Special Horses for Those with Special Needs

Browse News

WARWICK, N.Y. – A recent study by the CDC found that one in 150 eight year-olds have autism. The disorder, characterized by social interaction and communication problems, is incurable. But experts say there’s hope for autistic people, thanks to animal-friendly therapy.

At the Winslow Therapeutic Center in Warwick, NY, horse healing is the mantra. Patients include kids like Samantha Munin, who shows up to ride with her sister Rebecca every week. Samantha is autistic, but her sister is not. Still, the girls’ father Frank brings them both to Winslow – it’s a way the sisters can bond while Samantha receives therapy while Dad watches contently from the sidelines.

“Horses stimulate human body and motion at the normal walk,” said Cathe Struble, volunteer coordinator and certified therapeutic riding instructor. “So what horses can do for children who can’t walk or need assistance walking, is they get that natural stimulation of the muscles moving.”

Struble says riding helps kids contract and release muscles in ways they normally wouldn’t if they use wheel chairs or just have trouble on two feet. The muscle stimulation that occurs during riding allows them to walk more easily and develop trunk control – a vital aspect of good balance.

Laura Toro said her son Keelan has shown improvements since he started riding.

“Well, at school they’re saying that … he’s happier. He’s more alert and focusing. It’s really social and it’s something that’s great for him to talk about,” she said.

Not just any horse can provide the kind of care these kids need. Volunteer Lara Menegazzo said each is specially chosen.

“All of our horses go through training,” she explained. “So you know that they are all bombproof. They’re not really scared of anything and they’re not very skittish.”

“The horses make the kids happy – it’s the bond that an animal gives to a child or an adult,” said Struble. “You can’t touch that – it’s absolutely priceless. They’re so wonderful to be able to bond like that … it takes a special kind of animal.”

Winslow isn’t the only organization providing horse-driven therapy. For a list of care providers nationwide, head to narha.org. To learn more about the Winslow Theraputic Center, visit their Web site winslow.org.

These are incredible programs. Seven years ago I began volunteering at a NARHA center to help care for the horses. Then I started leading the horses in lessons and I was hooked. Not only are the horse special, but each person who comes to ride. Now I am a full time instructor and have the best job in the world. It is so wonderful to see the difference riding a horse can make in the life of someone with a disability. I recommend to anyone who has a program like this in their area to at least go out and visit, if not become a volunteer. It is truly amazing.

Wonderful story! These horses are amazing and if only a few children are helped, it will be worth it. I have heard of more and more places that offer riding therapy, so it must be catching on-and that's a good thing!

Therapeutic riding definitely does wonders for people with all sorts of conditions. The barn where I used to ride did therapy with blind and autistic kids and adults and they absolutely loved it. Their families and aids always commented on how happy it made them and how it helped them improve their balance, etc. It's a great program!

I have a friend with a child who was born with a severe case of spina bifada and he goes through all kinds of therapy. Even the speech therapist could not get this child to talk. They brought him to visit our horse Max, a 16.1H thorough bred and he started talking! His therapist couldn't believe it! Max was slaughter bound at one time. Thankfully he was saved for us! Say no to horse slaughter!

Animals are definitely an answer to a lot of our emotional needs. They sometimes are the only ones who will listen when we have a problem! Just listen, not give advice, not offer solutions...........

As others have commented, some horses just seem to somehow "know" what the doctor ordered, with autistic and other special needs children and adults. The miracle is there, just waiting to happen. Finding those horses and matching them with the children and adults that need them means such horses are worth their weight in gold! I am very proud of Zootoo for posting this news article, which is sure to be a lifesaver for several horses, children and adults. God bless you!

I find horse therapy fascinating. My horse knows when a child is on his back versus an adult and acts accordingly. My friend's grandson is autistic and he lights up whenever he is on the back of her horse; he really is a different child. I just wish people could really see how magical and therapeutic horses can be.

Why don't they take some of the mustangs and train them for people with special needs - this will kill two birds with one stone - helping someone feel like they can do anything and two rescuing an animal that is a part of American history. Win win situation!

We read so many stories about unwanted or homeless horses. We could try to train some of them to work with children, or the handicapped. Horses are intelligent and refined beings and if given a purpose and a job they would play it wonderfully.

I'm curious as to the reason for the skyrocketing cases of autism...or is it just t hat we arre better able to diagnose now?

There is a lot of research that is showing that childhood shots as well as strep throat may be causing autism. I'm thinking of all the chemicals we come into contact with on a daily basis as well. :::sigh:::

They haven't been able to completely connect the shots to Autism for sure but its something to consider. If you look up the amount of shots a baby gets back in the 80s versus what they get now, the list has more then doubled. Makes you think that maybe it has something to do with it. Although, I have seen cases where brother and sister both have Autism, but one had the shots, the other did not. That to me means there is most likely a genetic component as well.

I believe it is still a medical mystery. I think that there is no way that we can live a life with so much toxins in the water and the air, and so many chemicals used without paying a toll on our health. As humans get more inventive in terms of producing toxic waste and our food supply is compromised, it is difficult for the most conscientious person to eat safely.

I worry that the damages done to the human fetus makes for too many problems. The short answer is that human greed won't stop until we've all killed each other.

It's wonderful that this is such a natural way of helping children with autism...that the act of riding helps with some of their physical problems. And absolutely bonding with an animal has to be beneficial in many ways. I hope this alerts organizations that help autistic children and the idea of using horses and other animals catches on with them.

I suffer from migraines and when I down with one I will have both of my cats right by me. One curled up by my head and the other curled up by my heart. I know it is not the same as this story but I think it is an animal tying to make a human better.

Jamie, you're right those kitties want to comfort. By the way, in addition to what every meds you might use, try wrapping an old thin bath towel tightly around your
head. The pressure from the outside (the towel), seems to help lessen the pressure on the inside (the migraine). Been there done that, and it's awful.

Animals work wonders with special needs individuals! Maybe because they are non-judgmental to begin with. A young relative of mine who has been hospitalized numerous times due to special needs always has a smile on when one of the therapy dogs gentle gets on his bed and nuzzles him; even on a bad day.
