Special Horses for Those with Special Needs

Browse News

WARWICK, N.Y. – A recent study by the CDC found that one in 150 eight year-olds have autism. The disorder, characterized by social interaction and communication problems, is incurable. But experts say there’s hope for autistic people, thanks to animal-friendly therapy.

At the Winslow Therapeutic Center in Warwick, NY, horse healing is the mantra. Patients include kids like Samantha Munin, who shows up to ride with her sister Rebecca every week. Samantha is autistic, but her sister is not. Still, the girls’ father Frank brings them both to Winslow – it’s a way the sisters can bond while Samantha receives therapy while Dad watches contently from the sidelines.

“Horses stimulate human body and motion at the normal walk,” said Cathe Struble, volunteer coordinator and certified therapeutic riding instructor. “So what horses can do for children who can’t walk or need assistance walking, is they get that natural stimulation of the muscles moving.”

Struble says riding helps kids contract and release muscles in ways they normally wouldn’t if they use wheel chairs or just have trouble on two feet. The muscle stimulation that occurs during riding allows them to walk more easily and develop trunk control – a vital aspect of good balance.

Laura Toro said her son Keelan has shown improvements since he started riding.

“Well, at school they’re saying that … he’s happier. He’s more alert and focusing. It’s really social and it’s something that’s great for him to talk about,” she said.

Not just any horse can provide the kind of care these kids need. Volunteer Lara Menegazzo said each is specially chosen.

“All of our horses go through training,” she explained. “So you know that they are all bombproof. They’re not really scared of anything and they’re not very skittish.”

“The horses make the kids happy – it’s the bond that an animal gives to a child or an adult,” said Struble. “You can’t touch that – it’s absolutely priceless. They’re so wonderful to be able to bond like that … it takes a special kind of animal.”

Winslow isn’t the only organization providing horse-driven therapy. For a list of care providers nationwide, head to narha.org. To learn more about the Winslow Theraputic Center, visit their Web site winslow.org.

It just goes to show how much animals give back to society without even knowing it. This is such a heartwarming story. I am glad Samantha and Keelan are able to enjoy these horses.

This is such a wonderful concept ! I' m almost certain it gives the child or person the feeling of being without cares for awhile .Animals are so loving and giving that it usually makes people feel at ease in their surroundings. There should be more places that offer horse therapy.

Actually I work at a facility that houses children and teens with handicaps (sometimes really severe paralysis). We do have horses in stables on the grounds that some of the children are able to partake in therapy with the horses a couple of times a week. I think it's such a great thing. I'm glad to know that this type of therapy is not only happening elsewhere, but also aiding in other physical/emotional conditions.

Another wonderful example of a healing, human/animal bond. How wonderful for the children with autism ~ and for their parents, who must feel relief and hope.

it is pretty cool how people can show improvements in their life by being with animals. kids usually love animals by nature anyways, then add the awesome things like interacting with them. God gave us animals to take care of , but look how they can take of us.

We also have a Theraputic Horsemanship program near St Louis, MO. The riders connect with the horses more easily than with humans because the riders do not feel threatened. There are other pet therapy programs that use dogs- all show the healing power of animals.

This is a topic which really hits home for me. I have a cousin who is special needs and my older mare, Velvet it perfect for her. My older mare takes care of my cousin. Not only that, but my mare had a stroke about two years ago and is mildly arthritic. It is amazing that anyone can ride her. But my cousin can, and so we encourage her to ride to help with fine motor skills and balance. This also helps with posture since she has a tendancey to round her shoulders and look down when she walks.

Not only is my cousin one person I know, but I had another friend who did the special needs riding program and it help emencly with her. Form not even being able to sit on a horse without help, after a few years she was able to take some low fences.

Horses are amazing creatures and it always amazes me how much they help, special needs kids, adults and people who don't have any disorders.

If horses are such wonderful, gentle, therapeutic animals, why are so many going to slaughter all of the time??? Oh yeah, because humans are sick!!

Growing up in the country around horses I've always thought there was something special about them. Something calming just touching them and sharing their space.

My sister volunteers for a therapy stable nearby by and she is amazed at the transformation in children with different problems. Scared and sometimes crying when they start to smiling and playing games on the horse after awhile.

I listen quietly as she speaks but I am not surprised.

Horses are special but they are not the only animals that can be wonderful therapists.
