The Skinny Pig

Browse News

In the seventies, scientists developed a breed of guinea pig that they used for dermatological testing.

In recent years, the breed has become yet another popular designer pet.

The strange new rodent doesn't have any hair.

That's right, except for small tufts on the nose and feet, the skinny pig looks more like a ball of loose skin than the furry version of its former self.

But regardless of their odd appearance, pet lovers are still giving the little pudge balls a place to stay. In fact, some human companions are willing to spend up to $300 for the little buggers. The furry versions go for about $20 bucks.

Oddly enough, hairless guinea pigs eat three times as much as the traditional breed. And while their behavior is the same, they do need a bit of suntan lotion in the summer – that is if their cages are anywhere near direct sunlight.

Thankfully, the critters are no longer used for testing. A few years ago, the scientific community handed them over to breeders, who cross bred them with their hairy cohorts to improve their immune systems.

You may have seen our story “Tiny the Toyger.” Well, after seeing this little guy and the fashionable feline, we've decided to create a wall of new breeds. Guys, let's add the Skinny Pig.

unfortunatly g pigs are also used as snake food. a good pet store will not sell the as food because they don't repoduce like mice and rats. g pigs have one or two babies at a time

Wow, those things are weird looking! I saw 2 of them at a pet store near me and I almost jumped back when I saw them: "What the heck are those things?!"

I rescued one once and he was much better than standard guinea pigs, but he only grew to about one third their size and died at 3 years old. I am over joyed hearing the testing has stopped! :)

Very odd little critters. I've never had a guinea pig so I don't really know much about the care of them.

I happen to love guinea pigs but don't like hairless ones. Still it is nice that many people own them as pets.

They're adorable. Since they've already been created, I say we accept them. What are we going to do, kill them? I bet they'd make good pets for people with allergies.

Absurd!!! Why do people mess with nature like this?? Geez, why not clone a few just in case we need them later on?? Save all the mess of breeding them again.

Why are we always messing around with nature? This is ridiculous-this is how so many breeds are ruined and why there are so many problems today.

I am so against genetic intervention. Let nature take it's own course and let the animals evolve as seen fit by nature, not people.

They are cute but it testing stinks. I hate animal testing for anything and now I'm sure that cross breeding could be helping get them back up in their immune systems but it's not always a good thing. Alot of times cross breeding causes internal problems down the line. And handing these animals out like little toys isn't good, they need to be properly cared for and sometimes the people with the money to buy them aren't the people willing to put in the time or effort to take care of them.

This story is disturbing on many levels. From the fact that this poor little animal was scientifically "created" for the sole purpose of experimentation to the fact that it's now being bred as a "designer" pet. This is a serious level of tampering with nature. Manmade "recipes" like this are unconscionable. Imagine all the other things these wierd scientific minds have created that we don't yet know about - some we never will.

Stop messing with Mother Nature! The hairless gp lacks its natural insulation and protection. Regular guinea pigs are wonderful animals naturally-- don't create freaks of nature-- literally!

Hairless animals need special care and I worry that the novelty of this sweet little animal will end up causing it to be ruined by people who are buying out of curiosity and not love.

It's actually kind of cute....but I don't agree with breeding more animals...there are plenty in shelters who need homes....Plus, when people go out and buy an animal just because it is a new trend or what not--it doesn't tend to end well. An awful lot of people don't know how to take responsibility for a pet.

What a weird creation. I would not want a hairless guinea pig. That's like having a hairless cat. I find it pretty freaky but if that's your type of thing then go for it.

Animal testing should be banned period. This is another example of what happens when you tamper with nature. I wouldn't want to own one. Who knows what their altered state could cause them to do. It's pretty scary.

I would not pay 300 for a hairy or hairless mouse and for that matter would not pay that for any animal when there are so many in need in shelters. But it takes a lot of different people to make the world spin and if you didn't know that before, you sure will learn that by spending any time on zootoo news.
