Three-legged Dog Saves Couple from Fire

Browse News

INDEPENDENCE COUNTY, Ark. -– Saved from going to an Arkansas pound last year, a crippled, three-legged rat terrier had the chance to return the favor to her new owners last week.

Five-year old Tripod was sleeping in the bed with John and Mary Smith when a fire broke out in their home.

She is being credited as the reason why the disabled couple found the strength to make it out of the home.

“I can’t just say, she’s my angel,” said Mary Smith, overwhelmed with emotion of the tiny dog’s heroics.

With their blankets already on fire, Tripod urged the couple to hurry. But Mary was overwhelmed with the task of getting herself mobile, plus her husband into his wheelchair. She was ready to give up hope up – accepting their fate; however, Tripod had other plans.

“Tripod kept pulling on my gown getting me out and I said, ‘honey, please go on, go on,’ and she wouldn’t do it,” said the elderly woman. “She stayed right with me the entire time.”

Thanks to Tripod, her owners found the encouragement they needed to make it out unscathed -- a miraculous feat since the fire started in the couple’s bedroom.

The Smiths were the ones doing the saving last year when Tripod’s original owner was on the way to the pound with her.

“I said, ‘yes, bring her to me,’ ” said Mrs. Smith, who took her to a vet three days later.

The couple was concerned about Tripod’s front right leg, since she would not walk on it. While the vet said the leg could be re-broken to correct an old injury, “but as old as she is, to let it alone. She gets along just fine without it, so just let her live a happy life.”

It’s evident a happy life is what Tripod has. Her bum leg cannot keep her from jumping with delight to steal kisses and affection from the Smiths.

Now because of one another, Tripod, Mary and John will have the chance to keep enjoying each other’s love for a long time to come.

But for as beautiful as they all are together, puppy love won’t be enough for the Smiths to rebuild. They moved into their home only six months ago and didn’t have a homeowner’s insurance policy.

A relief fund has been set up with Citizen’s Bank and donations can be made at any local branch.

As for Tripod, she was treated to a day at the spa, complete with a pedicure and an oil rub down, by a Batesville dog groomer for her bravery.

What a great story! They saved Tripod, and then Tripod returned the favor! This shows you how much animals can love their human parents, since Tripod wouldn't leave without them. What a fantastic dog!!!

Oh that name, Tripod, is just too cute! They sound like such a happy family. I am glad that nobody was hurt in the fire and that they all made it out alright.

I first must say, how cute a name for this little dog! Very appropriate. This is amazing, how many times an animal will be the saviour of his family. You know they just realize "I don't want to lose my home and loved ones who protect and love me"!

our shelter had a 3 legged dog, Molly who got around just fine. She was such a sweetie and a great family looked past her disability and saw her beautiful heart. She is now a much loved member of their family.

It is nice that your shelter worked to find a family for this dog. I am afraid that some "pounds" would have put down a disabled dog. This story shows just how much love a handicapped dog can still give to a family.

Yes, it shows that there is really a home for every dog, if you are willing to work hard enough to look for and find it. Good job at your shelter.

An incredible story. It brought tears to my eyes. Animals can do miraculous things. Here this couple saved Tripod and she returned the favor. Had they not been able to leave Tripod probably would have stayed with them until the end. But fortunately this story has an even happier ending and she can stay with her people for many years to come. Thanks to Tripod's bravery many people are hearing about the fire and this couple will get a new home soon, I'm sure.

I meant to add that disabled is a bad choice of words. The couple had the ability to love the dog and the dog had the ability to save them.

How cute. So many times you hear of animals saving the lives of their owners by alerting them. But little Tripod went beyond that. I am so glad they didn't give up and that Tripod stayed determined to get them out of there.
I wish them the best!

What a great story, I hope Tripod enjoyed the spa but I think just being with them is reward enough! They never seem to think loosing a leg is a handicap.
Happily ever after, I love stories like this.

darn it another zootoo story that brings me to tears in class (probably should be paying attention anyway, serves me right). what a beautiful story, i'm glad that the dog didn't get out and everyone made it out alright. i'm sure it was terrifying having to try to get out with a disabled partner and such. what a blessing that dog turned out to be (but we know that all dogs are a blessing).
