Teens Lobby for Tougher Dog Fighting Penalties

PORTLAND – Two Oregon teens have taken their concerns about dog fighting straight to lawmakers.

Malik Taylor and Darrenn Robertson were tasked by a teacher to do something to change the world. They decided to take on dog fighting, which they first learned about following the Michael Vick case.

The star football player had been the teens’ idol. Taylor says he used to have a poster of the star athlete above his bed. It’s since been taken down.

“I heard it and I was devastated,” said Taylor. “He was my role model.”

“He wasn’t the person I thought he was,” said Robertson.

Thirteen year-old Taylor and 14 year-old Robertson headed to the state house, where they took lawmakers head on. Their aim was to change state law. Their testimony showed just how devastating Vick’s participation in the blood sport has been.

“The first thing that got us interested in this was the Michael Vick case, (because) he was a role model for us growing up,” Robertson told the legislative panel.

The pair went on to ask the legislators to make penalties for dog fighting more severe.

The bill they were lobbying for has already passed through Oregon’s senate now only needs house approval before going to the governor’s desk.

The bill, SB 1072, could increase the penalty for watching a dog fight or owning training equipment to a felony. Fines would increase from $250 to $125,000, and carry a five year prison sentence.

Both the teens’ parents said they are proud of their sons for taking the project beyond the classroom. Robertson’s mother said she expected the whole thing to end with the final grade.

As for their former role model, Taylor and Robertson are moving on, and becoming role models themselves.

“Just because Michael Vick does it doesn’t mean you have to do it,” said Taylor. “You don’t have to follow people.”

I am Darrenn Robertson's Great Aunt Trena; His Granmother is my sister;
I am so proud of this young man. He at such a young age is showing such maturity and humanity. I am quite confidant that he will continue to be a leader and a good citizen in his community. He and his partner Milik Taylor are what the future generations will need and be. Thank You God and Thank You Teachers.
Keep up the fight and good word Darren, I am proud and humbled by your insight and hope. I Love You and Miss You.

I just wanted to say thank you to all of you that have supported these boys. I am the mother of Darrenn and I know that he was devastated by the whole Michael Vick scenerio. I have raised Darrenn on my own for 14 years and have tried my best to raise him to follow his heart and do what is right. As a single mom it is heart breaking to watch your child be so influenced by a professional althete and then one of your sons role models crush him. It is hard enough with peer presure these days and for alot of youth they want to grow up and be just like their role model. But I am SOOOOOOOO Proud of Darrenn I could not of asked for anything better. He does have another role model that I hope will not let him down. His other role model is Steve Nash from the Phoenix Suns, I know that Nash has good in his heart Darrenn pointed out that while him and Malik were at the state captial fighting for this bill Steve Nash was in New Oreleans helping Katrina vicitims. Thank you all for you kudos and support for the boys. They are looking into doing bigger things hopefully federal. Thank you all.

I'm Darrenn's Aunt Beverly, his grandma is my sister. I am so very proud of Darrenn! Life hasn't been easy for Darrenn, and to see what a fine and wonderful young man he is becoming, makes me so thankful that he is a part of our family!
It's not easy to stand up for something, especially when it isn't popular to do so.
His actions show great character, and strength. Keep up the good work Darrenn!
We Love You! Aunt Beverly XO

This gives me hope for the youth today. At a time when you are usually reading about what they are doing that is wrong - it is refreshing to see them lead the way in doing what is right. Let's follow their example

This has to be one of the best stories I've read, for a couple of reasons. First these boys deserve a gold star for picking this subject. I think so much of our youth needs to be taught about animal cruelty and what people are doing and need to know it isn't right. Second, that they were so determined, and held such strong beliefs in this that they took it to the lawmakers.
Kudos to these two boys - what an accomplishment! They (and their parents) should be very proud!

I am glad these teens are doing something positive. I know some teens and young adults who felt if Michael Vick did something it was okay. I am glad these teens had a different reaction.

These young men will go far in life. The Vick case is just another example of how horrible and cruel some people can be. I commend these guys for recognizing how wrong this was and working to make sure it doesn't happen again. Way to go!

How nice to hear something positive coming out of this. What that football star did was shameful and sick. These boys are the real stars for stepping up. They're my heroes.

Way to go boys! Parents and teachers must be doing a good job instilling the right kind of values.

It is very refreshing to see two young men who obviously have taken on a very adult task use this to help animals. I wish that someday we can educate the world how wrong it is to pit animal against animal. It seems like we as human beings do it and we just have to have our animals do it too. Too bad.

All the publicity in the Michael Vick case is causing some good to come from bad. These boys will always remember how they turned being disillusioned by their former hero to promoting this cause against animal cruelty. Kudos to both of them!

These kids are such an inspiration to kids around the country, athletes and everyday people. Thousands of people adored Michael Vick for what he did on the football field, but what he did off of it... there is no excuse. These kids are really making a difference!

I truly believe it all has to do with the way you're raised-I'm sure they were brought up in loving homes with supportive parents, the people who are harming the animals usually come from less loving and compassionate homes.

michael vicks actually helped out. because of his inhumane actions through these boys something good will come out or it. OH! do you think they could put vicks in a pen with some of the dogs he mistreated. oh, that won't work because dogs forgive and would show forgiveness!
