Survey Shows Over 300 Pets Died From Contaminated Pet Food

MICHIGAN – A recent survey shows that last springs pet food scare took the lives of over 300 pets.

Conducted by Michigan State University and the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians, the study found that over 300 cats and dogs died after eating foods containing a deadly cocktail of chemical additives.

When separated, melamin, cyanuric acid, ammelide and ammeline are all harmless. But when mixed, the compound can form crystals that block the kidneys, the report says.

Smaller animals like cats and small breed dogs are especially susceptible – since it requires much less blockage to cause an issue.

Survey data was compiled from vets, vet technicians and pathologists from April 5 to June 6th. It revealed that 347 animals suffered from what's being termed as “pet food-induced nephrotoxicity.”

Proportionally speaking, the contaminated food killed over 300 dogs and cats – dogs suffered more by proportion.

Researchers say that since the recall, there don't seem to be any more cases of nephrotoxicity showing up – and with China's pet food suppliers now on lock-down, there shouldn't be any cases of contaminated pet food anytime soon.

My pup underwent painful bladder surgery for stones and I so wonder if it was because of his food... He's now on prescription food which costs a lot but so far it's working. I'd gladly pay for the prescription food with out complaint but upon opening a can of the diet, there was a ball bearing--obviously from something in the process machine. I emailed the company and they didnt even respond.... A little worrisome, I think!!!

300 is a huge number of animals! Very sad. If it was people it would have gotten a lot more attention. They really need to do something to prevent this from happening again.

We will never get an accurate number of how many of our pets lives were taken from this incident. It is something that needs to be taken very seriously.

Our pets are our babies. To those that lost their companions it was no different than losing a child. So very sad.

Just know where your pet foods are made. Don't buy imported. Buy American.

This was a terrible thing! We own trucks that haul the products animal food is made from. Fortunately none of the ingredients we haul are imported. I like that fact! I still made my dogs food during all of the recalls just to be sure! It is sad when you can't trust that your pets food is safe.

I remember very clearly what it was like going through the grocery store trying to determine what was safe and what was potentially dangerous. Everytime a news story came on or another manufacturer was mentioned I would go through the boxes of Shadow's treats wondering if I might have poisoned her. For one animal to have died because of such disregard is too much. I hope that all who were involved are taken to task and given the maximum punishment allowed.

What a useless thing to happen. All the loving pets that were lost, the sorrow to the owners, and why? Because people don't care enough to carefully monitor what they sell. Just get the fast dollar and run.

Can you imagine, if this is going on with our pets food, hey how about any food or products for humans. People wake up here, take a look at what is going on. God bless these pets.

We certainly made a deal with the devil when we decided to turn our manufacturing base over to places like China!! The animals have suffered as a result ~ and what is in edible things arriving from China for human consumption?

I feel very sorry for all those who lost pets. I am sure they in some way blame themself as they selected the food there pets received. I hope we learned some thing from this so it doesn't happen again.

I feel so sad for the families that lost their loved ones. This recall made me lose trust in some of the products I gave my pets. I read the labels on their products now more than I do for myself.

Its sad this had to happen. Tighter restrictions should have been put in place soon. I wonder how much of this food would have been boughten if people had known it came from china.

My dogs used to eat one of the products that were on the list. I got a feeling that it wasn't good for them, so I switched. If I had not switch my dog or dogs could have died.

My dogs are my family and I would flip if something happened to them. I bet there were more than 300 that have died but the deaths were not attributed to the pet food. When this story broke last year I dumped anything for my girls that said Wheat glutten in the ingredient and I started reading labels and buying natural products. Nothing is to good for my girls!

Seems that China is always on the list of recalls. They don't care about human life let alone a animals. This is a disgrace that all these animals had to die for them to save a buck. People don't realize how important our pets our to us and that they are like our children. They need to be punished for this!

It's scary how irresponsible these companies are - not only for pet products but for human products as well. Unfortunately, it's all about making products as cheaply as possible no matter what the consequences.
