Stray Pit Bull Saves Woman, Child from Attacker

Browse News

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The wandering 65-pound Pit Bull mix might have seemed menacing to some passerby, but one woman will always remember him as her "guardian angel."

The dog, which authorities think is lost and not a stray, successfully thwarted a robbery attack on a mother and her 2-year-old son, who were held at knifepoint Monday afternoon.

The Florida woman, who has been identified by authorities simply as "Angela," was leaving a playground with her toddler son in Port Charlotte when a man approached her in the parking lot with a knife and told her not to make any noise or sudden movements.

Angela didn't have to do either to protect herself and her child -- a dog mysteriously ran to the scene and charged the man, who quickly fled.

"I don't think the dog physically attacked the man, but he went at him and was showing signs of aggression, just baring his teeth and growling and barking. It was clear he was trying to defend this woman," Animal Control Lt. Brian Jones told Pet Pulse.

"I don't know what this man's intentions were, but it is very possible this dog saved her life."

The exceptional part of the story, Jones said, is that the dog had never met or even seen the people it quickly jumped to defend.

"You hear about family dogs protecting their owners, but this dog had nothing to do with this woman or her kid," Jones said. "He was like her guardian angel."

After the alleged thief ran away, Angela quickly placed her son, Jordan, in the car and tried to drive off. Before she could, though, the dog jumped into her backseat, waiting with her for the police and animal control officers to arrive at the scene.

The dog was transported to a local shelter and if his owners don't step forward within five days, Jones said, Angela and her family plan to adopt the savior she named "Angel."

Animal control officers and shelter workers believe Angel is lost, and not a stray, because of his good health, sturdy weight and mild temperament.

"It's funny, that someone's irresponsibility could have saved someone's life," Jones said of Angel's possible owners.

For Angela, it doesn't matter where the dog came from, just that he was there when she needed him most.

"I don't know what his [the thief's] intentions were -- I don't know why he did it, but I'm glad that -- we call him Angel -- I'm glad that Angel showed up because I don't know what would have happened," Angela told NBC2 News.

For a small town with a population of 46,452, animal control officers were kept busy Monday afternoon. Jones says they department also responded to a report about a boa constrictor in a church parking lot.

The snake found its way into a car engine and was able to be removed without being harmed. It took three people to move the massive, seemingly random placed snake.

"It's funny, because we aren't a big place," he said of the Gulf Coast town. "And we can go for four or five months without the media contacting us about a story. It's been a busy week."

Officers from the responding county sheriff's office canvased the area and were unable to locate the suspect described as being in his 20s, tall and dark haired.

That dog is a hero. And not only to save them both but have the sense to get in the car too.

Now this is the type of Pit story they should put on the cover of papers. They always make them seem like such a horrible, dangerous breed.

What a wonderful story. More often than not - this is the typical Pit. I hope that the woman get to adopt the dog if is not claimed.

I was suprised to hear that a pit would do that...It might just be me but I have personally always found pitbulls to be rather vicious.

Some things were meant to happen, I think that Angela was giving off so many distress or fear vibes that the dog picked up on them. A wonderful good story about a pit bull that has had a bad rap for awhile. I am also glad that the dog jumped in her back seat becasue if it had just walked or ran away Angela would probably have spent a lot of time looking for him. In any case if his owner finds him or he gets to live with Angela he should be deemed a hero.

Agreed, pits (and many other animals) are amazingly in touch with human emotions. I'm glad to see that the woman wants to adopt the dog as well.

I enjoy so much reading this story and wish I would see more like it. Because I am most positive this type of stuff happens more than we come close to hearing about with pit bulls. I hope many in the media read it and many more. And I hope Angel finds a wonder home with his new family or is reunited with his original. I am very happy for "Angela" and her son that this wonderful dog was there to protect them. God works his miracles in many ways.

That's true, Tiffany. People are so quick to gripe and very slow to praise - if at all. I like to talk to managers and praise someone who did a good job. They get so much negative every day!

What a wonderful story! I have always felt that animal's, especialy dog's have an automatic response to protect people. Thank goodness this dog was at the right place, at the right time.

This is a wonderful story that may go towards turning around the stigmatisism surrounding pit bulls in this country. They are really wonderful dogs sometimes their owners just dont get them the right training or provide a positive enviroment for their animals.

This is an amazing story and a great example of how wonderful Pit Bulls really are. I'm so glad that this guardian angel has a home, whether it is with it's original owner (after the authorities check why the dog was wandering around)or "Angela." I hope the media spends as much time telling this story as it does when any dog does something wrong.

Does this sound like dog that would have a bad rap? Pitbulls are very missunderstood. My grandma always says something bad about them, and when I say something to defend them she just puts me off.

What a story! I think this should be blitzed to every major news station in the US . Maybe it'll sway some of these idiots who believe in condemning a certain breed based on nothing but their ignorance into learning a bit more about how gentle the pit breed really is. I hope this dog finds his way home to his owners or into the arms of the woman and child he saved.

All I can say is HELL YEAH! THIS is the true nature of pit bulls! THIS is what people should be reading about pit bulls! There are so many horrifying and sometimes over sensationalized stories about pit bulls! This probably won't be publized nearly enough because it would portray pit bulls in a positive light and the media certainly doesn't want that! That would mean people would need to change their opinions of an entire breed of dog!

I'm thrilled to read that Angela is willing to adopt "Angel!" Most people wouldn't even think twice about rescuing the dog that just rescued them. Wonderful, wonderful!!! The only downside is "Angel's" mom/dad. I do know that accidents do sometimes happen and if this boy is wondering not because of neglect, but because of a true accident...it's sad to think that his owners will be losing such a good boy! That's heart breaking. But at least no matter what, he'll have a home!

See pit bulls aren't just fight dogs. The "Angel" of a dog saved a woman and her young child from potential harm. I say good to you for adopting him if his family doesn't find him. We need more stories like this one spread around the nation to disprove myths that dogs like pits and rottweilers are just mean and aggressive

And here they say that Pit Bulls are too violent to have as pets. Some people I know have even said that their home owners insurance has gone up from owning a pit bull. This just proves that they are great animals.

Atruly wonderful story. I am so glad it was a pit. They are the most loyal loving dogs. I had one named angel and she was bacl and white. She was great. This story shows the good side of this breed. Just beautiful that this dog most likely saved this woman and her sons life..

Augh, what a good doggie! If the dog is lost, I hope that he finds his family. If he is a stray it's wonderful to know that he now has a family to love and be loved in return. I love these kind of stories!

Great story! The owner of this dog could possibly have a small child. Or he could have just simply just sensed that this was a bad situation. Good to see a Pit Bull get the positive publicity he deserves!

I have a pit bull breed and he is protective of his family, but is not other than that. His mother was a pure bred and was the sweetest dog I've ever known. Any dog can be aggressive if you train it to be or abuse it. Just as any breed can be loving if you teach it that it can be loved.....just as our children.

This is such a great story. Pit bulls have awful reputations, largely because the way they're raised by people associating them with fighting dogs perpetuates that perception. But when they're raised responsibly they can be very sweet, loyal, and protective animals.

I'm glad Angela and her familiy plan on adopting him!

I always like to read about this seemingly "aggressive" breed, doing good for others. My sister has an all white pit bull that is the same way. He is the most lovable and loyal pet. I know that if someone was in need he would react in the same manner.
