Stray Pit Bull Saves Woman, Child from Attacker

Browse News

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The wandering 65-pound Pit Bull mix might have seemed menacing to some passerby, but one woman will always remember him as her "guardian angel."

The dog, which authorities think is lost and not a stray, successfully thwarted a robbery attack on a mother and her 2-year-old son, who were held at knifepoint Monday afternoon.

The Florida woman, who has been identified by authorities simply as "Angela," was leaving a playground with her toddler son in Port Charlotte when a man approached her in the parking lot with a knife and told her not to make any noise or sudden movements.

Angela didn't have to do either to protect herself and her child -- a dog mysteriously ran to the scene and charged the man, who quickly fled.

"I don't think the dog physically attacked the man, but he went at him and was showing signs of aggression, just baring his teeth and growling and barking. It was clear he was trying to defend this woman," Animal Control Lt. Brian Jones told Pet Pulse.

"I don't know what this man's intentions were, but it is very possible this dog saved her life."

The exceptional part of the story, Jones said, is that the dog had never met or even seen the people it quickly jumped to defend.

"You hear about family dogs protecting their owners, but this dog had nothing to do with this woman or her kid," Jones said. "He was like her guardian angel."

After the alleged thief ran away, Angela quickly placed her son, Jordan, in the car and tried to drive off. Before she could, though, the dog jumped into her backseat, waiting with her for the police and animal control officers to arrive at the scene.

The dog was transported to a local shelter and if his owners don't step forward within five days, Jones said, Angela and her family plan to adopt the savior she named "Angel."

Animal control officers and shelter workers believe Angel is lost, and not a stray, because of his good health, sturdy weight and mild temperament.

"It's funny, that someone's irresponsibility could have saved someone's life," Jones said of Angel's possible owners.

For Angela, it doesn't matter where the dog came from, just that he was there when she needed him most.

"I don't know what his [the thief's] intentions were -- I don't know why he did it, but I'm glad that -- we call him Angel -- I'm glad that Angel showed up because I don't know what would have happened," Angela told NBC2 News.

For a small town with a population of 46,452, animal control officers were kept busy Monday afternoon. Jones says they department also responded to a report about a boa constrictor in a church parking lot.

The snake found its way into a car engine and was able to be removed without being harmed. It took three people to move the massive, seemingly random placed snake.

"It's funny, because we aren't a big place," he said of the Gulf Coast town. "And we can go for four or five months without the media contacting us about a story. It's been a busy week."

Officers from the responding county sheriff's office canvased the area and were unable to locate the suspect described as being in his 20s, tall and dark haired.

Isn't this amazing! And a Pitbull at that! You hear so many stories of these being killer dogs and you have this one.....that protects a woman and a small child! Makes you wonder about some of the stories you hear on the media. I think alot of times these dogs are mis-understood.

I'd like to hear updates about Angel.

This story needs to be front and center to counter all of the bad press.

Just more proof that a dog is what you make of him, pit bulls can be just as loving and protective as any other breed.

Pit bulls usually get a bad rap but if they are trained right and treated decent they are good pets. I hope they find the dog--and the robber.

I can't believe they actually publicized the article, and mentioned the dog's breed. Whoever wrote this in on the 'good' side.

I agree with other users--everyone is so upset about how bad pit bulls are, how agressive they are, and all that, because all they hear are the negative stories. It's amazing that this pit bull came to the rescue of complete strangers!

it is nice to finally see a positive article written about a pit bull.
It is not the pit bulls that have problems it is the people that raise them to be unfriendly.

I hope the owners of the pitbull are found. If they aren't, the woman and child he saved should adopt him...they owe him one.

FINALLY...the media airs just one of many good pitbull stories. All we ever hear is the horrible stuff. I think the media is partly responsible for the bad rap this breed gets. YAY for Angel. I hope this lady gets to adopt him. What a great story!!

The lady left him at the pound to get euthanized after she said she would adopt him if his family did not come forward. A rescue from Minnesota saved him.

He hasn't been adopted yet as far as I know. He is undergoing treatment for heartworm so may not be listed as up for adoption as yet. They also may have renamed him.

The woman that Angel defended never attempted to adopt him. She left him at the pound to be euthanized, and no one claimed him. A group of MN rescuers and rescuers in FL came together to save his life. He is currently at Midwest Animal Rescue. You can view his page atwww.midwestanimalrescue.org (type his name into the search box on the upper left side of this page).

i believe that it is all in the training of a "fighting" dog, like a pit bull. If the owners train them to be mild tempered, they can be some of the sweetest dogs. It is a good thing this dog was in the right place at the right time

This is an awesome story, and just reinforces the need to stop BSL and stop assuming all pits are aggressive. What more proof do we need? Dogs are very intuitive. This Angel deserves a medal for bravery. I'd love to know of the follow up, did the lady adopt him, or did his owners claim him? He sure doesn't deserve to be caged in a shelter after his act of heroism!

This goes to show that not all pit bulls aren't violent and aggressive. They're highly protective! I wonder if Angela ended up adopting Angel, or if someone else did. Either way, I hope she has a happy, health life w/ a loving family.

At last a nice story about a pit bull. I have to admit I am a little afraid of them and I know it's because of the horror stories so it helps to hear something good. There are cases of all breeds of dog being agressive and we need to educate people, like me, on the pit bull. Bless his heart and bless the family he helped.

i own a pit and know she would so the same for me.
the thing that angers me, the lady is full of crap.
she didn't even look into adopting him, and i am sure never intended to.
she totally said it to look good.
no wonder i hate humans so much!

I love this story so much. I have the honor of sharing my home with two of the sweetest, most loving pit bulls. Everyone is always saying, "What kind of dog do you have? Oh... a pit bull..." It doesn't matter the breed, if you treat your dogs right, and train them well, they will be good upstanding doggy citizens. I've heard people are trying to ban pit bulls from texas altogether. I hope that never happens.

Nice to hear a positive story about a pit bull. We all know that dogs are very intuitive about what people are up to. Their breed really gets a bum rap. If a pit bull is raised properly, it can make a loyal family pet. Hooray for Angel!
