Special Horses for Those with Special Needs

Browse News

WARWICK, N.Y. – A recent study by the CDC found that one in 150 eight year-olds have autism. The disorder, characterized by social interaction and communication problems, is incurable. But experts say there’s hope for autistic people, thanks to animal-friendly therapy.

At the Winslow Therapeutic Center in Warwick, NY, horse healing is the mantra. Patients include kids like Samantha Munin, who shows up to ride with her sister Rebecca every week. Samantha is autistic, but her sister is not. Still, the girls’ father Frank brings them both to Winslow – it’s a way the sisters can bond while Samantha receives therapy while Dad watches contently from the sidelines.

“Horses stimulate human body and motion at the normal walk,” said Cathe Struble, volunteer coordinator and certified therapeutic riding instructor. “So what horses can do for children who can’t walk or need assistance walking, is they get that natural stimulation of the muscles moving.”

Struble says riding helps kids contract and release muscles in ways they normally wouldn’t if they use wheel chairs or just have trouble on two feet. The muscle stimulation that occurs during riding allows them to walk more easily and develop trunk control – a vital aspect of good balance.

Laura Toro said her son Keelan has shown improvements since he started riding.

“Well, at school they’re saying that … he’s happier. He’s more alert and focusing. It’s really social and it’s something that’s great for him to talk about,” she said.

Not just any horse can provide the kind of care these kids need. Volunteer Lara Menegazzo said each is specially chosen.

“All of our horses go through training,” she explained. “So you know that they are all bombproof. They’re not really scared of anything and they’re not very skittish.”

“The horses make the kids happy – it’s the bond that an animal gives to a child or an adult,” said Struble. “You can’t touch that – it’s absolutely priceless. They’re so wonderful to be able to bond like that … it takes a special kind of animal.”

Winslow isn’t the only organization providing horse-driven therapy. For a list of care providers nationwide, head to narha.org. To learn more about the Winslow Theraputic Center, visit their Web site winslow.org.

wow such odds of having an autistic child. I wonder why? Years ago, you hardly ever heard of a child being autistic.
Ithink its a great program and very good for the children. It must feel good to them being moved abvout so much while riding a horse.

Ever notice that there are a heck of a lot more kids diagnosed with ADHD and with autism now than there use to. My theory (shared by some special ed teachers I know) is that there was a dramatic increase shortly after aspertame came on the scene. I know there are other "new" chemicals, but that one seems to permeate society. And I know several adults who have developed severe symptoms from that as well - including me. Perhaps we were too hasty in allowing that chemical in our food supply.

what a great story! this whole concept has gotten a lot of press lately, and with good reason it works. pet therapy has become big in nursing homes and in children's hospitals. we have a nursing home in our area that uses the "eden concept" and a lady we know has her little dog there with her. they also have domesticated animals in pens in the back yard. last time i was there, they had a llama!

Unfortunately, for me, I have not seen this program in action, but I have seen videos of the help and hope trained animals give to sprecial needs people and confined senior citizens. I hope these volunteers who unconditionally give their lives to helping others benifit from these types of programs are rewarded eternally. I know they are rewarded in their current life.

It's great to hear stories like these. Animals can be so healing and great for kids like these. This time gives children the chance to not only bond with animals, but also with siblings or friends. Great idea and inspiring story.

I love stories like this. As a horse owner I know the benefits of horses. I have seen children with handicaps show horses in the county fair and win or lose they are happy, confident children. Horses sense the need to be gentle and patient with these people. There is a true bond between a person that places trust in a horse and the horse. If only insurance costs were not so high to run a facility like Winslow I think there would be many more facilities like it around. The liability is the problem.
