almost ended up in the shelter. I am so happy to hear, that the family is staying together. Its funny how when something is wrong, they know and will do some amazing things to save those in which they love.

Hoo Ray for Tripod. What a brave dog.

I've read a lot of similar stories of dogs saving their owners from a fire. However, most end with the dogs having to go to the shelter because the family they saved have nowhere to go. I'm so glad that Tripod is going to be staying with her family - right where she belongs. I hope they get enough donations to get back on their feet again soon.

What a great story, except for the people losing everything. Just another reason we should value and treat our pets as they in turn treat us. Glad everyone is safe.

I have learned over the years that when my dog is acting funny, something is wrong. They are very intuitive and loving. These people and this dog seem to adore each other.

It is a true "miracle" that the disabled couple took this Rat Terrier into their care, in it's time of desprate need, short of being "put to sleep". Then to have their baby save them from death. I have to change that from a miracle, to a double miracle. God Bless the couple and the rat terrier, but I think he has already done so. I write this with tears in my, eyes.

This is proof that an animal is more than just an animal, it is part of the family and it cares deeply for those who care and love it. This is a great story. I am glad that everyone is okay.

This story is wonderful. This just shows you that no matter if a pet is injured or is old, it still can't be loyal and loveable. This three-legged dog is a hero in every way. Adopt animals out of pounds, no matter whats wrong with them they need a home too. How would you feel if you were all alone in a cold an uncomfortable cage day and night watching other younger, maybe prettier animals get adopted while you stay there and wimper, or wagg you tail hoping they pick you. dogs are extremely loyal and it shows you that they have true emotions and feelings. If dogs didn't have feelings this dog would have simply fled after it smelled the smoke.
Must love dogs <3

You will never in a million yrs find animal more loyal than your dog. I'm convinced dogs know when they have been rescued and giving a second chance. Tripod knew how much this couple loved him and he wasn't going to let anything happen to them. Way to go TRIPOD!!!

I saved a dog that was on the side of the road. 'cash' was a border collie mix and had a long brokenen leg. I took the pup to the vet who said it was I who must make the call 9even though it was not my dog) whether to put him down or amputate (and pay 900 dollars) the leg. after looking into this dogs eyes, I said amputate. we took him home for a temporary period until I could find him a home and he was the most loyal dog. you could see the love in his eyes..seriously and the gratitude. I found a home for him and can only hope that he is still happy after all these years. oh...and his front leg was taken and they get around just fine:):):)
