Special Horses for Those with Special Needs

Browse News

WARWICK, N.Y. – A recent study by the CDC found that one in 150 eight year-olds have autism. The disorder, characterized by social interaction and communication problems, is incurable. But experts say there’s hope for autistic people, thanks to animal-friendly therapy.

At the Winslow Therapeutic Center in Warwick, NY, horse healing is the mantra. Patients include kids like Samantha Munin, who shows up to ride with her sister Rebecca every week. Samantha is autistic, but her sister is not. Still, the girls’ father Frank brings them both to Winslow – it’s a way the sisters can bond while Samantha receives therapy while Dad watches contently from the sidelines.

“Horses stimulate human body and motion at the normal walk,” said Cathe Struble, volunteer coordinator and certified therapeutic riding instructor. “So what horses can do for children who can’t walk or need assistance walking, is they get that natural stimulation of the muscles moving.”

Struble says riding helps kids contract and release muscles in ways they normally wouldn’t if they use wheel chairs or just have trouble on two feet. The muscle stimulation that occurs during riding allows them to walk more easily and develop trunk control – a vital aspect of good balance.

Laura Toro said her son Keelan has shown improvements since he started riding.

“Well, at school they’re saying that … he’s happier. He’s more alert and focusing. It’s really social and it’s something that’s great for him to talk about,” she said.

Not just any horse can provide the kind of care these kids need. Volunteer Lara Menegazzo said each is specially chosen.

“All of our horses go through training,” she explained. “So you know that they are all bombproof. They’re not really scared of anything and they’re not very skittish.”

“The horses make the kids happy – it’s the bond that an animal gives to a child or an adult,” said Struble. “You can’t touch that – it’s absolutely priceless. They’re so wonderful to be able to bond like that … it takes a special kind of animal.”

Winslow isn’t the only organization providing horse-driven therapy. For a list of care providers nationwide, head to narha.org. To learn more about the Winslow Theraputic Center, visit their Web site winslow.org.

Once again animals have shown how important they should be in our lives and world. If more amimals could be used this way, less would have to be put down.

This truly does work for handicapped children, I've seen this happen with my neighbors child.
She's paralyzed on the left side, from a head injury, when she started riding horses, her confidence grew and she's much more outgoing than she was before. Great Program.

This is right in my area. They are a great group.I have friends that have kids that use the services there and they are all in agreement what a big difference the horses make in the childrens lives. I have called to volunteer there many times but they are only in need during the week since so many before me have taken the weekend shifts! That says alot about the environment - people are fighting to volunteer there !

One of the most rewarding things I did with my horse was therapeutic horsemanship.
I felt like the kids really responded and enjoyed themselves.
The horse was a very special animal and proved it again and again.
I recommend this activity for every horse lover looking for a volunteer activity.

I was so moved by this story & I personally know that this is very true. My great-nephew was here for a visit last year with his younger sister. We took them to see our horse and up until then neither of them was very communicative especially the boy who has autism. He was afraid of the horse at first and did not want to touch her as he and his father were afraid of him getting dirty. The horse was so gentle and they eventually touched her and did not want to leave her. They did not ride her (that will be for another day) & the entire family, including their Dad, had a life changing day. They still talk about the horse. We have all bonded closer from this experience.

My son, who is Autistic, was involved in hippotherapy a year ago. It was great for him. He had such a great time riding. There were other children involved with other disabilites and they all seemed to benefit from it. My son still talks about Copper, the horse he rode.

We are considering this for my daughter. It was suggested by her current physical therapist. I think its great for children to do something theraputic that doesn't feel like therapy. These children are too often stuck in a therapy session and it feels like "work". This is a wonderful alternative.
