Stray Pit Bull Saves Woman, Child from Attacker

Browse News

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The wandering 65-pound Pit Bull mix might have seemed menacing to some passerby, but one woman will always remember him as her "guardian angel."

The dog, which authorities think is lost and not a stray, successfully thwarted a robbery attack on a mother and her 2-year-old son, who were held at knifepoint Monday afternoon.

The Florida woman, who has been identified by authorities simply as "Angela," was leaving a playground with her toddler son in Port Charlotte when a man approached her in the parking lot with a knife and told her not to make any noise or sudden movements.

Angela didn't have to do either to protect herself and her child -- a dog mysteriously ran to the scene and charged the man, who quickly fled.

"I don't think the dog physically attacked the man, but he went at him and was showing signs of aggression, just baring his teeth and growling and barking. It was clear he was trying to defend this woman," Animal Control Lt. Brian Jones told Pet Pulse.

"I don't know what this man's intentions were, but it is very possible this dog saved her life."

The exceptional part of the story, Jones said, is that the dog had never met or even seen the people it quickly jumped to defend.

"You hear about family dogs protecting their owners, but this dog had nothing to do with this woman or her kid," Jones said. "He was like her guardian angel."

After the alleged thief ran away, Angela quickly placed her son, Jordan, in the car and tried to drive off. Before she could, though, the dog jumped into her backseat, waiting with her for the police and animal control officers to arrive at the scene.

The dog was transported to a local shelter and if his owners don't step forward within five days, Jones said, Angela and her family plan to adopt the savior she named "Angel."

Animal control officers and shelter workers believe Angel is lost, and not a stray, because of his good health, sturdy weight and mild temperament.

"It's funny, that someone's irresponsibility could have saved someone's life," Jones said of Angel's possible owners.

For Angela, it doesn't matter where the dog came from, just that he was there when she needed him most.

"I don't know what his [the thief's] intentions were -- I don't know why he did it, but I'm glad that -- we call him Angel -- I'm glad that Angel showed up because I don't know what would have happened," Angela told NBC2 News.

For a small town with a population of 46,452, animal control officers were kept busy Monday afternoon. Jones says they department also responded to a report about a boa constrictor in a church parking lot.

The snake found its way into a car engine and was able to be removed without being harmed. It took three people to move the massive, seemingly random placed snake.

"It's funny, because we aren't a big place," he said of the Gulf Coast town. "And we can go for four or five months without the media contacting us about a story. It's been a busy week."

Officers from the responding county sheriff's office canvased the area and were unable to locate the suspect described as being in his 20s, tall and dark haired.

It's nice to see that pit bulls are being recognized for more then just dog fighting. Many people are working hard to curve the belief that all pit bulls are aggressive. Yay for this pitt bull!

Angel was truly her "guardian angel." What a great story and how heartwarming the dog got in the back seat to sit and wait probably to assure they were safe. Maybe the dog was from a household that has a small child and to protect the child was its instinct. I hope they find Angel's owners because I'm sure she is well loved.

Nice to see something good for once for a pit.Would have been nicer to see it on front page news for this breed. Not all pits are bad and it's unfortunate that due to peoples ignorance there are so many being euthanized every hour of every day in every shelter.I wish Angel well.

Now why isn't the press picking this story as a headliner. Pits get such a bad rap, but they are great dogs! Behind every dog considered "bad" is a bad owner not a bad dog.

This should be a front page story on every newspaper throughout the US. It would show everyone that Pits can be and are good dogs. Thanks to the midwest rescue group for saving his life.

This is such a great story, I loved it!!! I hope they catch the suspect!!! It's amazing that "Angel" protected Angela and her son, even though Angel didn't know them! This is a great story to show people that Pit Bulls really aren't bad. It all depends on how you raise and treat the dog. What an awesome dog. Go Angel!!! :)

I wish these things would make national TV news. Most of us on here know what great dogs pits are, but in general, the media makes them out as monsters. Such a relief to read such an awesome story. Also... what a BEAUTIFUL dog!!!

Why on earth is this dog going to the Midwest, when the woman and child that it saved want to adopt him? This is not a happy ending. If they want the dog, they should be allowed to adopt the dog.

The woman never attempted to rescue Angel from the shelter. She just said that to the press to look good. Midwest Animal Rescue saved him from euthanization. Here is the link to his page:www.midwestanimalrescue.org

Amazing that animals, and this beautiful baby, knew who the "bad guys" were, and who to protect... and why. This is some dog. A heart-warming and animal-loving story. Thank you.

We always read stories of horrible pit bull attacks. It is nice to see one with a different spin. I've always been a big believer in that a dog's temperment has much more to do with how it is raised vs. what breed it is.

We're all saying good dog, and I agree that this is a wonderful story. But can I ask why a dog sees a man looking and thinks to become aggressive? I'm worried about what he sees at home to take that line.

Such a sweet story as an owner of a pit bull mix myself it brought tears to my eyes that finally someone sees what angels all animals are, and that a dog that can have such a bad reputation can be called an ANGEL! It's just so heartwarming! I hope this dog's owners are found or that this woman is able to adopt him! Such a wonderful story!!!

Why doesnt this story make the news? The news only reports stories if a pit bull bites someone. God forbid they should report a positive story. As a pitbull owner, I can only say good things about these dogs. There are no bad dogs, just bad people! This dog is a hero and should be treated as such! GO PIT BULLS!!!

It was wonderful to read a story written in a positive light on this breed. People so often over look "bad dogs" and forget that every dog has their own personality and are made with a generic cookie cutter.

This is an excellent story. I love to hear when Pits do good things and maybe from this their rep will get better. I hope that Angel's future home is wonderful if its not with the woman whom he saved.
