Special Horses for Those with Special Needs

Browse News

WARWICK, N.Y. – A recent study by the CDC found that one in 150 eight year-olds have autism. The disorder, characterized by social interaction and communication problems, is incurable. But experts say there’s hope for autistic people, thanks to animal-friendly therapy.

At the Winslow Therapeutic Center in Warwick, NY, horse healing is the mantra. Patients include kids like Samantha Munin, who shows up to ride with her sister Rebecca every week. Samantha is autistic, but her sister is not. Still, the girls’ father Frank brings them both to Winslow – it’s a way the sisters can bond while Samantha receives therapy while Dad watches contently from the sidelines.

“Horses stimulate human body and motion at the normal walk,” said Cathe Struble, volunteer coordinator and certified therapeutic riding instructor. “So what horses can do for children who can’t walk or need assistance walking, is they get that natural stimulation of the muscles moving.”

Struble says riding helps kids contract and release muscles in ways they normally wouldn’t if they use wheel chairs or just have trouble on two feet. The muscle stimulation that occurs during riding allows them to walk more easily and develop trunk control – a vital aspect of good balance.

Laura Toro said her son Keelan has shown improvements since he started riding.

“Well, at school they’re saying that … he’s happier. He’s more alert and focusing. It’s really social and it’s something that’s great for him to talk about,” she said.

Not just any horse can provide the kind of care these kids need. Volunteer Lara Menegazzo said each is specially chosen.

“All of our horses go through training,” she explained. “So you know that they are all bombproof. They’re not really scared of anything and they’re not very skittish.”

“The horses make the kids happy – it’s the bond that an animal gives to a child or an adult,” said Struble. “You can’t touch that – it’s absolutely priceless. They’re so wonderful to be able to bond like that … it takes a special kind of animal.”

Winslow isn’t the only organization providing horse-driven therapy. For a list of care providers nationwide, head to narha.org. To learn more about the Winslow Theraputic Center, visit their Web site winslow.org.

We read so many stories about unwanted or homeless horses. We could try to train some of them to work with children, or the handicapped. Horses are intelligent and refined beings and if given a purpose and a job they would play it wonderfully.

I'm curious as to the reason for the skyrocketing cases of autism...or is it just t hat we arre better able to diagnose now?

I believe it is still a medical mystery. I think that there is no way that we can live a life with so much toxins in the water and the air, and so many chemicals used without paying a toll on our health. As humans get more inventive in terms of producing toxic waste and our food supply is compromised, it is difficult for the most conscientious person to eat safely.

I worry that the damages done to the human fetus makes for too many problems. The short answer is that human greed won't stop until we've all killed each other.

There is a lot of research that is showing that childhood shots as well as strep throat may be causing autism. I'm thinking of all the chemicals we come into contact with on a daily basis as well. :::sigh:::

It's wonderful that this is such a natural way of helping children with autism...that the act of riding helps with some of their physical problems. And absolutely bonding with an animal has to be beneficial in many ways. I hope this alerts organizations that help autistic children and the idea of using horses and other animals catches on with them.

I suffer from migraines and when I down with one I will have both of my cats right by me. One curled up by my head and the other curled up by my heart. I know it is not the same as this story but I think it is an animal tying to make a human better.

My wife always finds the greatest comfort in the pets. They seem to know when she is sick, upset, depressed and they become instant healers. They are very intuitive.

Jamie, you're right those kitties want to comfort. By the way, in addition to what every meds you might use, try wrapping an old thin bath towel tightly around your
head. The pressure from the outside (the towel), seems to help lessen the pressure on the inside (the migraine). Been there done that, and it's awful.

Animals work wonders with special needs individuals! Maybe because they are non-judgmental to begin with. A young relative of mine who has been hospitalized numerous times due to special needs always has a smile on when one of the therapy dogs gentle gets on his bed and nuzzles him; even on a bad day.

Therapy animals apparently come in all sizes and shapes ~ and though we frequently think of therapy animals as dogs, horses apparently are helpful too. Children with autism need a connection and a bond ~ the horse program is wonderful.

We have a program like this where we live and it makes a big difference for Austistic people and those with other diabilities as well. I think other places could benefit and think it would be a great idea to use some of the horses that need to be adopted!

This is a beautiful story and a great win/win situation. Horses and other animals can be the best therapists for those people suffering from a multitude of problems. They must also love to have such a fine vocation.

Great story. Autistic kids have so much going on in their minds, just can't get it out. These animals may make them feel less frustrated and that is a wonderful gift.
