S.C. Suspends State Official Charged with Animal Neglect

RICHLAND COUNTY, SC – Cases of animal neglect happen all too often, but this time it involves a mother and her two sons, one of which is a high ranking official in South Carolina.

The case has been unfolding all week, starting first on Monday when Hazel Trexler had 23 malnourished horses confiscated from her property.

“If we had let them sit any longer we could have had some really sick horses that we may not have been able to save,” said Kelly Graham of the Humane Society.

That raid then led lead to another tip that investigators followed to her son’s home on Wednesday.

More than five neglected horses were found at the farm of the South Carolina’s Assistant Commissioner of Agriculture, James Trexler.

Upon the discovery, state officials suspended Trexler from his duties at the Department of Agriculture pending further investigation.

The horses were found in the barn up to their ankles in manure and also in poor health.

“One a scale of one to 10, a five is usually a healthy horse, 10 is overweight or obese, and we got a one yesterday,” Graham said. “But the rest ranged from a three to four, these horses are probably going to end up, once they are vetted, a one or two.”

While his mother told the media that the horses on Trexler’s property belonged to her, Trexler, his mother and brother Terry Trexler, all were arrested Wednesday evening.

The three then appeared in court Thursday morning for a bond hearing:

Hazel Trexler was charged with 28 counts of ill treatment of animals.

Terry Trexler was charged with 23 counts of ill treatment of animals and 1 count of kidnapping for refusing to allow a Humane Society investigator to leave his property on Feb. 13.

James Trexler, the state official, was charged with five counts of ill treatment of animals.

While James was unable to be reached for comment, his mother looks forward to setting the record straight.

“My horses are fine and I will have my day in court. I will have my day in court,” Hazel Trexler said.

As for the horses, they are receiving care from vets right now. From initial assessments, it looks like all the horses will be able to make a recovery.

But Richland County Sherriff said the horses suffered from halters growing into their faces and other inflictions that could have caused lameness.

The Trexlers are a charming family--NOT!

This story goes to show also how important it is for parents to model responsible, ethical morals for their children by behavior and action.

Politics doesn't matter in this case, thank God. I like one other reader's response to let these people go without food or water and see how they like it. No animal should be treated this way. The people should be prosecuted to the fullest. No excuse.

Horses are beautiful creatures, and when neglected, they are so frail and lose all of their majestic nature. These people should be given no food or water for a couple weeks and see how they feel.

I hope that the kidnapping charge sticks and comes with a gret big sentence. Unfortunately, the abuse charges will probably bring light sentences or none.

"I'll have my day in court"!?!? Is this woman delusional? Does she feel that her treatment of those animals is defensible? There's a special place in hell for people like these.

how could people neglect their animals its like neglecting one of their own family members and leaving them to starve and die we people should make signs and should put them on their homes sayin they should not have animas

I think he should be stripped of his position and punished for not giving them poor horses the care they needed!

James Trexlor needs to be punished to the fullest extent of the law-or perhaps just hung from a big old palmetto tree in his own state!!!!!!

i hope they get all that they deserve. arrested is a good start

So what is this person was a state official and a high ranking office...who gives a crap. Cruelty is cruelty. So someone who has the means to provide for these animals has no excuse for what they did except for laziness. I think the family should not be allowed to own animals at all. Not the rule 3 strikes your out. One shot deal here.

Absolutely disgusting.

These people need the fullest extent of the law to come down on them.

And to think one of the offenders was a public official? Even worse.

Hope all of the horses recover and find new loving homes.

We often hear of the cruelty and neglect that man unleashes upon our so-called best friend, the dog. How sad that an animal which has been a significant part of our very survival, going back to when man and dog first partnered for food and security, has become for many an object, a possession, or a nuisance.

Man himself, would perhaps have not survived the many travails he faced, nor the threats to his existence, were it not for his evolving relationship with the wolf, who would ultimately become the dog. The bond between the two was one of both convenience and necessity, providing both with the rewards of social networking or "packing". Man was fairly adept at hunting prey and leaving significant remnants or leftovers, which were easy pickings for the wolf. The wolf’s keen sense of sight, smell, and sound provided vital protection and security alerting man to marauders or dangerous predators. It was by all accounts, a relationship based upon mutual respect and admiration for the skills each possessed.

As man evolved, so too did his needs, and the wolf or dog, became more and more specialized at providing necessary skill sets such as hunting, herding, retrieving, security, etc. Equal to the evolution of man's survival and subsistence needs were his social needs; some of those needs were positive, and some were not so, at least for some. The pleasure of dog companionship apart from merely a working relationship began to develop as a significant aspect for many due to the simple, unconditional, and selfless loyalty the canine is famous for.

As pack animals, canines understood well (due to their descendency from the wolf), the importance of social networking and bonding based upon a hierarchy grounded in trust, stability, mutual respect, and undying loyalty to the pack, or family. They also understood the importance of reinforcing those bonds continually through demonstrations of loyalty, affection, and respect. Thus we began to bond ever more with the canine.

There are however, those among us who have simply never understood the significant role the canine has played in our survival and evolution, or the importance of their social networking which serves as a testament to their enduring legacy as pack animals. It is beyond remarkable to watch a pack of canines interact with one another, creating a network with a hierarchy based up balance, survival, stability, and above all else, longevity of the pack. There are no lies, no deception, no misinformation, and no selfishness practiced nor allowed within the pack, as its very existence is dependent upon stability and balance.

All decisions made by the pack leaders (Alpha male and Alpha female) must be made with the best interests of all pack members in mind or the pack will quickly turn on its leaders and replace them. The pack cannot survive with unstable or selfish pack leaders and that system has allowed canine packs to evolve and survive some of the harshest conditions on earth. It has also allowed them to adapt their skill sets to various needs and demands and equally has allowed them to work closely and affectionately with man as a pack member.

What an incredible gift and responsibility they have entrusted us with, their very souls and lives; and all too often, we betray that trust. How very disheartening a thought that is. I am a firm believer that a human being who does not respect an animal, particularly one who has been so instrumental to our survival, is truly a human being who does not, despite any appearance to the contrary, respect human beings as a whole either.

People really have to come up to the plate and turn these type of people in to the authorities. Even then, it takes two or three or four visits to get animals taken care of.
