Stolen Mastiff Returned Home, Investigation Continues

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. − A warning is being issued by the owners of a show dog that was stolen after being left alone for just an instant. The owner said their dog is so big, and was stolen so fast, that if it can happen to them, it can happen to anyone.

Pounder is a 175-pound English Mastiff. Stealing a dog as mammoth as her is a tall order, but on Saturday, March 1, the 14-month-old dog was indeed swiped. The loving show dog was en route to a competition in Secaucus, N.J., when she was left in her owner’s sport utility vehicle for a few moments. While the owner stopped inside a hotel to use the restroom, her vehicle was broken into and Pounder was dognapped.

Then someone broke in and poached the prized pooch.

"I was devastated," said owner Sharon Costello. "Your first emotion is 'Oh my God'. The dog struggled; you could see that the dog struggled. They tore her out of the crate − they drug her out."

Pulling a large dog out of the back of Costello's vehicle apparently went unnoticed. Authorities were contacted soon after, but the loss had already begun to take its toll on the couple.

"My emotions were − I broke down in front of the whole place and I started crying − that was it," said Charlie Costello.

Pounder’s owners, Charlie and Sharon Costello, offered a reward for their pet’s return, no questions asked. Meanwhile, concerns of what was happening to Pounder plagued the couple's thoughts.

"Are they going to take her to a pit bull ring are they going to sell her to a medical lab for some kind of experimentation," said Sharon Costello.

Three days later, an anonymous couple called saying they saw Pounder loose on a highway in the city of Newark, and took her home to Pennsylvania. They said they learned of Pounder’s abduction from the media, and turned her over to the Costello’s on Tuesday, safe and sound.

"As soon as she got out of the crate, she started kissing me and licking me like she always does," said Charlie Costello.

But despite her ordeal, Pounder remains as sweet as she is huge.

"You never give up hoping and you never stop,” said Sharon Costello. “You never ever stop having faith that what you ask for will come to pass.

“I would suggest that (you) don't ever leave any of your dogs in your cars, because obviously you get targeted, and show dogs get targeted, and obviously this one did and she got stolen,” she said.

Police are still investigating the matter, and as of yet, no reward money has been handed out. Questions remain about the couple who allegedly found the dog. The police could be questioning them in coming weeks.

Oh my god - I would be devestated if this happened to me. It's amazing that huge dog didn't bite on of the dognappers. I wish he would have!

This brings to mind the fact that so many dogs are tethered outside, live outside, spend time in a fenced yard, alone behind an electronic fence and more. The care snatching cases are rare, thankfully! But, those that leave their dogs alone outside should think twice as well. They are not locked up.

Also, so many dog show people have signs on their care - drive slowly - show dogs. This is an advertisement for people, first of all, and secondly, they think if it is a show dog it must be worth money. My recommendation - keep it a secret!

Okay, don't yell at me, but I fault the owners. I am not condoning the one who stole the dog, BUT..... I read this article as both husband and wife traveling with the dog. Okay, so one has to use the bathroom. Why did both go in when they were carrying valuable cargo inside their vehicle? If both had to go, why not one at a time? What ever happened to responsibility for your own actions. Crooks will steal if the situation arises, sad but true. So we, as law abiding citizens must protect ourselves.

This story really touched me owning a powerful Mastiff myself. These are not easy dogs to steal!!! They weigh more than the robber!?!?!

I wonder if they steal them for mating purposes as well. Breeding them with a pit bull makes for a very large, powerful fighter.

This is scary; always know where your children and pets are. When my dog is in my fenced in yard, I'm always checking on her. I usually keep one gate padlocked, actually because I think the neighbor's kids were running in my yard to retrieve balls and forgetting to latch the gate. But I think it deters someone with bad intentions. They would have to climb over fence and lift my dog over the fence, she wouldn't go quietly.

I remember when this happened--and then some other dogs went missing in a similar case. Oddly enough they all ended up in the same area. You just can't be too careful--but there was just something "odd" about these cases that I couldn't quite figure out, but something didn't seem "right." But at least Pounder was safely returned home. And the stuff you learn on zootoo--had no idea Courtney was at the same show!! :)

Good ending to a near disaster. There are bad people all over and you just have to really be careful. We all have lapses in judgement and I feel sorry for the owner. She must feel so guilty. Just glad it all turned out well.

The kind of person (or people) that would steal a dog is beyond my comprehension. Reprehensible is the perfect word to describe that kind of person/people.

I believe that the dog was found, period. Why would you steal a dog and then just turn him back over to his owner. There was no ill intent from the people who found him, just from the perps who stole him to begin with.

Sounds to me like they were being specifically targeted. Who, in the span of a few minutes, thinks that it's a fantastic idea to break into someone's car and steal a random and enormous dog? They had to either have known that the dog was a show dog or decide on the spur of the moment that they HAD to have a Mastiff RIGHT NOW.

This is horrible that this person got away. Its just as bad as kidnapping. Actually its worse. The animals can't call out for help or defend themselves if the person who kidnaps them is dangerous there is no telling how badly the animal may be hurt. its nice to know at least one animal is safe

I don't think these burglars realize--or care--that animals have emotions and are frightened by such things. Stealing animals should have the same penalties as kidnapping.
