Stray Pit Bull Saves Woman, Child from Attacker

Browse News

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The wandering 65-pound Pit Bull mix might have seemed menacing to some passerby, but one woman will always remember him as her "guardian angel."

The dog, which authorities think is lost and not a stray, successfully thwarted a robbery attack on a mother and her 2-year-old son, who were held at knifepoint Monday afternoon.

The Florida woman, who has been identified by authorities simply as "Angela," was leaving a playground with her toddler son in Port Charlotte when a man approached her in the parking lot with a knife and told her not to make any noise or sudden movements.

Angela didn't have to do either to protect herself and her child -- a dog mysteriously ran to the scene and charged the man, who quickly fled.

"I don't think the dog physically attacked the man, but he went at him and was showing signs of aggression, just baring his teeth and growling and barking. It was clear he was trying to defend this woman," Animal Control Lt. Brian Jones told Pet Pulse.

"I don't know what this man's intentions were, but it is very possible this dog saved her life."

The exceptional part of the story, Jones said, is that the dog had never met or even seen the people it quickly jumped to defend.

"You hear about family dogs protecting their owners, but this dog had nothing to do with this woman or her kid," Jones said. "He was like her guardian angel."

After the alleged thief ran away, Angela quickly placed her son, Jordan, in the car and tried to drive off. Before she could, though, the dog jumped into her backseat, waiting with her for the police and animal control officers to arrive at the scene.

The dog was transported to a local shelter and if his owners don't step forward within five days, Jones said, Angela and her family plan to adopt the savior she named "Angel."

Animal control officers and shelter workers believe Angel is lost, and not a stray, because of his good health, sturdy weight and mild temperament.

"It's funny, that someone's irresponsibility could have saved someone's life," Jones said of Angel's possible owners.

For Angela, it doesn't matter where the dog came from, just that he was there when she needed him most.

"I don't know what his [the thief's] intentions were -- I don't know why he did it, but I'm glad that -- we call him Angel -- I'm glad that Angel showed up because I don't know what would have happened," Angela told NBC2 News.

For a small town with a population of 46,452, animal control officers were kept busy Monday afternoon. Jones says they department also responded to a report about a boa constrictor in a church parking lot.

The snake found its way into a car engine and was able to be removed without being harmed. It took three people to move the massive, seemingly random placed snake.

"It's funny, because we aren't a big place," he said of the Gulf Coast town. "And we can go for four or five months without the media contacting us about a story. It's been a busy week."

Officers from the responding county sheriff's office canvased the area and were unable to locate the suspect described as being in his 20s, tall and dark haired.

All pit bulls are not bad. Like everyone thinks. I feel this dog was probably lost and the owner of the pitbull was prob a female with a child and that was the first instinct of the dog was to defend the family. I never understood why people think that every pit bull is mean, its not the dog its how the owner raised it. I had a pit bull and he was the meanest dog on his 3/4 inch tow chain that was stretched out. but off the chain he was the sweetest dog ever. but he was just defending his owners.

NOT EVERY PITBULL IS MEAN!!!!

THIS dog "Angel" would have a seat at head of our Thanksgiving Dinner Table !! Not only does "Angel" exemplify what we humans "tout" as one of our "superiorities over animals" ( our exercise of reason and a willingness to help other humans in distress ) THIS "puppy" actually intervenes in the affairs of the "higher order" to set aright a situation between two humans !! Dare I suggest that dogs REALLY do have the capacity of reason and a sense of judgement ? I think so !!

Ironically, the perp in this matter will likely be yelling about how that animal intimidated him . . . in total disregard of his own "animal tendencies". Too bad "Angel" didn't get to give him one of those special PitBull "sweetiekisses" . . . . LOL

Hmph !! I hope the knife wielding predator gets a 70 sq. ft. kennel to live in for a while !!

[ Jail Standards require that a detainee has at least 70 square feet if held in a single occupancy cell. ]

I love pit bulls and am not surprised that he came to that womans rescue even though he didn't know them. Any animal can be trained to be mean and it's not their fault. But as soon as some one hears something good about a breed of dog that has specifically been trained to be vicious it really puts a positive outlook on that breed.

Don't bother to look for this article on MAINSTREAM MEDIA and use the word "pit bull". While THEY published the story the dog was said to be a "stray 65 lb dog". Mainsteam media's report is here: www.nbc-2.com

THIS hero, in mainstream media willl never get his reward. The only time you will find "pet bull" hero's is in dog blogs. What a sad state of affairs.

this is a great story. i love pit bulls, always have and always will. i think that this story needs to be out for more people to see and hear about, then maybe they would start to understand that it is not the dog, its usually the person who owns them that makes them bad!

You are right. They should have more positive stories told about them. Even Vick's dogs are wonderful now that they have had exposure to kindness and love...it isn't the dogs fault people abuse them.

great story !!!!! I did a search but I can seem to find this on mainstream
news media ??? Why ? When its bad news about a dog attack it makes the
news state to state. I can't even find this on Florida's local news on the web ?
Can anyone else find this ?

Interesting that the comment was made that someone's irresponsibility (read: owner allowed dog to wander loose) saved someone else's life. Perhaps the dog was temporarily loose due to no owner irresponsibility but just a genuine accident of some sort (like a service person didn't latch the gate well...). The WONDERFUL thing about the story is that a Pit Bull did something right and got media coverage for it. We all need to be careful about stereotyping breeds. Judge the individual dog (the deed) not the breed! Thanks for sharing this story, and thanks to the media for printing it! I hope the dog has a wonderful home!

I live in the community in which this happened and as a side note , what the story doesn't mention is that the Boa Constrictor was over 15 foot long. LOL , brings new meaning to checking the back seat of the car before you get in

I wish the term "Pit Bull" would be eradicated from our terminology and this animal could be referred to as the Terrier that it is. This animal has always had a bad rap but only because of sorry owners and lousy back-yard breeders. A dog, any dog, can be made mean with bad treatment.
The story of "Angel" should have made front page across the state as this is the norm for a well socialized and cared for pet. May this Angel of a dog always have a kind and loving home.
