Stray Pit Bull Saves Woman, Child from Attacker

Browse News

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The wandering 65-pound Pit Bull mix might have seemed menacing to some passerby, but one woman will always remember him as her "guardian angel."

The dog, which authorities think is lost and not a stray, successfully thwarted a robbery attack on a mother and her 2-year-old son, who were held at knifepoint Monday afternoon.

The Florida woman, who has been identified by authorities simply as "Angela," was leaving a playground with her toddler son in Port Charlotte when a man approached her in the parking lot with a knife and told her not to make any noise or sudden movements.

Angela didn't have to do either to protect herself and her child -- a dog mysteriously ran to the scene and charged the man, who quickly fled.

"I don't think the dog physically attacked the man, but he went at him and was showing signs of aggression, just baring his teeth and growling and barking. It was clear he was trying to defend this woman," Animal Control Lt. Brian Jones told Pet Pulse.

"I don't know what this man's intentions were, but it is very possible this dog saved her life."

The exceptional part of the story, Jones said, is that the dog had never met or even seen the people it quickly jumped to defend.

"You hear about family dogs protecting their owners, but this dog had nothing to do with this woman or her kid," Jones said. "He was like her guardian angel."

After the alleged thief ran away, Angela quickly placed her son, Jordan, in the car and tried to drive off. Before she could, though, the dog jumped into her backseat, waiting with her for the police and animal control officers to arrive at the scene.

The dog was transported to a local shelter and if his owners don't step forward within five days, Jones said, Angela and her family plan to adopt the savior she named "Angel."

Animal control officers and shelter workers believe Angel is lost, and not a stray, because of his good health, sturdy weight and mild temperament.

"It's funny, that someone's irresponsibility could have saved someone's life," Jones said of Angel's possible owners.

For Angela, it doesn't matter where the dog came from, just that he was there when she needed him most.

"I don't know what his [the thief's] intentions were -- I don't know why he did it, but I'm glad that -- we call him Angel -- I'm glad that Angel showed up because I don't know what would have happened," Angela told NBC2 News.

For a small town with a population of 46,452, animal control officers were kept busy Monday afternoon. Jones says they department also responded to a report about a boa constrictor in a church parking lot.

The snake found its way into a car engine and was able to be removed without being harmed. It took three people to move the massive, seemingly random placed snake.

"It's funny, because we aren't a big place," he said of the Gulf Coast town. "And we can go for four or five months without the media contacting us about a story. It's been a busy week."

Officers from the responding county sheriff's office canvased the area and were unable to locate the suspect described as being in his 20s, tall and dark haired.

i found this and wanted to post it.
I sent an email to my girlfriend about this story thinking that she would like to read it, as we have been looking for a rottweiler, another dog breed with a bad rap.

Well today she send me a text saying she found angel the dog. I find out that "angel" is at midwest animal rescue in Minneapolis Minnesota.

It reads as follows:

www.petfinder.com

Hello my name is Angel,
I'm on my way to MN to experience the love of the most kind hearted human who is looking for a loyal companion with more love to offer than anyone could ever imagine. My life was turned upside down until 11/12/08 when MARS saved me in the nick of time. I was recently stuck in a shelter on death row for 10days in Florida. I ended up there all because I saved the life of a woman and her two year old son! They were approached by a man threatening their lives at knife point while they were leaving a play ground. I happened to walk right in to this dangerous crime scene, while I was taking a stroll through the neighborhood without my parents. I knew that I had to act quickly and protect them so I charged toward him with all my might yelling at him in my scariest voice and he took off the other direction. I was afraid that he was going to hurt them so I did what any guy would do witnessing that kind of a dangerous situation.

I was so proud of myself for doing such a good deed, everyone kept telling me how good of a boy I was for springing into action it felt amazing to be so appreciated by everyone who surrounded me at that moment. After the coward ran away I jumped in the back seat of her car and waited for the police to come and make sure this woman and her little boy were going to be safe.

