Teens Target Zoo Animals with Pellet Guns

PHILADELPHIA – After shooting two zoo animals with Airsoft brand pellet guns, two New Jersey teens were arrested Sunday afternoon at the Cohanzick Zoo in Bridgeton.

According to zoo officials, witnesses watched a 17-year-old from Vineland, N.J., and a 14-year-old from Bridgeton, N.J., shoot at a rare white Bengal tiger and an Asiatic black bear.

The teenagers, charged with shooting exotic animals, were held overnight at a juvenile detention center and were released to their parents on Monday.

Cumberland County’s First Assistant Prosecutor Kenneth Pagliughi said the minors were charged with multiple weapon counts, while the SPCA charged each boy with counts of tormenting an animal.

The 11-year old tiger, Ganesha, and 12-year-old bear, Holly, were targeted after the boys allegedly scaled a fence to shoot the animals with Airsoft hard-pellet guns, said Bev Greco, director of the Cumberland County SPCA. Neither animal was seriously injured.

Responding police apprehended the two boys on a road leading out of the zoo.

Greco reported that as officers approached, one boy dropped his gun, both of which looked realistic.

“This could have ended in a very, very bad,” said Greco, who went on to reference an incident that occurred at the San Francisco Zoo.

“Two teens were mauled and another killed after tormenting a tiger. In addition these Airsoft guns could have been mistaken for the real thing by the police.”

Two hard plastic pellets were found in the tiger exhibit and three in the bear’s compound by Kelly Shaw, the zoo’s animal curator.

“Thankfully, the animals had no evidence of trauma,” Shaw said.

That's cruel. These teens should serve community service at the zoo for what they did. Animal cruelty makes me sick.

I am always wondering if when we were kids things like this went through our minds. I just don't recall such vicousness when growing up. It seems that kids and adults alike are part of a hugely ( not sure if that is correct wording)growing population ...ANIMAL ABUSERS.
When did society become so damn callous, hateful and plain old ugly.
I hope the justice system will see that they must start punishing people severly when animal abuse happens. It is a horrible thing to know people can find pleasure in hurting an animal.

It is bad enough the animals have to endure us ooing and ahhhing at them all day, now they have to be shot with pellet guns? People seriously need to have harsh penalties applied when this happens.

Stupid kids! They should be punished harshly. Perhaps cleaning up bear poo for a year or so would do it.

The boys should be required to do community service work in the zoo among other penalties. Maybe spend a day seeing how the animals are cared for and cleaning up after the people.

Are these kids stupid or what? Did they not hear the story of the people in California who were mauled by the tiger after antagonizing him? Animals in zoos must be respected - they are wild animals.

I agree with a comment from another posting - I think the boys should be sentenced to 1000 hours of communtiy service at the Zoo and Local animal shelters. Maybe they would then have a better understanding of animals and their needs. Luckily no one got hurt, it could have turned out very bad.

And I suppose if these animals had broken out of their pens and mauled these kids then their parents would have slapped a huge lawsuit on them???? These kids need their fanny's blistered beyond belief!!!!! NO COMMON SENSE!!!

This is very bad news. What scares me the most is that cruelty to animals is a sign of worse things to come. I hope the kids are punished in a way that will help them deal with whatever pushed them to do this.

These kinds of stories anger me to the core! Both boys are old enough to know better. These are cruel acts and demands sever punishment and counseling. I have
to remember that there are a balance of good teens as well as these kids who just
want to destroy and hurt.

Yes, they do know better. Therefore, I think they should be prosecuted as adults rather than as minors.

Our zoos will now need to have guards to protect the animals? How sad for
all of us that it might come to that. This boys really need something to do, so
I'm hoping the judge finds them something to do to keep them busy for quite
awhile.

Kids these days don't understand the consequence of their actions. I think the best way to make the kids understand is to educate them about what harm they could have done to the animals and what the animals could have done to them. Their punishment shouldn’t be a fine but community service at the zoo.

I don't think they should get fines. It would just be punishing thier parents, who would be the ones responisble for paying them in the end.
No, they should get comunity service. They should have to pick up litter, naked, in the middle of a paintball range. Yeah, that sounds about right.
