Stray Pit Bull Saves Woman, Child from Attacker

Browse News

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The wandering 65-pound Pit Bull mix might have seemed menacing to some passerby, but one woman will always remember him as her "guardian angel."

The dog, which authorities think is lost and not a stray, successfully thwarted a robbery attack on a mother and her 2-year-old son, who were held at knifepoint Monday afternoon.

The Florida woman, who has been identified by authorities simply as "Angela," was leaving a playground with her toddler son in Port Charlotte when a man approached her in the parking lot with a knife and told her not to make any noise or sudden movements.

Angela didn't have to do either to protect herself and her child -- a dog mysteriously ran to the scene and charged the man, who quickly fled.

"I don't think the dog physically attacked the man, but he went at him and was showing signs of aggression, just baring his teeth and growling and barking. It was clear he was trying to defend this woman," Animal Control Lt. Brian Jones told Pet Pulse.

"I don't know what this man's intentions were, but it is very possible this dog saved her life."

The exceptional part of the story, Jones said, is that the dog had never met or even seen the people it quickly jumped to defend.

"You hear about family dogs protecting their owners, but this dog had nothing to do with this woman or her kid," Jones said. "He was like her guardian angel."

After the alleged thief ran away, Angela quickly placed her son, Jordan, in the car and tried to drive off. Before she could, though, the dog jumped into her backseat, waiting with her for the police and animal control officers to arrive at the scene.

The dog was transported to a local shelter and if his owners don't step forward within five days, Jones said, Angela and her family plan to adopt the savior she named "Angel."

Animal control officers and shelter workers believe Angel is lost, and not a stray, because of his good health, sturdy weight and mild temperament.

"It's funny, that someone's irresponsibility could have saved someone's life," Jones said of Angel's possible owners.

For Angela, it doesn't matter where the dog came from, just that he was there when she needed him most.

"I don't know what his [the thief's] intentions were -- I don't know why he did it, but I'm glad that -- we call him Angel -- I'm glad that Angel showed up because I don't know what would have happened," Angela told NBC2 News.

For a small town with a population of 46,452, animal control officers were kept busy Monday afternoon. Jones says they department also responded to a report about a boa constrictor in a church parking lot.

The snake found its way into a car engine and was able to be removed without being harmed. It took three people to move the massive, seemingly random placed snake.

"It's funny, because we aren't a big place," he said of the Gulf Coast town. "And we can go for four or five months without the media contacting us about a story. It's been a busy week."

Officers from the responding county sheriff's office canvased the area and were unable to locate the suspect described as being in his 20s, tall and dark haired.

Thats amazing. Most of the time pits or mix pits can sometimes go towards children. Hope they really check into that before they bring this breed into the house, although I do hope someone will give Angel a good home.

God even works through pit bulls to fulfill His purpose here on earth. All of us are a part of the Supreme Being, including every single animal. This is a very inspiring story and I hope we will be able to hear about a followup to see if Angela adopted the dog.

Perhaps the dog had a woman and child in his life before. This story brought tears to my eyes. It is so rare to hear a news story positively portraying a pit or pit mix, and this one is so touching. I hope we get a follow up story and find out if Angela and her family end up adopting Angel!

Wow. This really shows how nice and caring pit bulls can be. They just get stuck with the wrong owners who treat them horrible and train them to fight. Most of the time it isn't even their fault. Heartwarming story.

Oops...There is a typo in my comment, I meant to write that pit bulls are NOT "bad" (people sometimes train them to be that way)...

What a heart-warming story, and it helps people to realize that pit bulls are "bad" they are trained sometimes to be that way...This story has a happy ending! :)

This is a special story. A guardian angel in dog form. I'm glad that she'll adopt the dog if his owner doesn't show up.

It's what I've always believed about "pit bulls". It's not the breed of dog that's "bad and aggressive" it's the owner that makes it that way. Some breeds tend to be more aggressive than others, but they just need training that all responsible owners of these breeds give them. I'll bet you could make a golden mean and aggressive if "trained" properly. I hope the dog's owners are found because they are missing a very loving and devoted pet. If not, at least Angel will have a good home with Angela. This story is a win-win for all.

It's about time a good story is told about a pit bull, instead of all the uneducated baloney we always hear.

A great story about a breed of dog that's sometimes wrongly discriminated against. It proves that a dog is a person's best friend--even of the dog is a stranger.

So sad that the positive stories never get covered. I was curious to see if this story had been picked up by any major news outlets, so I Googled it. Only NBC had the story, atwww.nbc-2.com, and nowhere in this article does the reporter mention the breed of dog.

Always good to hear good news about this breed. Great family pets and companions. Unfortunatly if this dog was runing loose in the city of Denver he would be dead by now. The mayor and city counsel members in 2005 enacted a brutal BSL policy that is directly responsible for the slaughering of over 1700 pit bulls or dogs that look like pits. Good family pets that have done nothing to deserve to die. They only had the great misfortune of being in Denver. Want an eye opener ? Go to roverlution.org and follow the links to Denver or go to denverkillsdogs.com. Don't travel through Denver if you have a Pit or a dog that looks like a pit. They have the right to confiscate your dog and kill him/her and you have no recourse. Who says your dog looks like a pit ? Any jack booted cop who doesn't like the way you walk, thats who. Not a vet or anyone qualified to determine said breed. Is this really America..not any longer. In Denver, if you have drugs or you rob a store or if you have a Pit Bull, your the same in the eyes of the law...yea, law, what a joke.

This is not surprising. Pit bulls and especially pit bull mixes can be some of the nicest doggies on the planet. Of course some cannot help their heritage, but the majority of them are just good all-around dogs - very smart and very loyal.

Too often we hear horror stories about Pit Bulls and how they've attached someone or something. And, quite frankly, it has them with a really bad reputation. It was surprising to come across this wonderful story. My daughter tells me quite often that all Pit Bulls are not mean. Now I can truly see it for myself by reading this story. Shame on those people who own Pitt Bulls and train them to fight. Because of that, more and more americans are being injured/killed due to the owner's selfishness and greed. They think about no one else but themselves and what they can gain from it.

This a unique story for sure. Not only did the dog protect her but tried to leave with her. Maybe he knew her somehow or maybe she reminded the dog of someone else. I hope this don't give people the idea that it is ok to let your dogs run.
