Study Finds Mix-Breeds Smarter than Pure-breeds

UNITED KINGDOM – A study performed by researchers at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland found that mixed-breed dogs are smarter than their pure-bred cousins.

Scientists say mutts' spatial awareness and problem solving skills surpass that of pure breeds. They studied 30 dogs of pure and mixed breeds.

On a scale from 1-30, 30 being the smart end, crossbreeds averaged 20, while purebreds averaged 18. In the end, seven of the top 10 dogs were mix-bred.

Among the tests, one studied how the dogs reacted when given a bone covered in foil. If they figured out the treat was inside, points were awarded.

And like so many lab mice, the pups had to make their way through a maze.

According to The Daily Mail, a collie-spaniel mix named Jet aced the tests, scoring a 30.

Researcher Dr. David Smith said it'd be wise for police units to consider mixed-breeds for their K-9 units. German shepherds, the most common breed of police dog, are known for their intelligence. But Smith says a German shepherd-Rottweiler-mix would be just as smart.

A disadvantage of bred dogs is their genetic affinity to health issues. Inbreeding leads to common problems; German shepherds, for example, are known for having hip problems. Many K-9 officers have to retire early because of such issues.

But for other animal services, like seeing-eye-dogs, intelligence is a must. The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association says 45 percent of the dogs it trains are mixes. Of those, 80 percent complete their training. Of the breeds they train, only 65 percent become service dogs.

I'm all for mutts, 200%, but isn't it illogical to say that purebred dogs have certain inherited characteristics (such as pit bulls being "vicious by nature" rather than irresponsible owners) as a general group and then try to say that mutts, by their nature each individuals breed-wise, are also generally smarter than the purebreds? Because if pits can/can't be generalized by breed, then neither can/can't mutts!

I thought this was known for years. I am glad that the study backs up this thought. Maybe more people will look to adopt.

Interesting and possible but I think more testing should be done before saying this is a sure thing.

it does depend on the individual. some dogs are just smarter than others just like other species. hybrid vigor does usually win out for many survival characteristics.

We have a bichon frisse who happens to be a very smart dog. We also have a mixed lab who is very smart. In my opinion it depends on the animals not the fact that they are a mixed breed or not.

It's interesting that this study came out. I had a friend with dobermans, and though they're wonderful dogs, they're one of the stupidest dogs I've met (in a nice way though). My dog growing up was a Heinz 57, and a very smart dog. You could see it in his eyes. But not in the dobie's eyes. Big difference!

Would it not be possible for soom dogs, in general, to be smarter than other dogs. Are we so sure that all mix breeds are smarter--I don't think we should lump all dog into two categories

This is very interesting but I don't think that this is neccessarily true. All dogs are very intellingent and it doesn't matter their breed.

The intelligence only matters when it comes to service animals. Still, it's a good thing to know because there is so much investment when it comes to training one for service. But a pet can just be her or himself and that's enough.

Maybe not a fair test but I am in process of training my 5 dogs to my 20 acres of invisible fencing. 4 are mutts and 1 is a setter. The setter has been the slowest to figure out what the flags mean. Now I know setters are not known to be the brightest but he is the only one with papers. He's a gem of a dog but not the brightest bulb in the room. BUT we love him.

I have only mixed breed dogs. I've had a pure bred dog in the past, but couldn't house break her. My mutts are very intelligent. One can open the doors of the house to let himself out (more difficult) or in which is a breeze! He does tricks and even knows to unmake the bed before he lays in it which I hate! He is smart though! The foil wrapped bone would be simple for him!

Good question. I think there are still lots of people that want some type of dog or breed of dog rather than the right dog for them. There's a big difference. I often counsel people that think they want a particular breed whose lifestyle is in no way consistent with that breed. They want a look.

Good for our mutts! It is fact that mixed breeds tend to be healthier than pure breeds. Now we know they are smarter too. Adopt from your local shelter. Put breeders out of business. No more puppy mills

Yay!!! I agree with CarolaMc - adopt a shelter dog. My local shelter even has the saying that shelter pups are "one of a kind designer dogs." That's way better than the new ones being BRED into mutts to score a buck from the trend-loving public.

This makes absolute sense to me when you consider the inbreeding that was done initially for show traits etc. Remember the pointed slim narrow head that was admired on the Doberman and the broader head of the gentler kinder Doberman of today?

No study was needed to know that mutts are smarter than pure breds. They of course take after their owners. Mutts rule!

Eh, researchers, they'll tell us the opposite tomorrow after another study. Some of the numbers aren't really all that dramatic in this report to show a big difference one way or another. I have had some smart mixed pups and some smart purebreds from rescues...they are all smart and unique in their own way.

I totally agree - I have owned both pure bred and mixed and the more the mix the smarter the dog. As my husband says "you can see the little wheels turning" in our pure bred we just got a happy look but no wheel turning.

I've had the pleasure of sharing my life with four lovable, wonderful mutts. Currently, two purebred German Shepherds are allowing me to enjoy their company! Although I cherished and cherish all six dogs, the German Shepherds are FAR more intelligent than the other four.

I agree with this. I have always said that my mutt is the smartest dog alive. ha ha ha He knows everything. I feel that some pure breeds are more high strung. It may not be that they are dumb. I'm the type who loves a dog, not there breed.

They could have saved their funding for this testing. Anyone who has ever had a mutt already knows how the testing would go. Mutts are the best. Visit your local shelter and find out for yourself.