Then instead of her taking me home with her, she sent me with animal control. I could not believe it I was stuck in jail for being a hero, this was really confusing because I thought only bad guys go to jail not hero's. The lady I protected told the police that if my owners never came back to claim me that she would adopt me herself, but I never saw her again. I thought she would keep her word and she failed me, I was so crushed by her false promises to me. She even told the police that she felt like I was her guardian angel. Once again I was confused by this as well because angels are supposed to be special right ? The longer I waited for her to come back and save me the less special I felt, my glory turned into fear and sorrow. I'd seen so many dogs leaving their kennels and never coming back that it made me wonder when it was going to be my turn to take my last walk down that long hallway. While I was in the shelter the doctor diagnosed me with heart worm she said this is something that I need to have medical treatment for to cure right away.

I'm so relieved that a team of rescuers whom I have never met in MN are willing to save my life and find me a family to call my own. The staff at the shelter were very surprised that the lady whose life I saved never came back to return the favor or that my owners never came looking for me.

Do you have room at your house for me ? I would love to have a nice yard to play in and my very own kid to cuddle up with. If it's not too much to ask I may need a sweater to keep me warm since I'm a southern boy who has never experienced winter. If you don't have a spare sweater for me that's ok a nice big place in your heart would even feel better.

Hope to meet you soon!
Love,
Angel

URGENT: Angel needs a temporary foster home, while we work to find a forever home. We provide the food and cover all authorized medical expenses.

You simply provide a safe, loving home!

Why not take this opportunity to make a huge difference in the life of a sweet boy who needs some help?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, do think I should talk the girl friend into a pit bull/american bulldog mix?? I hope someone will make a good home for him if i don't end up picking him up!

I can't believe that this is the outcome of the story. How could anyone be so heartless as to ignore the animal that saved their life? Maybe there's more to her original story too. Did she know the individual who threatened her? Would keeping the dog have risked exposing this person because it may have reacted when he saw them again? Hmmm.

Thank God that he's now in a safe rescue awaiting a new home.

People. The never fail to amaze me.

Talk to the girlfriend and get on your knees if you have to. I literally cried as I read your entry about the outcome. However, I am not surprised. Over and over again, our animal friends show they have more humanity than mankind. I know this sounds silly, but I truly BELIEVE God gave us dogs to teach us, not only how to love, but how to receive it, also. I live in GA. We CANNOT let this ANGEL be behind bars not one more day. Who could not want a dog that has this much intelligience, initiative, and love in her heart? Her reward should not be prison or euthanasia. If you cannot convince girlfriend, I'll take her if someone will help me get her here. Can you tell I'm too upset? This story breaks my heart. Julee

Pit Bulls get such a bad rap. When trained/handled properly, they are well-adjusted animals. This is an encouraging story.

Finally, a positive pit bull story! This just goes to show that dogs really can read body language. "Angel" could tell that this woman was frightened and that the man attacking her was up to no good. Great story!

It's not the breed. Behavior is influenced by genetics, the environment in which the dog lives and experience. Instinct set in and I love the fact that no harm was done. Good boy!

I agree whole heartedly with the name the Lady "came up with" for the "stray Pit Bull" that saved her and child from the attacker. The article says,

"For Angela, it doesn't matter where the dog came from, just that he was there when she needed him most."

I have a sneaky suspicion that the courageous and heroic Pit Bull came from where OTHER Angels come from . . . from the throne of Jesus !!

It's great to hear such a positive story about Pit Bulls. Sadly enough, it's humans that make them such a threat to society. I've known several Pit Bulls that are just big babies because they are treated as such.

What a great testament to the loving and protective nature of dogs, especially such a deserving but misunderstood breed. If only this kind of story was given the attention that a pit bull attack gets in today's media.

Glad to hear a good story about a pitbull! I hope they find it's owner. It may have accidentally gotten loose. I bet it's owner had children or a child like the 2 year old in the story. If they don't find the owner at least we know he'll have a home. I wish they could find the person who threatened her. He needs to be in jail before he hurts someone. Should've tried to see if the dog could've followed a scent. Seems a shame he's in a shelter. Couldn't they foster him? He may feel he did something wrong.
