Stray Pit Bull Saves Woman, Child from Attacker

Browse News

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The wandering 65-pound Pit Bull mix might have seemed menacing to some passerby, but one woman will always remember him as her "guardian angel."

The dog, which authorities think is lost and not a stray, successfully thwarted a robbery attack on a mother and her 2-year-old son, who were held at knifepoint Monday afternoon.

The Florida woman, who has been identified by authorities simply as "Angela," was leaving a playground with her toddler son in Port Charlotte when a man approached her in the parking lot with a knife and told her not to make any noise or sudden movements.

Angela didn't have to do either to protect herself and her child -- a dog mysteriously ran to the scene and charged the man, who quickly fled.

"I don't think the dog physically attacked the man, but he went at him and was showing signs of aggression, just baring his teeth and growling and barking. It was clear he was trying to defend this woman," Animal Control Lt. Brian Jones told Pet Pulse.

"I don't know what this man's intentions were, but it is very possible this dog saved her life."

The exceptional part of the story, Jones said, is that the dog had never met or even seen the people it quickly jumped to defend.

"You hear about family dogs protecting their owners, but this dog had nothing to do with this woman or her kid," Jones said. "He was like her guardian angel."

After the alleged thief ran away, Angela quickly placed her son, Jordan, in the car and tried to drive off. Before she could, though, the dog jumped into her backseat, waiting with her for the police and animal control officers to arrive at the scene.

The dog was transported to a local shelter and if his owners don't step forward within five days, Jones said, Angela and her family plan to adopt the savior she named "Angel."

Animal control officers and shelter workers believe Angel is lost, and not a stray, because of his good health, sturdy weight and mild temperament.

"It's funny, that someone's irresponsibility could have saved someone's life," Jones said of Angel's possible owners.

For Angela, it doesn't matter where the dog came from, just that he was there when she needed him most.

"I don't know what his [the thief's] intentions were -- I don't know why he did it, but I'm glad that -- we call him Angel -- I'm glad that Angel showed up because I don't know what would have happened," Angela told NBC2 News.

For a small town with a population of 46,452, animal control officers were kept busy Monday afternoon. Jones says they department also responded to a report about a boa constrictor in a church parking lot.

The snake found its way into a car engine and was able to be removed without being harmed. It took three people to move the massive, seemingly random placed snake.

"It's funny, because we aren't a big place," he said of the Gulf Coast town. "And we can go for four or five months without the media contacting us about a story. It's been a busy week."

Officers from the responding county sheriff's office canvased the area and were unable to locate the suspect described as being in his 20s, tall and dark haired.

What a little hero. Pitbulls are wonderful dogs who love people. They have been abused, misused and mistreated. Who wouldn't be confused?

I too once believed everything I heard until I started working in animal welfare. Pitbulls are amazing companion animals. Love is all it takes.

This is nice to see the story the other way for these dogs. They have such a bad name but the ones I have known are just cuddle bugs!

A very intelligent dog. He knew who was the bad guy. If his original owners claim him, I hope they are more careful not to lose him again.

And they say Bullies are vicious and evil animals! Go "Angel" I hope this wakes people up to the fact there are no bad dogs if the owners are responsible.

I'm glad that the media is beginning to publish stories like this showing people that pit bulls aren't all bad. I have a pit mix and I get a lot of dirty looks when I'm walking her but she's the sweetest dog ever. Clearly this dog was too

I would like see an update to this story I hope the owners came for him or this women did adopt him, this is a good case of debunking the sterotype of Pits even though he seemed aggresive towards the attacker he was protecting someone else which puts this dog on that list of heroes

Pitbulls have such a bad rep and it is not fair. They are great family dogs and protectors if raised with kindness. This dog obviously is very intelligent, sensed the fear of the woman and rushed in to protect. What a hero!!

Not all pit bulls are mean. It depends on how they are raised and treated as puppies. This one must have gotten lost from a good family. I feel sorry for the family that lost him and I hope they find him. But if they don't it seems like he has picked himself a good new home. The story doesn't really shock me. Most dogs can tell when something isn't right or if someone is in danger. And some will run from that situation but some will try to help as this guy did. He's a very special dog!

We have loved this story and have placed a link to it from our webpage. If you manage a website you can help by linking to our page atwww.mrpitbull.com Nice to see so many of you care and yes nice to see some good press for a change. Our read on Pitbull temperament is a top 10 search in google and is often read by politicians or those considering a ban. We also showcase the dogs through out the site in a way that really shows just how amazing the pitbull breed really is. If you see ways in which we can improve our website to this end, please leave us a comment so we can follow through. Thanks again everyone for your loving concern for Angel and the Proud American Pitbull Terrier.

Hopefully, this will show those proposing breed-specific legislation that it is not the breed that is the problem. It's nice to see a positive story about a pit bull.

What a great dog. Pit bulls are not mean dogs then are very loving animals and i wish more people could see them for that. The make great house pets. I have a pit and it loves to play with my niece and nephew whom are 4 and 7. I read the rest of the story and I feel so bad that the women never came back for the dog and angel still needs a home. This is a great dog to have protecting your house!

I'm so glad that this woman planned on adopting her Angel if the owner couldn't be found. Any chance of a follow-up to find out if they did adopt Angel?

As for the snake, I would be terrified. Anything that took three people to move must have been huge.
